If you place a wooden peg in one of the corners, you can rotate your project piece 1/4 turn and set it against the peg, creating even more resistance and tightening the rope much more. Great stuff, as usual Dave.

That's great. I've been in need of a shave horse for quite some time but had neither space nor lumber to build one. This seems like a fast and easy alternative - at least for the beginner. I love it.

Dave, I think this has been one of my most used videos. I made a vise that I use here in Japan and I made one to use when I was back home in Ohio. I've recommended this video several times on the Morakniv Fans Facebook page. It is indispensable for carving and at the very least gets your hands & fingers out of harms way!

The great thing about a lap vice, especially if you are teaching kids to carve, is that you can use your tools with your off hand out of the path of travel of the blade greatly reducing the likelihood of cuts/accidents.
I have taught people to carve spoons and usually spend at least 20% of the instruction time at the start talking about how not to hold the spoon in ways that leave your off hand exposed to slips of the blade and nasty cuts!
    Thanks for another great video!

As soon as the camera changed so that I saw the plank and the rope my mind figured it out in a couple of seconds before you explained it and I can't believe I hadn't thought of that with all of the hobby wood carving that I've done. Thanks a ton, Dave!

If you can get surgical tube at the hardware store it'll make it hold a little better.
Probably not worth buying an entire package but it's not like it isn't good for slingshots, compression dressing (do your own research on that one), or other projects, you could make your own clamps with it and whatnot. Very versatile material.
