He always sang this song at his concerts… the entire place would be rumbling with the noise - with EVERYONE singing along. He was America’s Queen (the band). Everyone knew every word to all of his music.. and sang along. He attracted all ages in his concerts in the late 80s, 90s and into the 2000s. He would schedule one concert in an area, and end up doing 3-4 bc they would sell out so quickly! Love him.. amazing songwriter, musician and entertainer. Thank-you for a wonderful memory!!!
And yet he is rarely mentioned with the top singer-songwriters of his day, such a Joni Mitchell, Carole King, James Taylor, John Denver, etc. Maybe his style of music was just too different and so he is overlooked
In concert, Neil Diamond stretches out the preaching section of the song, and to your point, the background vocals, and he raise up into a louder, larger crescendo with thousands of us fans singing it at the top of our lungs. And, he ends it with a long, drawn out---- AAAAHHHHH-AAAAHHHHH MEeeeeeeen! PS: I've seen this legend in concert dozens of times, and from start to finish I'm singing, weeping and dancing. My heart fills with joy.
If you grew up in the American south, boy can you identify with this song. There were so many rent revivals that happened on the edge of towns and cities. What a great portrayal of the scene that happened in all those tents!!!!
My favorite Neil Diamond song. I love the different textures, his ballading and belting, and the gospel singers. This is the complete Neil Diamond in one song.
Neil is an American icon. Love that man. Over all these decades, never a scandal. Such a beautiful, humble person. Praying the best for him in his retirement. "I Am, I Said" is so profound...His own personal story.
"Pack up the babies & grab the old ladies..." reminds me of my grandmother taking me to revivals at her "holy roller" church when I was little. Music, dancing, testifying, hours long....quite an experience here in the American South back in the day. "Holly Holy" is my favorite though. Very spiritual & beautiful. Neil will give you goosebumps on that one. Hope you react to it! Much love from Kentucky U.S. 💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙
Deborah, I'm curious if you've heard the version of Holly Holy and Brother Love from Neil's 1970 album "Gold: Live at the Troubadour". I think that album is Neil's best, whether "live" or studio, the versions of those two songs will certainly give you goosebumps. as will his version of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now."
Saw Neil in concert three times. black, white ,young and old everyone singing along we all knew the words to the songs. nothing but love for Neil. My favorite song of all time is "I am I said"
I heard Neil Diamond do this in concert as his closing number in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, decades ago. The whole Civic Arena was on its feet hands in the air! Neil Diamond absolutely brought the house down!
There's a great version on UA-cam of Neil Diamond's appearance on Johnny Cash's TV show around 1969-70. He and Johnny swap songs on their guitars, and then Neil does a great rendition of this song in which he tells the story of how he attended a revival meeting in the South, which inspired him to write the song, and does a dramatization of the preacher's sermon.
It's really superb bro, nothing like Niel diamonds songs, you got the feeling of good music, only very few people on earth appreciate it,am one 👍 and by the way bro thank very much for posting it, thank you very much 👍
In the deep south in America 1960's Young Jewish people began coming to Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, where ever they felt blacks were being suppressed and began working on their behalf. Neil was one of those Jewish youth and while they were traveling they stopped in a deep south small town. They were invited to a tent revival being held by a black evangelist who went by the name Brother Love. Neil, having been raised in Jewish Synagogue worship which was very ritualistic and orderly attended this tent revival and was quite take back by how the black people worship in this area. This song is based on that experience. Years later, he and Ralph Lauren shared a pew in the same Synagogue. You had pay for a pew so they shared the payment and sat together. A far cry from Brother Loves Salvation Show.
takes you back to what it was like in the southern states in the 20's or 30's. bible thumpers everywhere and some parts are still like that. especially florida - so many religious stations on the radio still to this day
Best gospel song ever from a good Jewish boy. LOL. He said he attended a tent revival meeting and felt something spiritually and it stirred him. When I was a kid, just 6 or 7 listening and singing along with this song when it was a hit, I sang the wrong lyrics for a while. I thought he was singing, "Pack up the babies and crabby old ladies," which... since I was 6 or 7 was me hearing the ladies shushing me and telling me off when I misbehaved. Then, I got older and heard the real lyrics. Haha... well... sometimes I still sing crabby old ladies... just for fun.
As a student, I was a record store helper and listened to the live album Hot August Night 1972 with the final song package Soolaimon/B.L.T.Salvation Show 9:36; of course bought or processed. This live version would be a MUST and highlight for you, full of energy and passion. Apparently there is now an extended edition of this concert. From this fantastic live album I had admiration and great respect for Neil Diamond. I wish him all the best in his old age!
