Try moving it into another kalimba body. I'm guessing the body is not perfectly flat where the tines are screwed as a result, the grounding bar has unecessary tension in bending that would inhibit resonance on some tines. -just a theory but might work.
I have found this technique to be quite effective in fixing stiff tines: Tap the tine upward a few notes, from a C to an E, e.g. Let it sit overnight. In the morning, tap it back into normal tune. I've found that's all it takes probably four out of five times. If it is necessary to repeat, I sometimes will tap the tine downward to several notes lower. Again, let it sit 12 hours or so and retune normally. It works for me!

Omg thank you so muchhh.. this tutorial makes my kalimba sounds better 😭 just with moving the tines left and right. Even my mom notice the difference I always thought that my kalimba's tines are bad, but they are just stiff after all

Yehey so informative!!! In addition to that, the body (thickness and width) of the kalimba and how the wooden bridge was setup on top of the flatboard body also affects the tines, sometimes the frequency of the sound is cancelled due to those factors, resulting to dead tines.
Thank you for this video!I was supposed to use my Kalimba for my school song cover project but the high end tines were tight😭 It really makes me sad that I can't use it 'coz it doesn't sound nice at all😪 Especially that I'm planning to play River Flows in You😪

Thank you so much for this video! I still struggle to tell the difference between stiff and dead (my kalimba's high keys sound like this!), but I'll try lowering the key and see if it helps. :D Since mine is my first one, it's not great quality but it will do until I'm better at playing!
Ooh you can definitely give it a try! Well, there is only one kalimba brand that i know that has dead keys (the one i used 😆) so i think the keys are just stiff. Tell me how it goes 🥰
My lingting kalimba is so tight, i can't even tune it properly! I tried to put the paper as you said but some of them got stuck between the tines, but i was able to remove it 😅 But Can you please suggest any ideas to stop the tightens of tines?
Oh no I have a dead tine on my kalimba, and it's one of the lowest tines... I doesnt bother me that much tho because weirdly I kind of like the sound, for me it's like when you play guitar and then when you switch levels you hear that really high-pitched buzz
I am newbie in kalimba and it's just 2 days that i starting too learn it so 2 keys of my kalimba was buzzing and "i found something similar with paper method", i put a piece of paper just like the video but instead of put it on bridge, i put it on the top of kalimba(on the wooden part i mean) i know i know maybe not the right method but it worked for me and my kalimba keys are OK without to lose too much resonance so THANK YOU for this video that gave me that idea ❤
Let me tell my theory about dead keys. The dead key comes in pairs ie equal distance from center. Those lengths of thines resonate in similar frequency. Some how matches the natural frequency of the body of the kalimba. Causing the vibration to reach our hands and cancel out quickly. The dead keys comes alive when you play it with bottom end of kalimba placed on a table. I am thinking if sticking the kalimba body with some different material with glue will solve the problem. I might be wrong. But I just want to know if the case is same for all of u with dead keys.
I made a kalimba myself (walnut), and it sounds amazing! But unfortunately, there is a dead time (A2) and and half-dead one (G2). Indeed, those are symmetric. And I also noticed that when I play a dead tine, I could feel that my kalimba vibrates strongly, as if the vibrations are going into its body and cancel themselves. Extending the instrument is a very interesting idea, I will try to explore this option indeed!
Dead key can be one. Resonance depends on key length (note), not on its distance from center. Every resonator (kalimba body) has its working range - it is little different because of natural material shape/density deviations and imperfection of fastening attaching geometry precision. When manufacturer inserting high keys on a border of good body diapason, it can randoply become dead. Some manufacturers ignore quality at all, making kalimbas by blind copying from a pictures and some notes are always outsige good resonance range. It is just instrument quality.
