I picked up a Reunion Blues RBX2 double case. I absolutely love it!! I don’t fly, so it’s all in town. But it’s so good! No problems at all. Very convenient. Even my Les Paul does well. I’m not ready to drop it off a building. But I’m not ready to do that with a hard case either.

...and regarding the "Bridge Pickup in the Neck Position" topic: I ALSO agree with your thoughts there! I would add that as high-output Bridge P'ups were developed, many a "Hard Rocker" (later, the Metal guys) found that the stock Bridge P'ups (Gibson H/Buckers, primarily) were an ideal compliment to the "Hot Rodded" H/Buckers they'd mounted into the Bridge: providing compatible output and distinctive tonal counterpoint in the Neck position.

I've had guitar cases for years. But I just got a Gator soft case and really like it. It's not really a case, not really a gig bag. But it's light weight, and that is the direction I'm going with all my gear as I get older.

I don't disagree at all, and I'm not the biggest Fender fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I think the same is true of most brands, they keep making what's successful. Fender continuing to make the same models says more about guitar players than it says about Fender. Any big brand knows what their customers want and if Fender's customers wanting something other than Strats and Teles, Fender would make something other than Strats and Teles. Think about this, most new brands just make copies of Gibson and Fender. Those are the guitars people want.
When Gibson was at their low point they were constantly trying new things, but the problem was that Gibson was listening to comments from people who aren't going to buy a Gibson no matter what they do, rather than listening to their customers. The first thing that their new management did was simplify the lineup and go back to more traditional specs and it couldn't have been more successful

I was fully ready to spend $1600-2000 on an American Fender... this was Covid 2020
    Pro I, Ultra I...
But nothing stood out to me.
I ended up buying a Warmoth, and having a Partscaster built.
    It's awesome
It's everything I wanted for about the same price. Premium everything. Not unlimited custom, but damn near perfect for me.
The fact that they missed out on that sale, it's fully on them that they didn't provide more options, a better selection, better colors, at that price.

Funny thing is I just bought an American Ultra Strat (first series) from Sweetwater a few days before the Ultra 2 series was announced and MINE has a quartersawn neck. So, in my mind, the main “new” features are the “improved” noiseless pickups and new colors, and a new color is not a feature.

I too very recently purchased (at a very substantial discount delivered) the Fender Ultra (ver 1) Texas Tea Telecaster with Compound Rosewood Fretboard. Yes, the quarter-sawn, ebony ver 2 neck would have been nice, but I really enjoy playing the ver 1 guitar. The fit and finish is great. It feels great and sounds great, too! IMO, I do not feel it is worth paying a significant premium for the ver 2 Fender Ultra Telecaster.

I think the difference is now most colors can be had with either maple or rosewood fretboard.... before on the ultra 1 I think it was limited to certain colors to get a rosewood.... that new deep blue with the dark neck looks sweet

I think that guitar manufacturers should offer 3 options for a case or gig bag for a reasonable cost : 1) no case or gig bag at no add on cost, 2) a good gig bag which would add on to the cost of the guitar, 3) a hard case which would cost even more.
Or do it the other way around: The cost of the guitar includes a hard case, but reduce the price accordingly for a gig bag or no case/gig bag.
I love the tones you're getting from the new amp, and the story along with it.

  • @howardthrust

More great topics here, Philip! Starting with the "Case/Gigbag" subject: I pretty much agree with your thoughts, here. I might add that a good quality bag is less likely to cause actual DAMAGE TO the guitar than a mediocre quality case might. I'm not just commenting "theoretically" here; and in response to potential skeptics, I recommend doing a deeper dive into the catastrophe that Iconic/B.C. Rich Guitars recently had to deal with...

I will die on the hill that the best Strat/Tele/almost any Fender GUITAR is a partscaster from a quality manufacturer like Warmoth. The only benefit of owning a Fender is the headstock sticker and resale value. But if you want a **guitar** to play that has most everything you want, especially if Fender paywalls that feature or refuse to make it a standard feature (looking at you contoured heel) just go bolt one together. Odds are it'll cost you less and you get to pick up some useful DIY skills along the way, too. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Eart vs Hils: Eart with the 5 piece neck is a better more stable neck, roasted maple is good but the 5 piece is that, with added strength and more stability. They introduced painted neck versions and I feel like that's a cost cutting move. Also I like the jack placement better on the Eart.

yes most guitars ship with 2.0mm action at the 12th fret, it hides flaws in fretwork and sounds better when played acoustically, no buzzing.. Unlike acoustic guitars that need 2.0mm action to work properly electric guitars can easily have 1.5mm action or a little lower and have no buzzing if the fretwork is good.
Thats my experience, I have 16 guitars and I aim for low action 1.0-1.5mm though its not always possible. In my collection maybe 3 guitars haven't needed fret work to get there.

A quarter sawn neck won't flex as much in the directions a truss rod can adjust for (up and down) but can more easily flex side to side than a flat sawn neck. I don't see why that would be an improvement.