Neil D' was at times called "the Jewish Elvis". My parents had some of his records, when I was a youth -but I kind of just remember his duet with Barbara Streisand, "you don't bring be flowers", in my memory of the 1970's (born in 1969).And seeing him in his shiny shirts, and the remake of "the Jazz Singer" Over time, I found how he was a songwriter at the Brill Building, wrote hits for The Monkeys,. and then went out on his own, and gave the world some incredible songs. Even, his modern work with Rick Rubin producing. Neil Diamond is cool, and deserved to get in the Rock Hall (even if he was schnockered that night, in giving his acceptance) "The Jewish Elvis" has not yet left the building!
Incredible version of Brother Love is on Neil Diamond's 1970 Live album "Gold" recorded at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. The album is Neil's first live album and in my opinion his best. It hit number 10 on the Billboard charts in 1970 and contains besides Brother Love, classics like Sweet Caroline (when it was still fairly new), Solitary Man, Holly Holy, Cherry Cherry, and Kentucky Woman, all performed in front of a small, intimate crowd.
Classic Neil Diamond from his early years. There are plenty of songs from that period that are worth catching. - Done too soon - Holly holy - I am I said. Crackling Rosie was the first time I heard him.
There's an old one he and Shirley Bassey play me live from BBC. They need to get a room for that one. It's brilliant. Shirley Bassey is her own rabbit hole it could take a century to cover. Try the theme to Goldfinger or Diamonds are Forever. Just to name a few.
One of my fav Neil songs. I'm not so sure it's so much a gospel song as it is a song about a gospel tent service. "Pack up the babies and grab the old ladies and everyone goes, everyone knows . . . ." Masterful lyric writing that doesn't get much better. Thx for the reaction.
Need to react to a live version.. everyone would "reach out, reach out". One of his closing numbers and he still sang it like he was on an energy high.
Especially down south......way back there were tent revivals now and then....I barely remember going to one....but what I do remember was, yes, it was hot, no ac, no fans.....just the heat and the preacher letting the fire and brimstone go. Usually an organ, tamberine, lots of singing too.
There's a really cool alternate version of this song were as he starts singing, "take my hand in yours" these bells start ringing, "walk with me this day" and the bells again. I like it. My first time watching your show and you picked a great song and artist. Thank you. Subscriber now too.
Dynamic Vocals and Music that does not exist today..... Music gone in the Past... Such a SHAME. This song gives me Strength! Neils GREATEST song and Presentation IMHO.
I do believe if Mozart & Beethoven could hear the African Trilogy, they would be impressed by the beauty, uniqueness & musicianship that went into that work.n
Here is one of the penultimate singer songwriters of modern music. A nice Jewish boy, but so many of his music is gospel influenced. Holly Holy, This Way Again, Be, and do many others.
Great that you're discovering and appreciating Neil's wide, wide range of work. I only ever has two of his LP's the 4-sided Live 'Hot August Night' and 'Serenade', and they've been replaces and played regularly over nearly 50 years. They covers such a range of styles and emotions, moving me seamlessly from mellow rumination to bopping wildly round the kitchen. You almost don't need any other music when you have so much on just TWO records. And yet, they're still just a subset of his work .... I'm still discovering superb new (to me) songs on his early albums that I was too young to be aware of at the time they came out .... To have THAT voice and SUCH songwriting skills THOSE looks (1978. BBC concert - swoon) make the man a unique phenomenon.
Misremembered: 1971 BBC concert, age 30. Here's Brother Love's ... at this great live performance: m.ua-cam.com/video/nhGMmmd9Ixs/v-deo.html Yes I did think he was gorgeous, but it's the music that's been important for 50 years. I bet he'll be one of the performers that will be listened to forever ....This music is classic, eternal ...
This my all time favorite song that Neil sings. I LOVE the trumpets in the background, and the piano is awesome! But I have to say, I have never heard a bad one. I LOVE his voice :)
Not sure if you read comments 4 months later bur he does a medley in the album Hot August Night from 1972,Brother Loves and Sulaimon that is really woth a reaction.
Not one of his best sellers but I dug it. My favorites by him Red Red Wine. Holly Holy. You got to Me, Cherry Cherry. Very very successful career. I believe he gave up touring. All things eventually come to an end.
Thanks Harri! This is my FAVOURITE song of Neil’s! LOVE,LOVE this! Your channel is fantastic! Peace and Blessings to you and your family from Australia.
I absolutely love watching your reactions. You were, of course, correct about the crescendo.... but it comes on the live performance, which Neil Diamond absolutely tears up. I feel like you were almost in church with the rest of us on this one, Harri. Nice reaction.
I saw him about 7 years ago. Great show. I passed on Jonny Cash, Warren Zevon & had tickets to Stevie Ray Vaughn (right before the crash) so I WAS NOT MISSING HIM. I am glad I did not.
There will never be another like Neil. He is one of a kind and has such a huge number of great songs. Thanks Craig.
You’re welcome!

