How bad or good are Indian developers really?

May be you have had a discussion with your friends and colleagues about software development in India. Some might have a very bad impression about it. Because some have had bad experiences with low coding standards and poor communication skills.
But is this always the case? Let us have a look at it in this video.
When IBM came to India in around 1951 they saw that there are many engineering graduates. But there were not many job opportunities. IBM then decided to train them to be software engineers.
But the idea in the beginning was, that developers from India would do low level coding. Simple stuff, which was too expensive to be done in the United States.
For many years more and more software engineers were trained in India. And the idea remained that simple coding work would be done in South Asia. This notion was there till early of the year two thousand.
This is also why developers from India are not known for high quality software development. But instead for low level coding and maintenance work.
But this has changed since the year two thousand.
More and more IT companies in India are focusing on quality and less on quantity.
Nowadays you can find great developers in almost all areas of software development.
The feeling about coders from India is now changing slowly. In Europe and the USA they have understood that high quality software can be obtained from Indian IT engineers.
There is also more and more software which has its roots in India itself.
So what is the conclusion? Are developers from India bad or good?
There was a time when only low level code was required to be developed in Asia. This has changed. And therefore the skillset in India has increased during the last two decades.
Developers from India have understood the importance of high quality code and long term maintainable software solutions.
