personally id love to see any giant mixing desk be reviewed by you
something about the way you mix german into your English, and the calm nature of the reviews makes them perfect for casual watching

I did this with My SS24, many years ago with a Motu 24io. Well, turned out, the opamps in the Spirit is the low quality TL072. Everywhere! In Eq, preamp, bus driver, summing, pan circuits…. Super noisy and has distortion on zero crossings. So what I did, I modified only 8 channel, and replaced all TL072 with BB 32 high-end opamps in the path up to the buses, then changed the coupling circuits, replaced all elcos, mostly with film caps. Not so cheap 😂! After summing I recorded back the bus output to a mastering CD recorder. One of my best mix ever exported from box! Chhers!

Wow that sounds like a lot of work! I did a quick research and replacing a TL072 seems like you need very specific amps…but actually I never really tried to improve a device so I have a lot to learn! All the best, Tobi

@@tobitweaks just replace in one channel strip the TL072s with a 8p dip socket, then You can play with different opamps. OPA 2134 or 5532 . Just add a 0.1 uF caps on the power imputs. 2134 is a bit sensitive for oscillating in EQ configs…

@@tobitweaks also, the master section is where everything comes together - It's good to replace the components in this master, and the busses. this will improve the sound without modding every channel. Thanks for an interesting video. I had the Spirit 16 at one time, it's a great desk overall. Using the 8 buss with a 8in/out sound card is a good set up with these.

Another excellent Tobi Tweaks vid! In the day I did so much work on a Soundcraft (and before that a Mackie 32x8 as well)! The EQ is so musical on the spirit. I use a Tascam DM4800 these days for the best of in-line console mixing + digital sonic consistency.

Thank you for being on board! ;) Yes the Mackie 8 Bus is high on my list of consoles to test! Also very interesting that you use a digital board - I am planning to dive into digital mixing boards aswell but that is for the future! All the best, Tobi

@@tobitweaks - yeah, current problem is having enough inputs in the interface....I need an adat 8ch rack to make it work better. better yet a MOTU or UA interface with 16ch input and 48ch output.

I've got one one of these, in 24 channel. Improving the power supply helps with better sound, able to power more channels. PS is underpowered.

    Hey man, great video!
I just aquired the same console, had to do some work on it first but am now in the process of testing all channels. I noticed you run the same soundcard as mine being the RME digiface usb. Only difference is that i use a Ferrofish 16mx so i only am able to send out 16 mono tracks out of my daw (or 8 stereo ones).
How did you set everything up? I am really curious about the way you run it in your situation. Maybe i could learn a thing or two from you.
Really glad i stumbled upon your video. Nice!
    Cheers from Antwerp!

Hi! I think the way this was set up was they had 24 Channels going from the converters to the Monitor Ins as „DAW Returns“ while having Synths on the Line ins and their live room Mics connected to Mic In. Now they had 24 Channels going from the direct outs back to the RME to record. Finally they had the Masters and groups come in on the last 8 channels while they used the last 8 outputs for Speakers and additional things. So the speakers were not directly connected to the console. Hope that helps! All the best, Tobi

I've got a 16 channel Spirit Studio in a hybrid set up if you are interested in how i use mine. I've spent a lot of time working on chasing faults on it to and repairing it if any of that is useful to you too. I use it for live recording my band and for recording them on the studio too

Hey, i am experimenting with this board for the last year i upgraded power supply from 150w to 300w and it sounds better, i have 24 channel with stock cps150, then i noticed it sounds a lot better when i record to dat than any new interface, i tried apogee, audient, focusrite and it sounds like crap, then i went to dat and there it is, the specific 90s sound. I will try to use alesis blackface adats for the da converters, i am in the process of collecting them and it should sound better also. I am not completely satisfied with this board, i compared it with mackie 1604 original one and it sounded like 20% better than the Soundcraft and i also like that you can clip it, Soundcraft is not good when clipped it cramps it alot. Anyway thank you for this video so much :)

How would you say the Spirit Studio compares to the Zed 428?

    • @tobitweaks
      @tobitweaks  8 місяців тому

It has direct outs and returns on every cvannel so you have the option to use jack cables into an analogur to digital interface ADDA (analogue to digital, digial to analogue) Analogur to digital conversion when recording feom the desk to computer, and digital to analogue conversion when playing back from the computer into the mixer to mix recorded tracks.

I have a soundcraft series 500 which I’m fixing. Ex television so I’m having to deep dive all the modifications, output bus isn’t working yet, channels up to 23 are though but yeah, it’s not the standard model and has modules I’m trying to get my head around still. It sounds beautiful for what I’ve got working so far. It’s a 1973. One more thing, I also have a soundcraft 200b from the 80s. These two consoles sound nothing alike. The 200b is a good desk, but the series 500 literally pisses all over it. You can’t even compare them, the old one make’s the newer one sound like absolute shit.

Hmm, actually not a fan of the sound of this one compared to the others you've done. It definitely has a sound, but nothing I'd really want. It has that kind of 90s garage band "demo" sound.
I'd love to see you shootout a CAL modified Ghost, maybe even before and after mod. I have seen so much hype on these.
