The Tetris Effect is real. After a while, people will disappear from your life because they can't put up with you. Others will tolerate you but place you in a low position of status. Both situations suck, and make hanging out with people extremely difficult. And then all you have is the practice of law, and you only have the practice of law because the practice of law destroyed everything else in your life.
I just started law school and this is my biggest fear! Im completely opposite of the personality of a lawyer right now- (artistic wanderlust) I don’t want to change this side of me ever!
You don't have to become a depressed a-hole. :) there are plenty of other attorneys who don't litigate and can maintain their humanity. Hope law school is going well for you! I'm an attorney in NC and would like to think I'm a normal person, though dealing with many aggravating people does take its toll.
Lawyers are depressed because they are workaholics. I work with many lawyers and their perception of life is different than the normal person. They think in terms as what legally applies as oppose to what is morally right or wrong. They have to remain objective in order to serve their clients. They don't show their "tender" side and many of them do not have one. Many are extremely narcissistic or simply indifferent to "feelings". To put it in a nutshell "a courtroom is not a place where the truth is discovered so that justice can prevail. A courtroom is an arena where two lawyers battle it out to win." It's all about winning. Believe me, I've been putting up with them for 25 years and it's extremely stressful for secretaries of attorneys.
I think that's true to some extent. I'm an attorney in North Carolina & have worked for some attorneys who were obnoxious, psychos, or probably bipolar and/drug addicts. Going solo has made all the difference because now I don't have to deal with as many garbage cases and be under someone else's thumb.
Hi, this video just showed up on my youtube feed today & I thank you for drawing attention to these important topics. In North Carolina, attorneys have to take a substance abuse/mental health class because of the prevalence of those problems in the profession.
I totally agree. Main reason is that we must deal with miserable annoying and/or lying people all the timez, be it our own clients, co-workers, or opposing counsel. Sometimes judges have also been rude to me, but that has gotten better the longer I've been in practice. I'm a solo practitioner in North Carolina now.

Great insight!
That's sad but I see this with many workaholic attorneys.

Great video but you missed the stress from opposing counsels, clients and courts.