Also my kalimba was something i prayed to good for the first time i saw one on tiktok and a few months later i recieved one for a birthday gift just a quick testimony of how good our God is and that he does answer prayers hallelujah
Ordered my Kalimba yesterday its coming today, and i really love your videos, could you suggest me one of yours that i can watch for learning how to play? I've watched about 7 of your videos so far! And i think your tips are amazing! -I hope you have a lovely day thanks for all of the great videos!
Very helpful! I saw a kalimba for the first time (I know crazy right) yesterday and I was immediate attracted to it. Planning of getting one soon! Thanks for the wonderful videos!
This is the first video I watched from your channel and the moment I heard your outro where you said "may the Lord bless you and may His face shine upon you and may He be gracious to you." I immediately hit the subscribe button and followed you on instagram. Hahaha! Btw, I just got my kalimba few days ago and your tips are really helpful. Thank you! More kalimba tips to come. Keep safe and God bless you! PS. I love your voice, your english and your energy.
i came rush after my kalimba fell and the tines are not in straight anymore i get panic and when i watch this video i figured out that u can move the tines and fix it with ur hammer, thank u ate💗
Thank you for this video! It has helped me realize that one of the tines was not dead. It just wasn't long enough for the high notes. Now I know how to get my kalimba sounding as good as I can, and later I'll look for a better quality one. Thanks!!!
I have a CATANIA. 8 Keys. My top bridge is a round aluminum bar. The Bottonm one is Brass. Mine is also a solid wood base. I did add a finger ring like the ones for a cell phone, on the back. My left middle finger is inside the ring to keep it balanced and supported...this made it more relaxing and not having to grip it too tight. What is the Best times to look for and can you request to have the dead keys be replaced? Luckily all my times have a lovely resonance and os in tune...I do have to adjust but vibrations will cause that and not having a case. I just solo pick...no chords yet..no music to go by...just learning to get my thumbs knowing where the sound or the pitch is. I play bass clarinet. And the Kalimba?..An instrument that fits in your hand? Wonderful to sit outside in a comfy chair and play for the silent neighborhood. Thank you..and now to learn the answers...
Hi there, D Corbitt! That's so cool that you have an 8 key kalimba! I have one too, and it's from Gecko. I think that's very resourceful of you to place a finger ring on the back of your kalimba. I should definetly give that a try. ❤️ For the tines, well, the good thing about the 8 keys is that rarely, and i mean, rarely will it have any issues because of its parts and built. So as long as it's well taken care of, no replacement needed. :) I also think that you learning the placements of the fingers and letters is very smart. This too is my personal practice, so that when i do read notes, i can play by just reading, which i know you too will be able to do (or maybe you are already able to do so since you play the clarinet, which i think it extremely cool by the way 😍)
Im getting mg kalimba soon. This was really helpful bcz im not very familiar to kalimba but when i saw it i thought i should try. Thanks for the info. New subscriber here!
I dont know if its just me but i found myself fascinated not only in the kalimba but as well as your personality The more I watched your clips the more im drawn into it.. Dont know how to describe it but it's quite "enchanted". Dont get the wrong idea here. Just interested of who you will become in the future. Keep it up. Hi, i have a problem with my hollow kalimba i feel one key doesn't resonate as long as the others but it doesn't sound dead either. Do you have any advice for that?
I do watch your videos to be prepared when I already have my own kalimba, maybe I'll buy one in Christmas and hoping that the product I will order is in a good condition and btw, kalimba will be my first ever instrument that's why I can't wait and I'm so so so excitedddd