Saw several times early 80s....some of the best I have seem which includes, Frank S, Tony B, Freddie M, Ronnie VZ

Neil is awesome!!

Neil Diamond is one of the best songwriters and singers of all time. Neils music is Classic and never goes out style. My favorite artist of my Life!!
My favorite Neil Diamond song. I love the different textures, his ballading and belting, and the gospel singers. This is the complete Neil Diamond in one song.

I beg to differ on the American Icon comment. I prefer to think of him as a World Icon

Summer tent revival and church camp too! Nothing like those hot and humid dusty days and nights in the Deep South getting religion
I used to think he was saying, “Pack up the babies and crabby old ladies.” 🤣

Exactly! That's a perfect description.🤗

Oh, that's hilarious! And now you've implanted that in my mind & it's what I'll hear in my head from now on.😳🤣

This man can paint a picture with his words like not many other artists.
I love the version of this from his live 'Hot August Night' album.
The best! So alive!
The best version of this song.
When he yelled Brothers!!! I almost jumped out of my skin!!!
I’ve always liked Neil Diamond, he’s a great songwriter and singer, deserves more recognition
Neil is so unique and talented. His music takes you everywhere. I have attended two concerts and both were wonderful.
One of his more unique songs, always liked it
He was my 3 or 4 cousin. I love all of his music but Br5other Love is all time favorite song!!!!
Had this 45 as a kid... knew all the words... and CRANKED it up on my little Hi-Fi!! 💙
One of our all time greatest songwriters and singers. I got to see him a couple of times in concert. I really enjoyed the shows.
OHMYGOSH!!!!!! This is one of my FAVORITE songs from Neil Diamond!! ❤❤❤❤
Hallelujah! Is right. A total celebration of life.

A wonderful ,well told tale, from an American legend

Forever In Bluejeans is another great one from Neil
I loved this one the first time I heard it and I crank it up every time. Try Brooklyn Roads.
I've never been to an old fashioned southern gospel tent revival...but this song makes me FEEL like I have!
I have. And it’s just like that 😂. I Love his voice and this song! One of my all time favs!
The live version from Hot August Night in 1972 brings it up a level. It's more what you were looking for Harri.
I list this as one of my all-time favorites in and beyond Neil Diamond's catalogue.
A masterpiece in song writing.
IMO one of Neil’s best that few have reacted to is “Solitary Man.”
One of Neil's best jams. Makes me feel good every time
Best gospel song ever from a good Jewish boy. LOL. He said he attended a tent revival meeting and felt something spiritually and it stirred him. Oh my gosh! I just said the same thing! It actually works either way but his lyrics are more positive.

You needed to do the live one from the Hot August Night album. Great stuff.
You have to listen to his ‘70’s live version-like Hot August Night. So much more feeling for the duration of the song. ❤
Hot August Night is timeless quality.
One of my favorites. Please check out Holly Holy. In my top 5.
One of my favorite Neil Diamond songs. Nice review, as always!
I've been waiting for you to react to this. My favorite Neil Diamond song.

This song made a great scene in one of my favorite comedy, "Lost & Found", with David Spade

Yes.

Such a poetic lyricist!
"When you'd almost bet you could hear yourself sweat..." I love that line!

“ every EAR is on him”

One of America’s finest singer songwriters
Made popular again with the movie Once upon a Time in Hollywood.
Feather in your cap Craig Aust. Grade A song from Neil Diamond.👍
Thanks!
Listento the cut from Love at the Greek....phenomenal!!

He describes an old tent style revival very accurately you can almost feel it even more remarkable when you consider he is Jewish.
The live version is pretty great too.
Neil said he wrote this song about gospel meeting he once saw.
Yes. He talks about this during an appearance on 'The Johnny Cash Show'. One of the best live performances of this song you will see.
I think this is one of his best songs. Thanks Craig and Harri.
You’re welcome!

Very moving story.
The live version from Hot August Night is stellar!
"Morningside" is one of my favorite Neil songs, along with "Brooklyn Roads".
Soooo good. Saw him live a couple of times. Outstanding energy.
Craig Aust, great choice! It’s been too long since I heard this song. It warms my heart to hear it now. Thanks for this. Great insights from Harri 🌺✌️
This is a great selection, Harri.
A Jewish man appreciating a old tent revival for what it was and the peace it brought to the followers.
I love this song 🎶♥️
I liked and subscribed but am hoping you will react to Neil Diamond and his best song, 'Holly Holy'. Don't disappoint me!
Brother Loves show~! .........

one of his best that is the Wrecking Crew on there. the late Hal Blaine on drums
Glen Campbell on guitar, as well.

Yes my favorite. Also onn 3 of his earlier albums.
Almost makes me not want to be agnostic..... almost.
Still a great song.
It's "Brother Love's," not "Brother's Love!" 🤣
“Reverend Blue Jeans” per Kevin James in King of Queens. A cool Reverend , he thought.
❤❤❤❤
What is funny he sings like he knows all about a revival but he is Jewish ! Lol ! I love him !❤
A good Jewish city boy singing about a country gospel revival.
the live version is better, cuz he explains how he came to write this song
listen to the live version on hot august night
