- The Tarasque is a mythical creature of Provencal folklore. 🐢
In the heart of Provence, on the banks of the Rhône, resides an animal whose name has become synonymous with terror: the Tarasque. According to legend, the Tarasque is an amphibious dragon, with a turtle shell with multiple spikes, a lion's head with the face of a monstrous old man with yellow eyes, six large legs with sharp claws and a long scorpion's tail.
The story goes that the Tarasque hid in the river, from where it took the lives of all passers-by and swamped ships. 🐢
📖 Its history is linked to that of Sainte Marthe. Since her arrival in Provence, Marthe had performed numerous miracles. At the request of the locals, she went into the woods to find the Tarasque. She sprinkled it with holy water and showed it a cross. The monster immediately calmed down and remained quiet. Saint Martha then bound him with her belt and brought him to the villagers, who slaughtered her in revenge. But in memory of this event, the locals named their city Tarascon.