I know this was posted two years ago, but I have a question. So, my lower C tine was buzzing, so I tried your paper trick, but that only made it worse. The kalimba is much louder than before and all of the surrounding tines are buzzing. What do I do?

I think I’ll be needing a more in depth tutorial regarding the dead key and tight key, like how to adjust it. Huhu. I just bought one and I’m anxious that I might have made a wrong decision to learn the kalimba since I didn’t know that there’ll be these kind of keys in the long run. Though I know it can be fixed because of your video, it’s just that I’m not confident especially when I really don’t know how to do it. Well, I was trying to understand how you did it, but I’m still confused. 😣😣😣 I’m scared that I might not be able to make “panindigan” my decision to learn this instrument. ☹️☹️
I have a question, my kalimba just arrived yesterday and I have ZERO knowledge on musical instruments. I've been trying to play a simple music but whenever the tab says to pluck the tine twice in a row, the tine create a buzz because it hit my fingers when I want to pluck it the second time. I noticed that it was because the tine haven't stopped vibrating from that first pluck and I basically forced it to stop with my fingers so it create that buzz. The others seems to not have any problem similar to mine so I'm wondering how to prevent it, it really bothered me especially because I use a thumb pick instead of bare nails (I have a very short nails, it didn't even go past my skin)
So I have a kalimba problem where it sounds like it was like a cow bell went "bwah bwah" kind of like all of these combined but the most that it is showing is dead tines but oddly I really don't want to get a new kalimba because every other note seems fine its just the F°° and C°° and A° And B° And the D°° that sound a little weird every other key sounds perfect, Btw my Kalimba is a 17 key it is wooden and has 2 small holes in the back and 1 big hole in the center of it. Do you happen to know of any way to help this situation?
hahahaha! promise bibilangin ko lahat ng comments na nag sasabi nyan. :D pero aangkinin ko na hahahah! you're so welcome by the way. nawa'y helpful mga lessons naten :D
Ordered two LinTing flatboard Kalimba's in C. One came from China and one came from Amazon. Both came without dead tines and NO buzzing. I think LingTing is a quality Kalimba and the makers don't send out any crap! I really believe they are tested before sent to a customer. I bought 2 hollow Kalimba's for my Sister and Nephew... both had bad end tines.
Hi Sheryl! Well, that is for sure. Especially if the seller is really connected with lingting? Their quality control is amazing! So i am genuinely so happy that you have the good kind of Kalimba. How about the one you bought for your sister and nephew, what kind of kalimba was it?
@@TipsKalimba The other two were from Amazon - Moozica 17 key. the 4 high tines were dead on one, and the other same tine buzzing and 3 dead tines. Awful. So my Nephew gave his Autistic brother one of them. He loves it, and does not know what dead tines are, he just likes to pluck away at it :)
@@TipsKalimba Yeah! >< It was my very first Kalimba, a cheap one. It was fine until a few months ago it got this buzzing sound and I believe one key might be dead :c So I worked for a part time job and earned enough to get myself a new one ^^ You inspired me for that~ ❤
i think the 3 end keys are either dead or stiff. they don’t play nearly as good as every other key, and i just got mine today :( is “Happy Kalimba” a cheap site/brand to purchase from?
Thank you very much for this video and this channel. I recived my first kalimba yesterday, and the key 1 has a buzzy sound, so, this video is very helpful for me. I just learn play "path of the wind", (only the first part jejeje). I have subscribed to your channel. You are lovely. Kisses from Spain and thanks again.
Hi just got a new kalimba MY NUMBER LOWER 6 JUST GOT AN UNHARMONIED TINE ITS LIKE A SPOOKY VIBE WHILE THE others have the usuallly normal vibe Pls help me about this Thank you if you responded.
Ehe, i wasn't expecting that 😅 Hiiii~ (Pls don't come at me if it doesn't work for you. I mean, that cega crystal hollow kalimba is like a bad dream. It is dead. It may or may not work for you.) And yeah, it is not a dead tine but a dead body. Hollow kalimbas usually have end tines that are mute, maybe because the top wood is thin. For my first comparison vid, I measured the thickness. Gecko K17K: 3mm Aklot Bear: 4mm I wondered if this is the reason why my K17K has muted tines while my Aklot doesn't. Because I also read that flatboards shouldn't have this problem because it is a solid wood. The denser, the harder the tonewood is, it will have more resonance. Newer Hugh Tracey kalimbas are heavier because they used a thicker wood for the front plate to get rid of muted end tines. I haven't tried their suggested fix but I will share the result if it worked. (Oh and don't come at me if you receive a faulty Aklot Bear kalimba. Idk why mine is cuteee and near perfect and yours isn't.)
Hahahahaha! Of course! You fully deserve to be acknowledged for this great idea of yours 🥰 (And yes, please only give love to ms. Dreamkeeper_88. Our intentions are good. Promise 😆) Aaah i love this info! This is very helpful. So thank you for sharing this insight with us. 🥰❤️

hey! I'm planning to buy a kalimba. do you think flat board kalimbas are the ones that doesn't cause much problem than the other kalimbas? i need your opinion for this, thank u!😊
I have a kalimba where all the tines were good when I got it, besides maybe one. But I dropped it, and now 3 tines on each high end side are dead. How can I fix it? I don't want to change the tuning. Thanks!
So I've had mine for a little now, I had picked it up today and tried to play but one note sounded off. It's not like anything in the video, I tried a couple things you mentioned but nothing seems to be helping the note get back on tune. Do you have any ideas?