    • @GhostpainOG
      @GhostpainOG 3 місяці тому

I'm going to say yes because, and this is just my thoughts, roasting is a way to make the wood more stable by "crystallizing" the wood cells, (and possibly add desirable tonal qualities) not make it more structurally sound. Quarter sawing is about structural soundness. Kiesels example of cardboard is valid, but think of a bunch of popsicle sticks glued together. Regardless of what you do to the sticks, ie., roasting, the orientation determines how much flex there is in the direction of the string pull(the most tenstion).
So flat-swan the string pull is runs "with the grain" and quartersawn runs, essentially, 90 degrees perpendicular to the grain. One will flex more with tension, one will not.
And the reason quartersawn is an upcharge is that you get fewer quartersawn than flatsawn boards out of the same log based solely on the cutting process.

    • @jc6721
      @jc6721 3 місяці тому

@@GhostpainOG The reason I asked the question is because every since roasting maple became a thing it's biggest selling point is that it becomes impervious to humidity and significantly lowers the possibility of developing a twist, thus you won't have to adjust the truss rod when the seasons change or worry about losing your investment on an expensive neck. Isn't this basically the same positive attributes a quartersawn neck gives you?
I understand that a quartersawn piece of lumber is stronger than flatsawn, BUT if it's roasted then does quartersawn vs flatsawn neck debate become a moot point? I am asking because I have recently seen some neck makers offer roasted quartersawn maple as an upgrade over roasted hard maple... Is the overkill?

    • @GhostpainOG
      @GhostpainOG 3 місяці тому

@@jc6721 Short answer, no, not the same. Quartersawn is better than flat sawn regardless of the roasting process. Roasted quartersawn would be at the top of that pyramid, yes.
Also, be wary of marketing. Roasting, when done properly, is just a way to both remove moisture and crystalize/stabilize the cells of the wood, it's not a replacement for structural integrity.
The only material I've seen that didn't need to be adjusted for seasonal change is carbon fiber.

@@GhostpainOG Thanks for the response. Just out of curiosity , may I ask what is your level of expertise regarding this subject? Perhaps I am not communicating my point clearly but I have multiple Reverend guitars with roasted maple necks, Warmoth and Parklane roasted maple necks and not a single one has moved or needed adjustments in the several years I have toured with them and also I live in NY which gets crazy humidity changes from season to season .... That's just my experience and why I ask the question, regarding overkill.

I was this close to ordering a guitar from the Fender Mod Shop but I ended up using a local boutique luthier after seeing multiple reports of low quality guitars coming out of Fender's American factory. I'm not American; and I don't want a Chinese guitar. Luckily, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc are excellent options. They pay employees much better than Fender USA, and the quality is significantly better at/around the $1000 to $1500 USD price point.

I'm originally a sax player, since single digit childhood. I much rather have a gig bag. My first pro level instrument, I would definitely have bought a better one even if the gig bag as crap. I was headed to Berklee, so of course I needed a gig bag.
Hard cases, flight cases, that's a whole separate purchase.

With an acoustic guitar a hard case is mandatory for a high-end acoustic. You cannot humidify an acoustic in a gig bag. Even electric guitars in a very dry climate you need to humidify to prevent fret sprout and you can't do that in a gig bag

I dont like the angled switch on the teles, they look knockoff. Im not too big on the colors except texas tea and avalanche is warming up to me but thats about it. I do however really love the luminlay, rubberized knobs and heavier knurled knobs on the tele and p bass

I played a gig once at the Old Train Station in Tuscaloosa Alabama- and when we left the gig, we were following a van that had our gear in it. We get up the road a good way and the van gets a good piece ahead of us, a cop car gets between us and the van. And then we come to the first red light after having left the venue- and the back van doors pop open, these two dudes jump out with their arms full and wham- they're face to face with two of Tuscaloosa's finest. The cops just stepped out of their car and busted them- they didn't even try to run or anything. And yes- we did press charges and see it through- those two got some pretty serious charges on them. We got all our stuff back- but they did break a couple things trying to get what they wanted. They stole mics, mixing board, recording interface, stuff like that- I assume they were aspiring rappers- because they damn sure weren't thieves, at least not good ones anyway. Apparently, they were in the back of the van when we came out and they just stayed put, thinking they would duck out at the first redlight and not be seen. They should've looked out the back glass before trying to make their great escape. LOL

Leave your expensive museum wall hangers at home.
Granted, the best gig bags are expensive, it's not cheap.
My acoustic came with a hard bag. It's great. It's not as strong as a hard case, but it's quite sturdy as long as I'm careful with it.

