Remember: A Tsunami won’t look like what it is in the movies. It is a plain wave and the water will recede back to build it up.

@@qepdestehombre when you look at it from in the ocean it can look like a plain or abnormally large wave until it hits the shallows. much like a rogue wave.
So not a plain wave ...a normal wave moves the very very top of the .01% of the water .....tsunami is the entire ocean mass moving trillions of tons of water...it doesn't recede back to build up it recedes back in the troth of the wave being sucked in so as the water in front of the wavetroff is sucked I. The entire body of water in front if it is sucked into the wave....it builds up close to the coast because it's shallower but the amount if water is enormous so instead of building up like a Hollywood movie it becomes super long and miles of water in 1 wave ....1st wave is rarely the biggest as at ground zero the water displacement comes back and fills in the ocean and when it gills it pops I call it and a bigger wave then comes but honestly it might even be the 3rd wave that is the biggest with everyone after that usually starting to diminish...it's a seri3s event not just 1 wave ..... miles long and miles apart. Also one of the biggest mistakes people make is after the 1st wave they try and escape to early of May have to but the. 2nd 3rd 4th wave is approaching .... remember psa is for accurate information ...even in Deep water it's super small compared to when by coast but you can definetly tell something really really really weird just happened underneath you
This area is turned away from the direct onslaught of the wave. This area faces mostly south. So the wave we see is a "wrap around" wave, which bends around a peninsula. Also, this area is about 200 miles to the south of where the wave was worst. Even still, it is a massive surge of water!

The wave breaker barrier was barely able to stop the tsunami surge. Luckily, the one that hit Rioka seemed to be rather moderate in size so the damage on the fishing port and town was quite minimal.
The first little waves that overtopped it wasn't the real Tsunami. The video ended before the big waves hit. All that was destroyed by the real tsunami.

Well let me tell u something and i sure hope u listen well..
U aint seen nothing on fire works, until u been to the ocean / beach. Doesnt even matter witch one. People massive, massive cars full of people. Some coming from 45 minutes away others were talking like 20 hour drive. People by there fire works n take to the beach to blow them up. It honestly is like nothing u have ever experienced. U seriously really cant cause, its much more amazing then u wood ever guess it to be...
Went the first time when i was 15, when my antie rosie took me camping in Ocean Shores, Washington. We decided then n there. We would never celebrate the 4th anywhere else. Im 36 now n we have never missed one year. Its turned into a great family tradition. Anyone that goes is truly mesmerized n it really is amazing. I hope for u to go n experience this. I dont know u but not in a creepy way but i kinda want to track u down n drag u to the ocean! Warm thoughts i send ur way n hope u get to one day see it smell it. Hear it. N walk on it but NO SWIMMING, THOUGH RIP TIDES ARE VERY DANGEROUS HERE..

It's crazy to think about how this is just the way things go every once in a while there's a tsunami. If there was one here in the states people wouldn't take it seriously.
There's going to be one in the states, probably within the next few decades and it'll be bigger than this one. The Cascadia Subduction Zone is nearly identical to the Sunda Straits fault that caused the boxing day tsunami that killed 250k people in 2004. And the Pacific Northwest is not even remotely as prepared for a megathrust earthquake followed by a massive tsunami as Japan is. But they get an 8.7-9.2 megathrust earthquake every 244 years on average going back the past 10k years. Last one was a 9.0 in January 1700. They're overdue already by about 90 years
@@granddaddykaddy1788 Pacific NW isn't nearly as densely populated as Japan or Indonesia but yeah. I've been watching it since late 70's when I read about it in HS class. Scariest part (to me) is that it'll probably either trigger or be triggered by the San Andreas fault. NOT a good time 😖

@@jeffatkinson3288 the other point that needs to be made if we are comparing what it will look like in Pacific northwest vs Japan or Indonesia are both the Canadian and US population's behaviour in the immediate aftermath. I remember during the massive power outage in the early 00s in Ontario, Quebec and North eastern states, the poorer the neighbourhood the frequency of drivers not treating all intersections a as a four way stop increases dramatically. We fight over parking spots during black Friday and boxing day sales - I can only imagine what will happen when we experience a disaster of this scale. I definitely will want to own a gun at that time.
Tsunamis are taken VERY seriously in California! During Easter break in 1964 I was at the beach in SoCal when we were forced to evacuate and get away from the coast, following the Alaska quake on Good Friday. There are tsunami evacuation routes and posted signs all along the coast, and there are offshore sensors in the Pacific. It's true we're nowhere near Japan-level preparedness, but after what we saw of the Indian Ocean and Japan tsunamis, I think people will take it more seriously.
Watching the surge approach was creepy and fascinating. One of the few videos I've seen where the seawall wasn't totally overwhelmed.
I haven't ever seen this & I still watch, repeatedly, all the other video documented tsunami of Japan & Boxing day.....plus anything else available.

Those sailors who decided to navigate to the open water did the right thing. Probably saved their ship and lives.
A lot didn't make it though. I have quite a few that tried but the engines were not strong enough to get out to see.

ships should have gone out, taking a lot of people with them. They are marine people I never understood seeing
those big ships in harbour, being toyed around, Really so crazy, they are made to swim in rough sea! Fishermen in
Thailand 2004 made the experience. Pity the japanese did not learn that lesson.
The one boat that was leaving as the waves breached, he was still there after everything calmed down. Imagine being in that boat, you look to your left and you just see this massive wave breaching the rocks. Even the dogs are stressed as hell!
Coastal roads really are one of the most practical urban planning methods humanity ever concieved...

