    Major thing is maintenance.
    A robot have more moving parts then a tank.
    Therefore why dont build a rocket thrusting jump tank then a robot/mecha?
    This is the reason why we have no half tracks in services in any millitary on the world.
    Yeah is cool and you have the combined power of a tank and a truck but also the problems of both in term of rapairing this thing.
    If a tank tracks are procken you repair it with the parts you need.
    If a tire is flat on your jeep you change it no mater how many are flat just use more tire for replacement.
    If you half tracks have a missing tire AND tracks... oh boy you need 2 totely diverent spareparts to fix.
    Now imagen this with a walking robot... have fun chainging the right opper leg by removing the downer leg and find out you try to repace it with a left downer leg thats dont fit.

    • @jjc5475
      @jjc5475 7 років тому +1

      there are more reasons not to use half-tracks do.. and they where still used by the IDF for a long time. it could be a problem do.. but i'm not sure if it weights up to the pro's of for example an perfect atlas robot.

    • @HungryHunter
      @HungryHunter 7 років тому +1

      but then still... why build a roaddystory mech if you mount the weapon on tanks or trains?

    • @jjc5475
      @jjc5475 7 років тому +7

      HungryHunter trains aren't used anymore for warfare, because you can't really move them, a mech could even climb trough mountains, go where tanks can't go. but i think real world mechs will look a lot different than their fictional counterparts do..

    • @jjc5475
      @jjc5475 7 років тому +2

      HungryHunter probably a lot smaller, without a pilot, and with four legs, since that is way easily implemented and more stable.

    • @jjc5475
      @jjc5475 7 років тому +2

      HungryHunter and you have to make them so that they can be transported with a plane or truck, because a walking vehicle isn't going to move thousands of kilometers.

    I think another design could do pretty much everything a Titan could do but better, but the key is versatility. The human is a very unspecialised design capable of using a huge variety of tools, and a Titan, especially a Vanguard class, is built around that versatility.

    This was 4 years ago but since the Titans use an advance ai couldn't we make a similar self learning ai that can balance itself and take in environmental information one more thing couldn't we program the Titans grip based on what it's grabbing and the situation because IV seen tech that could do something like that.

    This is much more possible than people think. The ai system? Absolutely not, but he even said they have made a robot that gets input and gives feedback using pressure sensors to a human user in an exoskeleton. Can you imagine the capabilities that could have in construction? The danger presented by a crane alone, it uses sometimes 5-6 people to steady whatever item is lifted, when a titan could just pick it up. Titan technology is waaaaay too far off to be used in combat, but a titan could be an amazing tool in many different applications if we stop trying to automate it and build a mechanical one first.

      lots of opinions, my opinion is an four legged small remote controlled mech, not larger than a car and with the ability to be easily transported. but i think the way darpa is going is more usable, just make humanoid robots , copies of us. and you can slowly replace real soldiers and not having to change any weapons or vehicles/gear

      Non-lethal sleep darts
      anti-personel mini machine guns (recoil at perfect CoM to maintain balance)
      Anti armor/bunker buster bomb kamikaze drones
      intel/camera/jamming
      etc.
      possibly running on onboard super miniaturized plutonium reactors for extended flights, (stored in radiation containment pods of course).

    • @rodrigopaim82

      Something like the way of current tanks. Tracks to move around and pass over obstacles, a big gun in the top, some side guns too,heavy armor all around to protect against enemy fire... the main design cant get anything better than this, really.
      We only need to increase combat awareness, find materials both lighter and more resistant, smarter and better guns, and we are done.
      Humanoid robots could be extremely useful as support to the infantry. Going first checking if there is enemies or mines/traps, carrying tons of supply, more than a human could possibly carry.... if cheap enough, make them the standard infantry. It would be useful, since they could use or tools and enter our buildings.
      But if you want a big fucking gun, just put it on tracks and call it a tank.