I have to do this tooo and this came up while the stain on the DIY bass Im building is drying. This my list if anyones interested-
I need to completely re-wire an Ibanez RGT421dx..its sick, but i mounted microphonic pickups in it and new pots but..its all just wires hanging out the back and the tren is held by the 2 E strings…thjng needs help and i miss playing it
I bought the music nomad z file and i have an epiphone 339 pro i got from L&M used for like $379 last spring but it plays…kind of like garbage. It needs two hours of fret work, fret erasing, micro mesh and steel wool. I also want to put seymour duncans in it..i have a pile of them and a pair of D activators..those need to go somewhere
I bought a vangoa acoustic on amazon for couch playing, and i need to put a fishman pickup in it. There is no wiring involved and i have a ton of carpentry tools so thats like, 1.5 hour job max, but what will take actual time is m: rehumidifying that guitar, breaking in the ‘soundbox’, soaking in and rolling the fretboard, polishing the scratchy frets, putting some actual brass tuners on it(guarantee the holes will need reaming😅) these things thake work but theyre worth the effort wheen youre done. Gave the last one to my sister and her daughters to have a cutaway dread bc i hate cutaway acoustics…i only buy them to re sell after couching them😂
I need to take the single coil out of my Prestige 1570…i dont use it and the a kill spot in the middle. Need to fix that, too
I have a parlor vangoa acoustic that is great and i did some work on it but..same as the other vangoa, needs fretwork, need to just let it sit with the soundhole in front of a speaker for a weekend at med volume…needs me to hand dremel a new nut and saddle out of some blanks i have but..acoustic work alone this week i have at least two full days of light work
I need to re wire my first ever electric an ibanez xiphos. The pots are cooked i think i cant

If I buy a guitar that comes with a nice case it makes the whole experience better IMO. 3 or 4 years ago I bought my first brand new Gibson, it was $1500 and distinctly remember how special that experience was, the guitar was perfect, couldn't have been happier with it, but the case added so much to the experience. I had never bought a guitar that included a case anywhere close to as nice. I keep my guitars out because I play them, including that Les Paul, but the first few days of owning that LP I put it the case with the lid open just because of the feeling I had seeing the guitar and the case together. 2 years ago I got a great deal on an Explorer that was used but essentially brand new, it also included a case that blew me away even more, probably because its huge, I'm pretty sure I could fit in that thing. I did the same thing with that one where i kept it in the case with the lid open for a few days. The cases are so nice that I wish I used them more than once or twice a week to transport the guitars. As silly as it may seem, the case factors into my decision if im buying a guitar. I'm not going to buy a Gibson over another guitar simply because of the case, but knowing that most brands won't have as nice of a case, if they have one at all, does factor into my decision.

  • @admarhermans1

I play bass. I really dislike cases because they only offer false protection.
I might be fully aware of that, but others handling my bass or walking up to me in the streets, train or bus don’t. They tend to bump into you quite rude easier when you’re handling a case... Accidents will happen...
My cases are safe in the attic. They’re not roadcases, so that’s really where they belong.
I invested in some high quality gigbags almost twenty years ago and still use them every day.
They make people moving around me more civil.
The only brand I know of that provided a quality gigbag with their sub $1500.- instrument is Yamaha.
Sold the bass, still own and use the gigbag after 15 years!
The shitty Fender ones that come with basses from Mexico are the worst! A shame. I donate them to our music school to use for indoors only. To keep the dust away...

So- if you guys had a choice between a PRS SE Custom 24 quilt, a PRS SE Custom 24-08 quilt, a PRS SE Silver Sky, or a PRS SE Paul's guitar- which one would you get, and why? I'm leaning toward the Custom 24 quilt or the Custom 24-08 quilt. Paul's guitar I really liked- until I noticed that compensated wrap around bridge- not really my cup of tea. I'm a stickler about intonation- in fact that's why I'm buying a new, more expensive/higher end guitar (relative to what I have now)- because I'm sick of fighting intonation issues. This guitar will cost about twice what my Classic Vibe or Ibanez SP-3 costed- and I'm really hoping that means good intonation. If not- I would just stick with what I already have because that's my only issue with them- intonation. Well- actually the CV intonates pretty well- but the Volume pot went out on it. I already have the assembly to replace all the pots and the 5 way switch. I just need to install it and then I might just stick with the CV 70s HSS Strat- it's an amazing guitar really. Imo every bit as good as the MIM Player Strat I've tried. It's got alnico 5s in it, which I think is what the Player series runs anyway. If they would put quality pots and 5-way into the CV series- they would be right on par with the Fender Player imo.

re American guitar makers trying to downshift expecations to gig bags instead of cases = keep it up guys. Then complain about folks like me looking at Hsienmo and other Chinese, Singapore manufacturers who are gunning for the higher quality market and understand a quality instrument deserves real protection around it. And have to strongly disagree with you, Phil: Leaving aside the obvious difference in breakage protection, which applies to guitars across the spectrum , cases are essential for quality acoustic or hollow / semi hollow guitars, if you're serious about humidity control / preventing your guitar from becoming kindling.

So, ...'hotter' pickups run hotter coz they have a higher Ohms resistance (more windings/thicker wire). Normies usually put hotter pickups in the bridge, cooler in the neck. However some prominent Rock Star Johnnies do it the other way around. Have I got that right?
