Thanks Shawn. Katla is definitely one to watch. Some of those tremors were recorded as being from the surface. Could they have been signs of ice or snow moving?
Great report, especially about the new Iceland website. As a retired Earth Science teacher, I wish we had that comprehensive site for our Cascadia subduction zone, and the San Andreas strike slip zone. Both have stresses building, but have very important local factors. The News stations can only report on what the scientists like you give them. We need Gelogical "weather" Situation Reports to educate the public.
Thank you Shawn. I enjoy watching yours and Gylfi's videos tremendously. I suppose I am a failed geologist/vulcanologist. I used to enjoy reading up about geomorphology, but could not afford varsity to study in that field. That is why I am always eager to see what your insights are. Keep well and take care. Sending you best wishes from NZ.
Thank you, Shawn! We really appreciate your updates which are always very informative and filled with lots of news and scientific data (ty Amanda Jo and Bruce for their very valuable help :) Gylfi (Just Icelandic) just put out a video about Katla and the recent glacial flood. This event was one of the three largest Katla events since it last erupted in 1918, he said... Anyway, the floods are over now and the road is fixed (almost!): Icelanders never cease to amaze me :)
Pretty neat to understand the charts and maps better after so many online videos, Shawn. [Bruce, your graph shows (graphically 😉) a very interesting earthquake relationship.] Katla's event adds to our knowledge of the Icelanders' lives! Interesting but challenging. Thanks again!
Young man, thank you for the content, makes things exciting indeed, thank you to all your assistants as well, for helping to put a bow on everything, now do take the best of care and everybody, stay safe... please💕
Thanks for the update, Shawn! And to Amanda Jo for wrangling all the info for you! Bruce’s charts are awesome. After learning more about the Ice Age floods, it’s so interesting to see a similar glacial outburst flood today!
The ground rise thing, that's awesome. I do the exact same thing with Kilauea. For the most part at Kilauea, it's a range of 0.20 meters to 0.25 meters of total ground uplift before an intrusion. I also like the projection of end of August, that's what I called about a month ago. ;)
Thanks for the update! After watching the reports on the previous eruption, I've been a regular watcher, and catch each new video as it comes out. Looking forward to the updates on this next eruption.
Hi Shawn! Thank you for this update. I will travel soon to Iceland, so I appreciate all the information you always give to us. Also, I like the way you explain all these concepts, maps, charts, in a simple way that we all can understand. Thanks again!
Thank you for another informative update, Shawn, both from the Svartsengi area and the Katla area. As always, well paced and easy to follow and understand.
Haha good save on the head in front of the graph 🤣. Does Bruce have a website to post his awesome interpretations of data? I have often wanted to go back and check the predictions against actual events, then struggle to find the right video where you share it. Also I really hope they adjust the scale on the gps data again. 🤦🏻♀️
QUESTION: They built that berm at the top of the hill over the power plant. The lava hasn't moved in that direction yet, so I assume that is a sort of saddle between the two mountains that has a higher elevation than the valley. Each eruption raises the height of the lave field, though. Are there topographic maps that show what is going on there?
This was fascinating and your charts and pictures helped to give a great overview of the activity as well as the topography. Now I've got to skip over to your channel to see if you have any further updates. p.s. you have a new subscriber
Not sure if you have time to read comments Shawn, I just want to add that the 'change of scales' in the GPS data is because of some incorrect data points. You can see two data points on all three plots at 13:46 as well as some other GPS charts. Maybe they'll get corrected or removed in the future to fix the scaling. Thanks for your videos!
Thanks for the update, I had a feeling you might be posting one around now. Looking at the defensive berms north of Grindavik, I wonder if the authorities have considered making a second berm inside (south) of the first in case lava flows over the existing berm and/or a fissure opens up just inside of it. Maybe too difficult with cracks in the ground there?
Thank you for sharing.. . 🙏 I am following with exciting cause My freinds and I have been in Katla Hotel in June and explored a lot in VIK TOWN - drove crase the bridge over river that now is destroyed by Smelt gracier ice.. and flooded. Any way ICELAND is always in my next destination next summer. Beautiful and quite different places of nature - Mother Earth to be explored. Hopte that people in this area will be safety,, Best Wishes from STOCKHOLM - SWEDEN 🌷🌷🌷🌷🌲🌲🌲🌲
IMO stated in this update (and the July 23rd update as well) that scenario 1 (between Stora Skogafell and Sylingarfell) and scenario 2 (between Hagafell and Grindavik) are equal in likeliness of happening. They stopped favoring scenario 1 as the most likely to happen. 11:20 the EQ you point out in April (and compare them to the EQ happening now), you forget to mention these April quakes were with an eruption going on so I'm not so sure you can compare them? The closest to the current number of EQ without an ongoing eruption is the amount of quakes around May 21st/22nd, that was 7-8 days from eruption. The same expected time IMO gives for this moment.
Hi Shawn, I would like to add the same Google Earth place markers that we see in your Iceland videos. (Dec 18, Jan 14, Feb 8, Mar 16 & May 29 eruptions, lava fields, berms, hill names etc.) I wondered if you have a link that we can access to add the placemarkers to our own maps or if not, where you obtained the placemarks (I imagine you've made a few yourself.) As ever, thank you for your videos and updates. You are an asset to the Geology community.
Is there enough suspended sediment in the glacier outburst flow to significantly increase the density of the fluid impacting structures such as bridges, dikes and dams? I think that likely, but hell, I've only a BS in Geology. I also have experience mixing and delivering concrete, and that looks like the wash-down water sloshing around in a mixer. I bet that volcanic sediment could make some high-quality cement.
Thank you for working so hard for all the team members. My background is medicine but I’ve always had a love to learn more about our planet. It’s the only one we have and we need to know about the earth. Thank to Amanda Jo I think she has put Iceland volcanos on the world map with you also Shawn. Now’s my question when the ground is elevated by the Water or magna if a fissure opens up in another area and releases will the earth stay elevated will the underlying rock stay in their new form or return to pre magna state? Thanks again
Great content. Can I ask professor Willsey and/or this community, is it safe to travel to Iceland in the next 10 days? Planning to arrive 8/10 - first timer! Would appreciate your response.
Was in Iceland and got turned around due to flood. Pretty interesting stuff. Poor sheep! They are slightly suicidal though as they like to run out on the road!
I think it’s interesting how each earth quack and eruption modifies the topography and ground composition such that the next eruption location is influenced by it the changes. One would think that the pressure would always vent through the weakest point. Wouldn’t it be great if some day they can install a pressure relief system into the magma layer - maybe during an eruption, that would offer a path for magma without resorting to the horrific explosions that have caused such devastation.
this Grindavik volcano busts out gigantic fissures. In the time before humans made Iceland their home, this volcanic vent was spreading lava halfway across the peninsula.
My hunch is the eruption will occur while I am on vacation for 2 weeks. 😅 that’s a joke. Something always happens while we are on vacation, right? Thanks for showing us the new Met Office maps, Shawn!
Curious on the difference between met office staing 7-10 days while others expect it to happen in weeks, If only you were to divulge when you will fly to Iceland with your lava fountain repair kit/tools, then we could accuretely predict when you would fix it so lava would flow again 🙂
Note they said "increased likelihood" in 7-10 days, not that it's the most likely outcome. Probably the intended meaning is 'very unlikely before 7 days' but 'fair risk starting after 7 days (into the next few weeks).'
There is no link to the map you can change settings on, one of the links don't work, all you get is a black screen. I was hoping to explore these links. Bummer they don't work. Still a good update.
Hmm, is there any type of comparison of Katla flooding in proportioning some of the ice age floods of the past ice age floods of The NW States in America? Maybe, not? Just a thought. Thank you Shawn!
13:41 ...but they have recalibrated the axes... No, THEY haven't. These plots use autoscaling, i.e. the ordinate is automatically scaled to its min and max values. The two outliers around June 10 cause this problem. So, unless they manually remove the outliers this problem will persist until early September.