      I think if you see the robots as disposable, a helicopter drone. If not, probably just an automated tank really. Legs are just too slow, so they are only advantagious in very difficult terrain. And even then, legs would also be harder to protect, and harder to repair, in all other scenarios.

    so ironic with the name Atlas, but one thing about mech is that its always easier to develop machines to adapt to us than we develop ourselves to adapt to machines don't forget that, the concept of mech is to extend our capability using machines, not the other way around, it may sounds impractical to have real life mech but its only because we are too confident that we can control all our inventions with ease and i do totally agree with that robot with emotion thing might be a bit dangerous, but its only maybe, or maybe its not so dangerous we might never know before we test and experience all these for ourselves, so lets not judge to strictly before we see the result

    If you ever do a topic like this again could you maybe give one or two examples on what other forms of robots would do better and in what situations? I feel another reason we're eager to make robots in our image is because we struggle to imagine anything better seeing as our bodies work fine. But since our form is so flawed for robots atm it would be cool to see what other forms are more practical.

    Two legs is ridiculously unstable. Tell me, would you rather sit on a chair with 2 legs, or 4?
    But here's the thing, a three legged robot would be the best. A 3 legged stool never wobbles. Go ahead, find a three legged stool, buy it and use it every day for the next few years, it will never wobble.
    Buy a 4 legged one, after some wearing on one of the legs, it will wobble and do that backsy forwardsy thing.
    Robots should be made with 3 legs. Problem is, how maneuverable could we make them? We don't have 3 legged animals to compare them to.
    Plus a gyroscope doesn't hurt. Why wouldn't a robot have one? It might need to have it recalibrated if it's going to be walking a long distance or else it will start to go perpendicular to the Earth, but it'll be fine.
    Hands? Just put in pressure sensors, give it a way to sense which pressures are bad.
    3 Legged Humanoid-like robots would be efficient.

    • @warriormes6012
      @warriormes6012 6 років тому

      Evil Paragon 2 NO three legs is an awful idea. Three legs combines joth disadvantages from 2 legged and 4 legged designs without the benefits of either.
      Your system would be unstable, because to move you would need to lift one of the legs. At the same time you lose the possibility of human-like sprinting becquse the extra leg gets in the way.

  • @spamhere1123
    @spamhere1123 7 років тому +11

    Another big problem about making a big walking robot to fight stuff is that it's a massive target with a ton of weak points. Obviously in game, this isn't played out for gameplay reasons readily apparent, but in reality, every joint that thing has would be extremely vulnerable, and the armor you'd have to put on it to keep it from being a sitting (or standing) duck would make it so heavy as to be completely immobile. Look at BT: many of his leg and arm joints have exposed pistons for moving his limbs. Those are super vulnerable and would be easily broken/disabled possibly even with small arms fire alone. Dedicated AT could easily destroy them.
    But with something like a tank, you can have 80 tons of machinery with quite a few tons of armor on a relatively small target low to the ground and still be able to move upwards of 40 mph with fewer points open to immediately disabling enemy fire. Also, being low to the ground and heavily sloped (check out tank designs like the M1 Abrams or the Challenger series) means that, ideally, AT fire is deflected rather than just absorbed head-on. A Titan, on the other hand, would be forced to eat all the energy from an AT weapon hit.
    Bottom line is, big robots are just plain ol' impractical, even if we get them to work exactly like in Titanfall.

      spamhere1123 the wiring and joints could be made out of something really strong while still giving a lot of mobility. The things titans excell at is mobility and the ability to do complex movements and take cover like humans peharps they would be at a disadvantage in the open but a area or a spawling city with a lot of cover could help them

      spamhere1123 are u sure about that? Looking at the Titans closely, all of their real life weak points seems to be well protected(except Ronin and Northstar) but looking at the games weak points, they are actually believable. All Titans have a critical point which is the "face" of the Titan. Its a hatch pilots would enter. It is also where I believe camera systems a placed. And it can't be too heavy as it won't budge when it goes outwards

    • @warriormes6012

    As far as why make the machine's humanoid and bipedal? Simple versatility, making it not crush everything it holds would require sensors on the inside of the palm and fingers for textile feedback to the machine's brain so it knows "Ok this will brake if any more pressure is applied" things like that. Also I would limit it's A.I to basic motor functions and combat capabilities, not giving it the ability to learn except withing those perimeters...so it doesn't go skynet on you making the pilot the essential brains behind the brawns of the machine.