This earthquake & its tsunami were so destructive for Japan. If the country's early warning systems weren't so efficient, the loss of life would probably have been as great as the 2004 Indian Ocean quake & tsunami. With over twice as much water on the surface of the planet as land, water has the potential to overwhelm coastlines, river systems, & inland seas & lakes any time, anywhere. If the waters pull away from the shore, or the ground trembles & a rumble is heard in the river valley, don't hesitate. Get to higher ground ASAP. Whether a tsunami or flood happens or not, at least people will still be alive. Better safe than sorry - or dead.
Japan deal with tsunami since the acient time so people know better than others countries . No wonder why their traditional painting always got something to do with big waves and stuff.

It's fascinating how loud it is.
The sound of the dog whining, scared, and anxious from what is happening adds to the creepy viewing of tsunami filling the port.
Those people that were on boats and tried to race the first wave, then shot out of there for the second have nerves of steel. I can’t imagine the fear, but I understand if that boat is your lively hood, but if not, that is plain crazy. I hope they made it out.
In the lower left of the image at about 17:02 there is a truck evacuating the area. Whoever is driving had some wet road to cover. How terrifying that must have been sitting there watching that much water coming at you... Looks like they may have survived.
There are some people walking away around the same time. I thought it might just be something the water was pushing until I saw them change direction and then start running.Look directly above the eleven in the date and keep watching.
Despite having happened more than ten years ago, it is still impressive to see!
I usually pray before i leave for work in the morning. you never know when the day, the last day will come. I remember this day. I was staying at my aunts place and woke up in the middle of the night. dont remember exactly what time it was, but on my computer i chimed onto japanese news broadcast live. and they mentioned about a major earthquake, but the chopper live was filming the oncoming tsunami waives, the first making their way to japans coastal shores. i had no idea what i was about to witness, and even then, to think of what would befall so many. looking here the day was so nice, and yet it would end exactly the opposite of how it began.
The most impressive thing witnessing in my life are Tsunamis. Must have been jaw dropping and frightening seeing it live .

what dangerous about a tsunami is that its so fast and sudden
The water never receded first, the wave was not at all high or powerful. This was a baby tsunami. We like the big ones where you can get video of bodies flailing and disappearing in the torrent. It is not a notable tsunami unless you have corpses floating in the aftermath.
What can't see on most videos is just how high the waves are most are 60 feet plus some up to 90 feet high. There is one video someone took he was at sea level you can see the wave before it broke looking off the beach see just how high it was as it fills the lens.

yes 1m³ = 1 Ton - just a drop in the ocean, but would break all our bones
It's horrible hearing the people laughing, probably not knowing how much devastation the tsunami had caused further along the coast.
People cope in different ways when scared. Laughing can be a way to counter the panic. Stop judging them as if they are just jerks. You were not there and have no right to say that.
Very strange waterflow. The wave is moving right to left parallel to the coast although slightly toward it. Then, as it approaches the shore the wave starts to flow left to right. No major wave makes landfall. The topography of this place must have protected it since there was practically no damage as far as I can tell.
And it kept coming and coming..
A recent conclusion as why 130ft or 40M wave hit northern Japan is underwater landslides triggered by the long moderate quake that afternoon.
It was a 9 on the richter scale, not sure if that is moderate.
@@gailknight3128 A magnitude 9 earthquake is a lot more powerful than the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that destroyed San Francisco in 1906.
The 1906 earthquake did not trigger a tsunami for the simple reason that the fault geometry prohibits that. The motion on the San Andreas fault is essentially horizontal, whereas the Sendai 2011, Alaskan 1964, Sumatra 2004 / 5, Chile 1960, 2010, 2011 etc; all had a vertical component measured in 10's of metres. Several areas in Alaska, Chile submerged or rose about 20 metres from the pre-earthquake datums.

force this tsunami demonstrated.
@@juttaweise I can assure you that there is absolutely no 'Apparently,' about it. The coast sank because prior to the earthquake, it was being pushed upwards, due to the processes involved in the subduction zone.

If you look at the beach between 9:25 and 11:15 you can very clearly see the water line receeding by a lot within minutes.
Shout out to japanese engineers tho that wall held surprisingly long
Remember the guy who saved hundreds of lives? He saw the water retract 42:33 before the wave got on. So he evacuated a whole beach.
Crazy to think about I was tripping on mushrooms on the beach in Florida the night this happened. I seen an insane storm over the ocean while tripping. Still gives me chills the feelings I had and thoughts that crossed my mind. I wish I could explain in words

I thought I'd watched all I could on the tsunami of Japans, March 11th 2011, but I've not seen this.
I am both mesmerized & terrified by the events of that day & the boxing day tsunami of Indian ocean et al.

I still can't stop thinking what this would have been like at a max tide, this was low tide during a good minus tide, had it been high tide and a solid plus tide? fukushima would have been completely submerged the damage would have been twice as bad.. had this beena high plus tide sea water would have breached all the seawalls and made it over the second sea wall and inner town by 20-30ft.. RIP to all those lost, we still think of you..
The wave barrier very very helpful to reduce tsunami breaks .... maybe every city sides the sea in japan should have this wave barrier .. so effective for wave breaker

This has to be the least hardest hit part of Japan! This wasn't a fraction of what I saw in other videos! This had people laughing in the back. The whimpering dog in the back was the worst part!