Much relieved, keeping fingers crossed on that one.

Very professional explanation of this Icelandic saga. We always enjoy your discussion, you truly share your talents freely. Thank you.
Thank you Bruce. Graphing the data helps see the picture well.

Right on Shawn . Looks like it's showtime. Prayers for the people. Thank you🌋
Thanks for this update Shawn. The next ‘event’ certainly seems imminent. The new graphic you included is great.
Thanks for the update Prof Willsey.
I’m headed there tonight! Great timing
Thanks for the update! After watching the reports on the previous eruption, I've been a regular watcher, and catch each new video as it comes out. Looking forward to the updates on this next eruption.
Lovely update. Like the new map they have - seems they’re watching you channel with your Google Earth map and have taken some ideas from it. 😊
Thanks Prof, a great update. I'm waiting with bated breath for the next event
Thank you Shawn....the new graphics look interesting as we ramp up for the next episode! Thanks for your time and to Amanda Jo for her input.
Good update as always and thanks for the link to the new map
Thanks also for your coverage of the Karla flood.
Thank you for bringing this information to us. Best wishes and hopes for those in the path of the possible eruption 🌋 🙏🏼
Thanks Shawn for the update. Very interesting. Hope you had a good time on your rafting trip.
Thank you for your interesting and understandable updates!

Love listening to your reports. You explain everything without overly repeating yourself as much as many people do.
Thank you for your interesting update. I always look forward to watching them. 😊
Thanks Shawn, Amanda Jo, and Bruce Garner for this informative update.
Thanks for another update on Svartsengi and Katla situations.
Thank you for this update. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Thankyou for all of your hard work.
Thanks for the update Professor Willsey! ❤
Great analyse as always. Thank you Shawn.
Awesome! Love your channel! 💯
Thanks for the update with lots of new data.

Great update as always
As always...wonderful. thank you.❤
Thanks for sharing Shawn. The next couple of days has harsh weather forecasted with wind gusts that can offset the GPS measurements
Thank you Shawn 😊 great update fascinating information 👍 😊
Thanks Shawn, informative as usual. I am slowly learning...getting old so takes longer. AmandaJo, hope you are settling in to your new home. X:-)
Thank you. I am quite settled now. Missing Grindavík, of course, but our new home is cozy and full of love and happiness.

Hello from Waverly TN USA
I was lucky to catch the last eruption on the web cam, at the same time as watching the earthquake data. It was awesome 😎
Great summary, thank you! 👍

Yay for an update!
Great update. Only 2 weeks till I head up there so very excited about the possibility of seeing an eruption....hopefully just not Katla!
I absolutely love your work Shawn! Are you able to pass on the KML file you're using for Iceland? Thanks in advance!
Thank you Shawn ✌🏻
Many thanks!
We were just in Iceland. Stopped in Reykjavik, Grundarfjordur and Akureyri
Thank you.

Gilfi reported that one scientist reported a small under ice eruption occurred. High and low frequent waves. Sorry I can't recall the name
Katla
@terribrown7587 I think it was Prof. Páll Einarsson who said this...

Wow Katla !
Is it true that when Ejafjallajukhull erupts, which it did some years ago, Katla is known to follow?
With Bruce's graph, what is the y axis?
