  • Here is Peter Allen on The Mike Douglas Show in 1975. The hosts for this episode are David Steinberg and Joey Heatherton. Peter talks about performing at The Bitter End and Reno Sweeney and how he likes working at cabarets because they are more personal and intimate.
It's interesting how he mentions that Chris Bell and himself were first presented as The Allen Brothers by Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show, when in reality, they were known as the Allen Brothers since their days on Australian Bandstand in the early 1960s. I wonder why he left that part out? Maybe he thought American audiences wouldn't know anything about Australian Bandstand.
Joey Heatherton then sings "I Honestly Love You" with Peter Allen accompanying her on the piano. Couldn't Peter have at least sang backup or some harmonies seeing that he had a microphone in front of him!?
"I Honestly Love You" was written by Peter Allen and Jeff Barry and is on Allen's 1974 Continental American album at: • Peter Allen "I Honestl... .
    Set List:
    Interview (0:00)
    I Honestly Love You (3:41)

Thank you for this one. Such happy memories! Where did the time go? "Dinah" was on at 3 & "Mike" was on at 4. The only dilemma I might hv had is if ABC' "The Four O'Clock Movie" was a "great" film... at that age " Planet of the Apes or "Earthquake",wld mk the cut.(lol)
AND HA, LOVE IT, David Steinberg was always filling in as host for almost every talk show. Too Much! I would love to hear Chris ( Bell?)/Allen current day (he must be near 78, as well),.reflecting on their career together. You know how I feel 💙 about Dame! ONJ., but "not so much" re: her recorded voocals or arrangement on the single. It pales to her mature rlive reading of it. I promise, you wld hv been happily surprised.
But back then, I still think Peter sang it so well on the Aussie "This is Your Life". And now to the point, even though I don't love Olivia's '74 reading, I cannot, & will not listen to "Vegas sex bomb" Joey, " Be A Perfect Sleeper" Heatherton, so I will FFWD thru her singing. It will be the first time I've skipped any part of your videos 😃. Thanks so much again & I look forward to your Feb.10 surprise 💙 ! You have a treasure trove & are truly so generous.

I wonder about what happened to Chris Bell too. He's kind of a mysterious figure that no one seems to know too much about. Maybe he likes to keep it that way:) All I know is that he became a pilot and moved to either Oregon or California and was in a band called Boomerang in the 70s. He also made a rare appearance on the Peter Allen "This is Your Life" episode in 1977. If Chris, himself, or someone who knows Chris is reading this message, please let us know what you/he has been up to. Curious minds wish to know.

"user-j17ym4en5b," A pity you had to shove down our throats your personal bias against and hatred for one of the guests of the show, Joey Heatherton -- the person whose name alone brought many of us to this Video. [ed. - perhaps she blew him off by not signing an autograph, that one time when she was really, really tired.] Then, by preceding it with seemingly endless, personal anecdotes about broadcasting line-ups in your TV market as a child and your affinity for David Steinberg, filling in for Mike Douglas, and Olivia Newton John.
Whether the audience here knows Joey Heatherton from A - Z or if this is their introduction, I can't imagine any viewer thinking or exclaiming, following hearing and seeing her sing "I Honestly Love You," that she's nothing but a "Vegas sex bomb[shell] and TV and magazine ads pitchwoman for Serta mattresses." That sweet Olivia Newton John would be kind and curious when asking, "'user-j17ym4en5b,' just WHAT did Joey do to YOU?, to get you so riled."

"Bravo!, Bravo,! Joey and Peter." And hats off to David Steinberg for doing a warm, informative, personal interview and making the guests and audience feel comfortable. Host Mike Douglas, sick or on vacation? Now, how would HE have done this segment different?
    Technical feedback:
First half of this 7-minute segment audio levels are sufficient for all participants. But when Peter and Joey move cross stage to the piano Joey's vocal levels are too LOW. The sound mixer 'blew it.'
Either way, she captured Peter's timeless lyrics beautifully, ever-so-sweetly and lovingly.
Thank you, "The Music & Magic of Peter Allen."
