This was totally foreseeable, unfortunately. Anyone who would discard democracy in the past can NOT be trusted within its structures to take power. This is a lesson for all of our democracy's about its fragility and our responsibility to pick effective, respectable, decent human beings.

The tragedy of many Latin American countries: an ultra right wing dictator is killed or has to flee abroad and gets replaced by an ultra left wing dictator, or vice versa. As if moderate politicians doesn't conform with their machissismo-"philosophy". Somoza and his clique were as brutal as Batista or Trujillo, on the other side of the political spectrum, Ortega sees himself as the Castro of Nicaragua. Too bad for all that turmoil in that region, because it has such a beautiful nature.

Well, if you're happy to live in such a worker's paradise, fine with me. I prefer staying under the terrible oppressive multinationals and greedy Eurocrats. If I ever should decide to vote ultra left or ultra right, I can do so without anyone throwing me into some kind of Lubianka. I hope you guys realize that Ortega was the reason why there was some faith in Nicaragua after Aleman and Bolaños
Aleman mainly left the country to rot, but once he got presidency again (Ortega) was able to bring back life in the country( with help of others of course)
The country was going well up until 2018 which was both the people and Ortega’s fault.
No one is the victim here, I can say that Nicaraguans in this case were the ones who destroyed their country ( aesthetically and economically)
It was bad, I don’t know what they were thinking bc let me tell you that there wasn’t a bit of dictatorship at all
You will probably will mention the university kids getting killed which was Rosario who made that order but I will still say Ortega has part blame bc he is the president. But after that, everything or mostly everything that happened afterwards was totally on the Nicaraguans themselves
Bringing things down, burning them. Not a good move in my book, eventually they sent out antimotines to stop it from progressing very badly
Unless you lived here, and even then you will still find millions of lies, and millions of fake news, don’t believe anything but I mean anything form any news article that went around or this will go around
Ortega made mistakes, but I don’t know why or even have an idea of the comparison with Somosa. It’s ridiculous, far fetched and not even close

      Hi Bladimir,

I had a reply stating that he has cleaned up all the gangs, opened hospitals and is helping the poor, the writer had a bit of a go at me. I replied politely, because I m not certain of what the facts really are.
Please take a look. (I wrote the comment 6 days ago, today being Wednesday 20 July)
Could you please clarify what is the truth?
I know the media can dramatise and colour a story to fit their own narrative.
It seems to me that he is running the country like a dictatorship and the majority of the nation are terrified of his administration.
I am Australian, down here we do not hear a lot about what is happening in your nation.
I only wish you and your people safety, happiness and success. I am a little confused on what is truthfully happening.

      @@pepitoculazo665 Hi Pepito,
It must be so unsettling to live in Nicaragua under that type of leadership. It seems bizarre to me he was ever voted in the initial legal elections.
While he lives in his life of luxury, paranoia and delusion - the good people of your nation suffer, can not know whom to trust and have diminishing hope for what the future will bring.
I sincerely feel for you guys, that is not a fair way to live. Your country has been through enough.
It will cease to amaze and sadden me how much deceit and hate there is in this world.
No leader can ever please everyone, but to be a dictator like he is, why would you want to be so despised, then to satisfy the increasing paranoia fill your government with family members, not knowing who else to trust because so many would like to see you either ousted at best, or assassinated at worst! It hardly seems worth the effort.
It just shows how short-sighted he is, along with being mentally unstable.
It is a real shame the police and military carrying his dirty deeds, maybe one day there will be an uprising and that will be the end of him?
Having said that, it seems often when a revolution takes place, the revolutionary leader promising to liberate the people from tyranny, end up by being an even greater tyrant than the one just deposed!
I hope you and your people will know freedom from this oppression soon, with a decent and fair leader, legally and legitimately elected then taking you all from strength to strength.
Take care my friend. Stay safe and I hope things improve soon.
I wish you the best Pepito. Thanks for replying to my message also.
      Cheers, Anton
      In case you are interested;
the person I referred to who commented defending Ortega has never responded to my questions, I thought were reasonable.
I asked him nicely, not in a rude or challenging way, even so I did not hear back. So a couple of days ago, I wrote what follows. Hopefully he will read it, but again - I doubt I will hear anything back.
      Here's what I wrote ...
      Hi 'No89lan',
I replied to your comment with a genuine reply, respectfully asking for more context.
As you have not responded I can only assume either you are a 'troll' who roams about making wild inflammatory remarks, or you can not answer the questions I asked in a sincere and respectful manner.
I can then only assume your comments are irrelevant and I will continue with my impressions that Ortega IS the MONSTER he is portrayed to be in the featured documentary. If he was not as you claim, he would have no issues with running a fair, legal democratic election.
As he is obviously an Autocratic dictator, it is clear why people live under fear of his brutal homicidal regime.
It is deeply disturbing the way he has placed his unqualified, but obviously loyal, family members into positions of office.
I truly empathise with the good and decent people of Nicaragua, NOT the gangs or criminals, and hope he is overthrown somehow and replaced with a fair and legally elected leader, who will administer the nation with the best interests of their nationals at heart. While also bringing to justice the heavy handed murderers and torturers that have terrorised decent people (not the criminals and gangs etc)
I wish you only peace and happiness. Cheers

The root of Ortega's madness is very simple: it can be traced to the moment he found out he had lost the Feb 1990 elections -- he reasons that if it weren't for all the facets of the US's intervention and meddling in Nicaraguan affairs leading up to those elections, notably propping up UNO and guaranteeing Nicaraguans US assistance if UNO wins, he would've emerged victorious. He's correct about this much and I would be very bitter about it, too. Since then he vowed to do everything he'd find necessary to hold on to power when he returns to it.

So much grief in Nicaragua. Under Somoza's dictatorship, the people's poverty was grinding and yet his family had millions of dollars. Among other things, the family embezzled earthquake relief funds after the Quake of 72. The Sandinistas started out as really making change and helping people to aspire to education, enough food and some semblance of self-governance, but the Reagan administration moved fast to try to quash it because of the word "communism". The brutality that the US supported back in the 80's was horrific - babies bayoneted, atrocities left and right. Ortega tried negotiating with the US but his ambassador waited five DAYS in DC and was told that the people he was supposed to meet were playing golf. That kind of disrespect.
I don't condone what Ortega is doing now, far from it, but the seeds of this violence were sown long ago and Ortega is not the only source of it.
When are we going to learn that impoverished nations breed grief, sorrow, instability and problems for the whole region? We are complaining and complaining about "problems on our border", but we often forget the history that created those problems.
Ortega needs to give up power, but this change needs to come from within Nicaragua and we have to respect the people's decision.