    I just want to point out something cool about human hands this video reminds me of. our hands are so complicated that the movement of our hands is preprogrammed by the brain. this program limits how you can move your fingers. this is why you can move one finger without effect the others. all skills related to the use of your hands are just programs related to /build on top of the base rules. this is why you can forget your name but still play the piano. the wiring of nerves and the programmed hand movements are still there and you can run the program even if you don't remember you can do so.
    the programing complexity of hands is why life-like robots hands are not a thing yet. you would have to wire and program everything a human hand can do into a robot and make the hand able to change programs fast and flowed from any point in another movement.
    I read a paper on this once something about neuroscience and human memory. it talked about how the movement of the hands is limited by per programmed base movements that the brain modifies over time.

    > Hands: This technology already exists, and giving this to a Titan instead of a human could be much easier to not squish pilots ( ua-cam.com/video/F_brnKz_2tI/v-deo.html )

    i reckon that if you add a gyro scope in the titan maybe it can react to it falling or the wrong way up? also when the pilot is in the titan the human can react to falling over so....maybe?

    that titan or huge robot will be much more applicable for a rescue team. so the idea is make a room inside titan but contolled by remote-controll and go to disaster area, safe ppl, then get out. That or to fight humongous kaiju. if they exist....

    Give the robots some sensors or thermal plates to detect its surroundings. To know when the grip is too much, maybe give them pressure plates on their palms and feet, and maybe the whole body. For the balance, the gyro can be applied. Add a nice AI and ....hope that it works....hopefully.....

    Could we build mechs like in Titan fall? Hell no. And if we do it's gonna be in the distant future because the prototype machines we have nowadays struggle at doing rudimentary things by themselves. With that being said the hardware is gonna be minute. But I think the software are far more promising.

    • @josephmccafferty4172
      @josephmccafferty4172 6 років тому +1

      Fabian Taveras If we were going to use Machines that we could go into and "run around", I would think that it would be four legs with maybe arms, but probably just a tank that can climb, and looks like an animal, just for intimidation.

    I still dont get why its so hard to make a robot hand. Im not a scientist so Im most likely to miss some impordent facts.
    But I can see 2 ways to do that, which in theory would work. (Yes bad English Deal with it)
    1. Give the robot information about the object it's supose to touch. If a robot should hold a glass, it then just need to know how much pressure the glass can take before shattering. with that knowledge the robot should be able to calculate how much force it should use when closeing the hand.
    2. Let the robot figure out how much pressure it need to hold the glass. Tell the robot to close it's hand around the glass, when it come in contact with the glass, the robot shall stop aplying presure and then lift its arm to see if its grip is good enough.
    if the glass gets lifted the robot have succseeded. if not the robot then shall do the same thing again but put perhaps 5% more presure on the glass try lifting it agian and keep repeating this prosses until it succseeds.

  • @ProlificPianist
    @ProlificPianist 7 років тому +1

    Like a Titan in Titanfall? No. The weight would be far too much for it to handle, let alone balance. It would completely collapse under it's own weight unless you built it barebones, but then there would be little power behind it and it would break too easily. Then you have maintenance. Replicating a human body and psychology for it to handle similar tasks is difficult enough, but replacing said parts for cheap and little labor is not going to happen. Try debugging the AI/OS that is responsible for controlling everything when it starts acting up. NTY! What about lubrication for the moving parts? That thing is bound to have a LOT of problems with heat and friction as well as foreign contaminants. Building a fully sized, functional robot like a Gundam/Titan is an impossibility in physics. Not to say there aren't other routes, but that one in particular is pure fiction.

    • @ProlificPianist
      @ProlificPianist 6 років тому +1

      No, I mean it's not possible to do a full metal humanoid tank of that size or bigger without it actually collapsing in on itself. If it were to get that big, you'd need extremely heavy "legs" to support the weight on top and hold balance, but having full metal would automatically be too much weight for it hold unless it's completely made out of aluminium, but with such a weak metal that defeats the point of the "mech". That's why you don't see anything on land bigger than a house, because it's too much weight in our degree of gravity. There are other ways to go about it, but that involves scrapping the metal gundam/titan concept. I'm sure we'll see giant humanoid "tanks" but not at all like this.
