    5:14 I like how challenger is so eager to start running like a baby deer. It’s rear drivers don’t work quite yet and despite that the front drivers are galloping with all their might trying to pull the rest of its body with it.

    How cool was that? The Challenger had enough power to drag that rear set of locked up drivers. What an exhibition of live steam and true to scale modeling. It's too bad that he didn't blow the whistle, I wonder what a true to scale whistle for the Challenger would sound like?

    Evidently the guy who starts running the 3977 at 04:47 does not know what he is doing. Doesn't let the cylinders heat up and almost immediately breaks the wheels loose. There are some beautiful locomotives in this clip. Years of dedication to bring them to the rails. Great going.

    • @organbuilder272
      @organbuilder272 6 років тому +1

      ZACHARY MIKKO - #1 - You should not take anything - That is stealing. #2 - Regardless of scale there are proper procedures in the operation of a locomotive. One of them is not breaking the drivers loose - Any good engineer would agree. Are you attempting to condone bad operating practices by attacking me? - Wrong is wrong regardless of scale.

    • @organbuilder272
      @organbuilder272 6 років тому

      +ZACHERY MIKKO - I have great respect for steam. I lived in a time when the RR ran on steam. For people like you to take the time, enormous effort and expense to build and operate these things is nothing short of heroic not to mention the cost. I don't care who built that - or any other engine. I can't see that anyone has built many, many, many of them - they take years each unless built from kits - if such is available. I am certain no experienced driver would deliberately break the wheels out. Nor would they run the engine cold. That is what surprised me. I don't think there is a posting that does not speak of the dangers of starting a cold engine and the need to open the cylinder drain cocks right from the start and running for quite a distance before closing them. My comment was born of surprise that an operator would not use a lighter hand on the throttle new or not, and would not run the engine without the drain cocks open to give enough time for the cylinder assembly to properly heat up.. I did not start to damage anyone's reputation, skill or experience. I made a comment based on my surprise. And yes, if you scale down a locomotive you have to scale down the tolerances and that has a practical limit. Can I sooth anyone's bruised feeling by saying - Good-Oh for even daring to build such a monster? Attacking you or anyone else. What would be the gain? I envy you for your toys and ambition. How many of those engines can you build is a lifetime. If may is 5 then he has built 15. If it takes 4 years for each - that is 60 years of continuous work. How old is this gentlemen. AND those wheels were turning when they pushed the engine out onto the track. So let's end it. One cylinder was tight and he was a little hasty in the heating process. I feel certain that whatever the problem - it has been resolved. Whatever happened, the engine looks beautiful, he had fun, the engine runs and there were no wrecks. I suppose you could call that a good day.

      pagansforbreakfast it’s one and the same really. Godshall Custom Machine built this Challenger which is a small outfit in Pennsylvania made up of experienced steam building hobbyists. Each build like this is completely custom per the buyer. Godshall’s offered a run of smaller H10’s which were built in a run all together...ready to run in primer... but the pricing was still $25,000 a locomotive. Most people running steam do not cut checks for the engines in this hobby. They are the tinkering/trades type who enjoy the build process, have the tooling, and like spending their weekends work’n on their locomotive kit. Generally, a build can take 8-10 years +

    Just wanted to thank you for your advice on this scale of modeling as well as a job well done on this vid. I've no idea what I might end up with, as there are sometimes too many designs that one could like to build lol. For someone who is a beginner though, is it better to go coal fired or propane fired on these? I've not heard much difference save for ease of firing.

    • @mark5862
      @mark5862 6 років тому

      Its really personal opinion when it comes to fuel type. For me nothing can compare to the smell of coal and the glow of the firebox that only coal can give. Also gas burners tend to be very noisy and drown out that glorious steam bark, not to mention smell terrible.

      Most folks in the hobby build their own equipment and the only expense is the raw material, drawings, and the tooling. And that is spread out over time as the project is built. Many "new" folks to the hobby are check writers and either have no interest or no ability to do the work themselves. Taking that road into the hobby is extremely expensive.
