  • It's not like I'm afraid of rain, or that I can't drive in a shower, but it is not fun. When it rains, you don't get to see those epic views, partly because it is cloudy and partly because your visor is covered with raindrops. But let's not complain.
I left the cosy village Montolieu, with around 800 inhabitants and 15 bookstores, practically two in every block, and headed for a town next to Cannes. You might ask why I didn't choose Cannes, and the answer is: I don't care about those famous places. When I walk along the beach, sitting at a street having a beer or just watching people around me, Fréjus works as good as Cannes, though many times cheaper and less fuzz.
This epic motorcycle adventure is about to come half way done, and I have still the main attractions to see and experience, driving over the Alps, possibly also drive along an Italian former military road, nowadays a gravel path more or less. That is the reason I have the BMW F700GS. Turning north from Nice, towards three possible passes over the Alps and thus close to the next overnight stay in San Bartolomeo, a very nice place to stay, with a really helpful hostess. Along with the snow disaster that I've experienced, some had been left over for the Alps also, and all the three passes were closed. I tried to find some detour that wasn't to far, even asked some road workers, but with no luck. I had to return after I had been driving for an hour, drive the highway along the coast, passing San Remo and Monaco, and then turn north towards Turin. Weather was good, but 600 km is a lot. When approaching San Bartolomeo, I still got really heavy rain during the last half an hour drive.
