Hi, I'm a service technician for home medical equipment. A hospital bed with an air mattress and a wheelchair shouldn't cost more than $2400 to buy outright. And if they have insurance, the cost would be even lower. While that hurts his boat fund, he's still got 20 grand if he buys everything outright. And I refuse to believe shelves, landscaping, and door paint costs 20k. He's just a prick.

And am I the only one who thinks that if a boat costs their entire savings, he shouldn't be getting one? You need insurance for it, maintenance, gas, a truck & trailer to tow it to and from the water, etc... If you've bought a car, you'll know that just acquiring the car itself is only half the battle.

That's a great point. Door paint + landscaping + shelves...maybe a couple grand? Is this supposed to be a relatable plot point, weighing the cost of someone's medical needs and a reasonable, relatively inexpensive quality-of-living set of improvements vs an extravagant, savings-draining, ongoing and completely unnecessary and selfish expense as something that a regular man struggles with (and should struggle with)?

Did the relationship just not improve at all? Did they respect the effort but decide they weren’t right for each other? Was it actually a terrible marriage that one side attempted to “fix” with this? It's not a heresy in the technical sense (i.e. there are no condemnations of the doctrine by an ecumenical council, nor has a splinter group formed as a result of the teaching), but it is routinely called a heresy even in Evangelical circles.
That's not to say that a teacher of the prosperity gospel can't be a heretic in the strict meaning of the term. The modalist heresy (which teaches that God consists of only one person who performs three roles, in contrast to the three-person monotheism of orthodox Nicene Christianity) is popular in some branches of Pentecostalism, for instance. Creflo Dollar has been called a heretic on both fronts.

No critical thinking, no logic, no helpful advice, just diet racism and parroting religious beliefs as if the bible in its current form was handed by Jesus himself to George Washington followed by the phrase "Christianity is the AMERICAN way."

However, it's clearly supposed to be working as a theological nod: a core tenant of many flavors of Christianity is that humans do not deserve God's love, but he is kind enough to love us anyway.
This isn't the same as "sometimes you won't feel loving every day, but it's still on you to act in a loving manner." That's good parenting advice, friendship advice, relationship advice...assuming those are overall healthy friendships and relationships.

these Upward Sparks I know what you mean. And try criticizing these movies for exactly that in evangelical circles and you’ll see a massive negative reaction.
To the point that I said I mostly liked a movie (it mostly explored faith and it’s impacts across a broad set of characters) but didn’t like its weirder elements (characters coming back from the dead) and got chewed out for it.

It's alarming how well this movie portrays the cycle of abuse without realizing it. The abuser abuses and goes too far which causes the victim to wise up and decide to leave. The abuser then freaks out because they're losing control of their victim, so they lovebomb (er, love dare?) the victim with fake, but grand, gestures of affection until the victim decides the abuser is sorry and really loves them after all and comes back.
All we're missing is Fireproof II where Kirk escalates and begins beating her when he discovers that he's still married to a human being and not an automaton, only to have *yet another* come-to-Jesus, and maybe a part III for good measure where she leaves him and he kills her in the first ten minutes of the film, only to be *finally* redeemed by a good, properly submissive Christian woman who marries him in prison and convinces some horrifying Republican governor to commute his sentence.

Man, I grew up in an evangelical home and I saw this movie growing up. My parents always told me that love was “doing what’s good for another person even when they don’t accept it.” And this movie reminds me of that attitude so much and how paternalistic and hurtful that definition of love is. I was taught growing up that love wasn’t what you felt but what you did for other people. Therefore, forcing yourself to do favors for someone you were “supposed to love” was the epitomy of love, a bond of mutual indebtedness.
As I get older, I’m learning that the bonds we have with others shouldnt be driven by guilt and duty but mutual understanding and empathy. But it’s been a lot of unlearning.
Also I think the reason they dont go into detail about Kirk Cameron’s porn habits is bc you’d have to share salacious details that might horrify born again moviegoers. Also you did not discuss the gem of a scene where Kirk Cameron destroys his computer with a baseball bat to purge himself of sin.
Anyway thanks for making this video and I’m sorry for this very long comment.

“doing what’s good for another person even when they don’t accept it” explains so much of the conservative christian mentality. Both the part about exhausting yourself by giving all your time and energy to a relationship that doesn't give you anything back, and the part about forcing your definition of "what good for another person" on them no matter how much they want you to stop.

Then christian stores and churches were peddling the companion devotional book so MUCH, and the advertising for Fireproof especially was EVERYWHERE. I got so fucking tired of watching bad marriage after bad marriage be "restored" through harmful books and ideologies like this. And rarely did those women ever find their way out. It's extremely depressing to see women's spiritual lights and personalities die after being conditioned to stay in a bad relationship because it's the good and godly thing to do.

As someone who grew up in the homeschool realm and spent high school and college in deeply fundamental circles, it was harder than I expected hear you confront the movie's mantra that love isn't a feeling but a decision and feelings aren't trustworthy. I"m here to tell you that sitting under that ideology during the impressionable teenaged years still deeply affects my ability to deal with and incorporate feelings into my decisions and daily life. I've been away from that ideology and community for a long time, so I was surprised at my immediately defensive reaction to your criticism of that idea, and then really sad at how many people continue to build their lives around ignoring their feelings and convincing themselves that love has nothing to do with feelings. It is a deeply influential and toxic ideology, and I'm glad you made this video. I definitely hope a fluke of the algorithm puts it in front of some eyeballs that might need it.

I think it is important to remember that both actions and feelings play a part in a healthy relationship, but they are separate and two distinguishable aspects. The fact that I love(feeling) my husband is what leads to me putting in the hard work to maintain a good relationship. But, I agree with you, telling people to ignore their feelings and whatnot is a horrible, horrible message. Our therapist puts a lot of emphasis on the fact that our feelings of love for each are clearly there and strong, and the force behind the work that we're putting into our relationship, but either feelings or actions without the other aren't going to bring about a healthy relationship. I kept looking for all these hateful, lost people I'd been hearing about and realize the version I was shown didn't exist. Likewise, these movies have people believing that every person claiming to be a Christian is unwaveringly and effortlessly good, emotionally intelligent and very seasoned in their walk with God. Still looking for those Christians...

I was forced to watch this movie multiple times as a kid, and I still can't get over how much this entire thing is infested with the idea of money. The Love Dare is an ACTUAL book you can buy. But it's even worse than that. The first time was made to watch this movie was as a family, the second was for a movie event. What is a movie event, you ask? The Kendrick Brothers sell movie events to churches and theaters. Basically, you watch the movie and take notes and discuss the film after viewing it. But in order to do these events, you have to buy a license. The license for this movie is $114 for a year. If Jesus knew about the Kendrick Brothers, he'd be in their church flipping the tables over.

@@cam4636 It's such a funny excuse because for one you can easily confirm that no such gate existed, we know what Jerusalem looked like at the time and no contemporary sources mention this. But also throughout the Bible Jesus always uses very clear metaphors and if he was referring to an actual physical location and not using symbolism he would have made that clear, or the character of Jesus in the Bible would. Also his attitude to rich people is very clear throughout and this is not the only example of him condemning him.
Also this is the kind of shit that medieval Christians got right, there are tons of texts from monks criticizing contemporary lords or bishops for being too rich and pointing to the Bible for their justification.
