But please don't throw them away. The overpriced Elgato device produces such poor-quality results that you'll end up wanting to do your conversions all over again, using better hardware that is capable of capturing the full 60 fps smoothness and quality that VHS and other analog videotapes are capable of. See the Oldskool PC video "How to convert VHS videotape to 60p digital video".
Thank you so much for this video and your channel! I just got a JVC VHS cam for 7 euros on a market and it is complete and taken care of so I am super happy. Which cable would you suggest for a Mac? I would love to still have the best quality as possible (I know it's VHS haha) Thank you x
i recomend setting the resolution to 960x720 and streching it so its 4:3 also if you want a smooth capture set it to 59.94 (for ntsc) or 50fps (for pal) and setting the deinterlace to either retro or yadif 2x
i dont reccomend the elgato capture card as there are weird rainbowy effects when the video is unstable which can happen a lot when recording on a camcorder
I noticed you have both the "Audio Input USB" and "Video Capture USB" sound both on at around the 8:30 mark in your vid. I digitized my first vid yesterday using OBS and I got dual unsynced audio on the recording. I then repeated the process with the video capture audio line muted and it turned out great. Wonder why you didn't have this issue with both turned on??? Also, I went through my settings following Tim Ford's channel's recommendations, and holy cow, he had me making all kinds of settings changes. Now I wonder if they were even necessary since you didn't do hardly any of them. Check it out and see what you think.
idk if you will still reply but i did all the steps and when i plugged in the wire there was no output, like my footage was playing but my mac wasnt playing anything, please help!!
Hi! Thanks for the video! there are parts of the video that are not colored when being recorded, it becomes black and white but the video being played in video cam is colored and in high quality. The quality of the sound is not too good also. Is it because of the cables or the quality really changes when being recorded?
I have a Panasonic digital palmcorder model PV-L780D and I am trying to figure out how to connect it to a digital converter, as it only has a phone and a/v out jack, both of which do not fit the digital converter that I have, which is an Easier CAP converter. The converter has a yellow, white and red connections, but none of them fit the ports in the palmcorder. Am I missing something? Any help is appreciated.
I download the latest OBS from the official site to MacBook Pro M1 chip. I use RCA connector to USB C cable. When I create the source, it has Integrated Webcam option only. I try to reinstall it and got the same answer. Why it is not identify other source type when connect. Ie, Sony CamRecoder.
I have the digitize cord alternative and when I connect my camcorder to my MacBook and record the clip the sounds should static and chopped do you know why that is ? Should I download obs and that will fix the issue ?
The downside to this method is that if your camcorder doesn't have a way to playback without the time stamp and screen info then the time stamp and screen settings info is going to show up on your capture. With my JVC there is no way to take the time stamp off when playing from the camcorder so I end up with that on my video capture. If anyone has any other methods around this please do share. Or if you know a brand of camcorder that takes vhs-c with playback settings that allow you to turn off that info please share
looks like the best solution is to use this capture device with a regular VCR and tape adapter. That way the time stamp/screen info doesn't show up@@KylerSteele
#Kyler if I have a vhs with composite output and i get a composite to hdmi adaptor, will the translation of the original vhs tape be better when digitizing?
Hi ! Thank you for this (very clear) video ! I don't think I have he cable you talked about to connect the battery charger directly to the camera. What is its name, so I can try and find a new one ? Also I have a Chromebook laptop, so is OBS studio compatible with it or do you have an idea of a similar software I can download ?
If my camera doesn't work, can I still transfer footage to the computer? Because when I open the camera I get a gray screen with black stripes. Can you please help me with some information?

It truly is the easiest method as I think most people are already familiar with OBS. Thank you so much.

perfect video. this is exactly everything i needed to know. you relayed this in the most efficient manner possible i believe. thank you.
Happy to help 💪🏼 thanks for watching

Works great but audio recorder through my Mac instead of through my vhs camera. How could I change this?
does anyone footage keep stopping while recording? Any solutions please??

I’m having the exact same problem… I’m considering getting the elgato to see if that makes a difference
Hmm not sure but if you are closing the camera screen when recording maybe it’s sending signal to the viewfinder which is usually in black and white?
The screen remains black for me, any way to fix this?

you need a 3.5mm jack with av cables on the other side
What if the blue screen doesn’t pop up?
Just got a camcorder, got all the required supplies. Does this still work?
imagine having vhs camera in 2021 I-
you’re so lucky!! Plus your videos are awesome as always!
@Bety Suhartini iya orang malay , tapi bagi saya mahal juga kok vhs nya hahahah

I’m looking on eBay for a vhs cam recorder and it dosent come with a display cable
You can get a cable on amazon

maybe you nedd the drivers
what camera do you have??
Thankyou for demonstration.
Ideal settings for pal recording to not have black bars at the side? I know pal is 25fps but not sure what the base canvas and output scale should be?
Not sure of this myself. But can always take it into edit software to crop!
it should be 960 by 720
YOU ARE MY HERO. THANK YOU SO SO MUCH OMG.
You are welcome!
This is literally THE BEST video out there, I’m so grateful! THANK YOU!
THANK YOUUU!!! this was so helpful!!

If the camcorder has an S-video output, isn't that the way to go instead of RCA components?
there really is no difference
I have many recordings from me as a baby on VHS. Thank you for this video - I might be able to save a copy of them 🖤 all the best to you.
Thanks !!! What are the file sizes you got for 1 hour of recording ?
They aren’t too big!

it cant read what mode, the camcorder is
Im having a problem,
After im done recorda and play my video it buffers non stop,
Any recomendations?
Might be a problem with the vhs if it’s from the camera
Everything worked when I was recording my hi8 video but I was able to pick up me breathing on the Mac book mic how do I remove that
Disable the computer microphone. You might see 2 audio sources when recording. You can clap to see which one is the computer audio, toggle that off
The image pops up briefly and the. Turns black.. how come? It’s driving me fuckin crazy omf 😭😭😭
Maybe an issue with the cord?
great video. you kind of talk like a text to speech software lol. anyways great video simple and easy.
Haha I'm trying to get better at it. Talking to the camera is not natural for most people definitely including myself

hi can i ask if it NEED to use your specific video capture or i can use a cheaper one or different brands ?
you can use cheaper 100%
Thanks for the help brother keep it up 🎬
I have a vhs c tape adapter and a vhs player. Would this set up work for that?
If you can connect your vhs to your computer with the usb it should work
Does this program allow me to cut and edit and put together multiple tapes to kinda make a movie or montage of different videos ?
No this is just for recording
i try doing this with my canon gl2 with my av to rca cable and all i see is static
Might be a bad cable. See if you can try a different cable or on a different device. Make sure you are playing the video on the camera
Thanks for this video. Other than the Elgato what capture device do you recommend.
I got another cord off Amazon for $20 that worked fine!

does every VHS camera have video and audio ports?
Most but not all!
The proper word is "digitize" and NOT "digitalize."