Gosh! Ate! Finally!!!Thanks for helping us to make this information reachable. I will try to fix the problem of my KALIMBA.
Aww so glad!! I love that term you used... Reachable. 😍
Thank you so mush! I was thinking that sound "zzz" will never gone. Just moving the key from left to right - thats one was need to do. Thanks :)
Oh congratulations on that. I am so Happy for you 😍
Thank you for these tips. As a beginner, it feels like I have a kalimba coach because of your videos. God bless you!
Aww. I really appreciate that. There's so much life in what you said so thank you 🥰❤️
My lingting kalimba is so tight, i can't even tune it properly! I tried to put the paper as you said but some of them got stuck between the tines, but i was able to remove it 😅 But Can you please suggest any ideas to stop the tightens of tines?
Hi. Is this hollow or flat?
@@TipsKalimba it's a flatboard kalimba :))
Mine too, it’s too tight. 😢
Hello ! I got my first Kalimba this week. Thank you for your videos that made me buy a Kalimba. It's so nice to start in music with a kalimba.
Ooh that's so cool! Congratulations on that! I hope you will enjoy the kalimba 😄
Oh no I have a dead tine on my kalimba, and it's one of the lowest tines... I doesnt bother me that much tho because weirdly I kind of like the sound, for me it's like when you play guitar and then when you switch levels you hear that really high-pitched buzz
Woah! That's quite something huh? Well, I'm glad that you kinda' like it then 😍
I'm so excited to get my kalimba but I have to make sure I know what I'm doing. Gotta be a responsible musician!
Thanks you for sharing your knowledge in a digestible and concise way. This helps us newbies so much!
Aww. I love that. Thank you for sharing that with me ❤️❤️
I am newbie in kalimba and it's just 2 days that i starting too learn it
so 2 keys of my kalimba was buzzing and "i found something similar with paper method", i put a piece of paper just like the video but instead of put it on bridge, i put it on the top of kalimba(on the wooden part i mean)
i know i know maybe not the right method but it worked for me and my kalimba keys are OK without to lose too much resonance
so THANK YOU for this video that gave me that idea ❤
Let me tell my theory about dead keys.
The dead key comes in pairs ie equal distance from center. Those lengths of thines resonate in similar frequency. Some how matches the natural frequency of the body of the kalimba. Causing the vibration to reach our hands and cancel out quickly.
The dead keys comes alive when you play it with bottom end of kalimba placed on a table.
I am thinking if sticking the kalimba body with some different material with glue will solve the problem.
I might be wrong. But I just want to know if the case is same for all of u with dead keys.
Woah! This is so substantial! I really enjoyed reading this. Thank you so much for sharing this insight of yours. 😍
Thank you for sharing this, Arseny! But i must say that that is just incredible how you made a Kalimba by yourself! 😍
I just got my Kalimba yesterday and it already has dead tines 🥺😭😭
Oh no! Does it has a return policy?
same ! it's the brand pasadena..

Very helpful! I saw a kalimba for the first time (I know crazy right) yesterday and I was immediate attracted to it. Planning of getting one soon! Thanks for the wonderful videos!
Hahaha! I so can relate! I also got a kalimba the moment i saw it from April yang 😆

THANKYOU! Why do i just get this recommended now.. I lowkey have all the problems
I finally now know the problem with my kalimba, thank you so much!!! You are so great and very accommodating in ig. Im crying ❤️🥺
Aaaaw Vhia that's so kind of you to say. I really appreciate it 😭❤️
Just ordered one so now I'm paranoid but I love your video thank you!
i came rush after my kalimba fell and the tines are not in straight anymore i get panic and when i watch this video i figured out that u can move the tines and fix it with ur hammer, thank u ate💗
Thank you for this video! It has helped me realize that one of the tines was not dead. It just wasn't long enough for the high notes. Now I know how to get my kalimba sounding as good as I can, and later I'll look for a better quality one. Thanks!!!
That's awesome 😍
For the tines, well, the good thing about the 8 keys is that rarely, and i mean, rarely will it have any issues because of its parts and built. So as long as it's well taken care of, no replacement needed. :)
I also think that you learning the placements of the fingers and letters is very smart. This too is my personal practice, so that when i do read notes, i can play by just reading, which i know you too will be able to do (or maybe you are already able to do so since you play the clarinet, which i think it extremely cool by the way 😍)
Thank you for the tips again, I'm so glad to find yours 💕 bless you and have a nice day!
I appreciate that. Thank you so much for sharing that with me ❤️😊
Salamat nito ate, kahit wala pa akong kalimba atleast may alam ako ng kunti kapag nagka problema

