  • New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters, a veteran politician who first entered parliament in 1979, is charged with steering the South Pacific nation through tricky regional geopolitics that have global implications.
Peters, as leader of the New Zealand First Party, is part of a conservative coalition government that has become increasingly vocal in the last year about its concerns over China’s growing influence in the Pacific. He has at the same time led a push to strengthen ties with the United States, meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on a trip to the United States, Egypt and Europe earlier this year.
Peters, a former New Zealand Maori rugby representative, sits down with Reuters Global Breaking News Editor Leela de Kretser for a conversation during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