Thank you!! This video is really helpful!! I was searching everywhere on how to make some of the notes less stiffer.
I dont know if its just me but i found myself fascinated not only in the kalimba but as well as your personality
The more I watched your clips the more im drawn into it.. Dont know how to describe it but it's quite "enchanted". Dont get the wrong idea here. Just interested of who you will become in the future. Keep it up. Still learning how to fix the "dead tine" of my kalimba
Awww. This has got to one of my favorite comments of all time. Wow, Bryan. Thank you so much for sharing this with me. I too became interested of what the future holds. Wow honestly speechless with this. So... Thank you. ❤️

My birthday is in the end of June as well btw though it is now the middle of April when i am seeing this
Hi, i have a problem with my hollow kalimba i feel one key doesn't resonate as long as the others but it doesn't sound dead either.
Aaaah! So excited for you, Kiesha!!! 😍❤️

@@TipsKalimba @Tip's Kalimba hi po, I received my Kalimba kanina and I'm happy na there are no dead tines and no problem on the tines. I just have to tune it a little bit. I can't wait to learn how to play my favorite songs. Thank you so much for your tips and info you share with us in your channel. Happy 39.4k subs po!💖
Do you happen to know of any way to help this situation?
very helpful, had this issue with my stiff keys.
Hi Miss. Super kamukha niyo po talaga si Maxene Magalona. Hihi. Thank you po sa mga lessons about Kalimba! 💗✨✨✨
hahahaha! promise bibilangin ko lahat ng comments na nag sasabi nyan.
Thanks for sharing! Your videos are so wonderful and helpful. Keep sharing! ❤❤❤

OMG I was literally thinking about how off tune my old kalimba sounds and then you post this video 😂
Thank you, miss Tip~ ♡ 🌻💕
Hahahahahha! I love the timing then! 🤣 Well tell me about this old Kalimba of yours 👀
@@TipsKalimba Yeah! >< It was my very first Kalimba, a cheap one. It was fine until a few months ago it got this buzzing sound and I believe one key might be dead :c
So I worked for a part time job and earned enough to get myself a new one ^^
You inspired me for that~ ❤
i think the 3 end keys are either dead or stiff. they don’t play nearly as good as every other key, and i just got mine today :( is “Happy Kalimba” a cheap site/brand to purchase from?
Thank you very much for this video and this channel. I recived my first kalimba yesterday, and the key 1 has a buzzy sound, so, this video is very helpful for me. I just learn play "path of the wind", (only the first part jejeje). I have subscribed to your channel. You are lovely. Kisses from Spain and thanks again.
Woah! I'm so happy for you! Congratulations on that. For sure you are capable of playing the whole song in time 😉❤️
Hi just got a new kalimba MY NUMBER LOWER 6 JUST GOT AN UNHARMONIED TINE ITS LIKE A SPOOKY VIBE WHILE THE others have the usuallly normal vibe Pls help me about this Thank you if you responded.
P.S i tried all of this but none worked
Found another video about how you can slightly stretch the stiff keys at the end and it kind of worked
Ehe, i wasn't expecting that 😅 Hiiii~ (Pls don't come at me if it doesn't work for you. I mean, that cega crystal hollow kalimba is like a bad dream. It is dead. It may or may not work for you.)
And yeah, it is not a dead tine but a dead body. Hollow kalimbas usually have end tines that are mute, maybe because the top wood is thin. For my first comparison vid, I measured the thickness.
Gecko K17K: 3mm
Aklot Bear: 4mm
I wondered if this is the reason why my K17K has muted tines while my Aklot doesn't.
Hahahahaha! Of course! You fully deserve to be acknowledged for this great idea of yours 🥰
(And yes, please only give love to ms. Dreamkeeper_88. Our intentions are good. Promise 😆)
Aaah i love this info! This is very helpful. So thank you for sharing this insight with us. 🥰❤️

aww thank you for the love, sissy! much love! :D
I'm nervous now 😬 what if my kalimba have dead tines, and stiff sound. I will receive it tomorrow btw huhu please It's my first kalimba i hope it's all good
