I tried the Darkglass plugin and really liked it. Very tight bass sound. Also love the fact that you can take the same sound to a live rig with the actual pedal.
Wow. That's awesome. But with the first approach you are free to use your favorite distortion plugin for higher ranges after you compressed the bottom spectrum. And of course you are totally more opened for further sound design when having 3 tracks in your mix channels. But beside that Neurals latest plugin is awesome sounding on its own and has a fantastic workflow. Those guys make unbelievable good plugins. Cheers
I just downloaded both trials. Playing both, initially I had a strong preference for the tone of the Darkglass. It just has "that sound". However after extensive testing I decided to go with the the Parallax. It just sat in the mix much better and really fattened things up and the parallel distortion sounds sooooo good. I realise I could have tried to achieve the same with the Dark Glass by splitting the channel but whose got time for that! Also, while the Parallax plugin layout is initially a bit confusing, after a few minutes I had mastered it and actually find it very intuitive.
What I'm getting from all of these demos is that if I'm willing to put in the extra work to splitting the channels, the Darkglass is the better sounding option. Would this be fair? I'm not a live musician, so I'm definitely willing to split the channels to chase the fatter low end tone, it's the sound of the distortion I'm most concerned with
@@OfficiallyMaidenless Hey I know you asked this a while ago but figured I'd answer so anyone else with the same question would have an answer. For the most part you are correct, Parallax does the splitting for you, distorting the mids and highs while leaving clean bass frequencies that you can compress a ton within Parallax. With the Darkglass plugin, it's like using the real world version where youd have to split the signal yourself. BUT! I still split my signal manually even with Parallax. I follow the Getgood approach where I split the signal 3 ways; One is a slightly compressed DI, no high or low pass just regular DI, this helps me retain the attack of the notes that can get mashed with drive, I have this track low in the mix, if it's too loud it'll sound weird with the dirty tracks. The second signal goes to the Parallax, which I have set fairly clean, this is where I get the "clank", and this is also where I compress the hell out of the lows, so it's pretty much handling the high and low frequencies. The third signal goes to either a guitar amp plugin or my Axe FX, I put a high pass on before the amp to cut out the super lows that make a guitar amp flub out, and this is where the bulk of the drive comes from as well as the mids. Mix them all together with some in-the-box EQ and comp where needed, and you pretty much have that famous Nolly type tone.
@@Major_Fuzzz that's dope my guy, I actually went with Darkglass but I'm going to try using those techniques myself, I've been using a clean compressed channel and letting DG do the rest of the work, but it feels like I'm trying to make cookies without butter, you know what I mean?
@@OfficiallyMaidenless I felt that! I spent WEEKS trying to dial in a P Bass to sound like that. Finally got it to work, but it's just a TON of trial and error
Absolutely my sentiment. Plus we hear these tones all the time, of course, for that reason. And thats great for dsp sales and another nail in the coffin of progression of the art form :music. “I could mix it so quick” oh dear.
I would say the Microtubes X Ultra as it allows you to adjust the low and high pass filters for your distortion and compress the low band and adjust high/low levels. If you want it to, it also can compress all bands. Compared to Parallax it really just lacks the mid level and drive controls, only has high.
I'm not always trying to mix everything in DAW to get a perfect sound, and I hate bringing up my DAW just to play/practice, so prefer to use all my NDSPs in standalone mode. If I'm looking for more gritty distorted sounds (Tool, AIC, Staind, etc) which works best for casual playing in standalone mode?
I have the parallax but I feel like I'd like some more adjustments I could make myself. The mid and high gain sound too compressed above like 30 and I wish I could change the q curve of the mid distortion
@realheadphonecandy its supposed to be a very versatile plugin but I think I'm too stupid to make it sound good... I will say that using 3rd party cab sims can make it sound better
Is it fair to say that Parallax is a more computer orientated take on the Darkglass X pedals? I'd get one or the other but am steered towards the X Ultra as I could use it live etc.
Yeah they're very similar in what they're trying to achieve, but of course the Parallax will give you more control. I think you'll be able to get a tone pretty comparable to the Parallax with an X Ultra. You could also consider going ampless and using the Parallax, but that's a whole other can of worms lmao
guys i'm trying to make a billy sheehan like tone.....how can i use this plugin to my advantage in helping with that....the problems i face are that the low end gets distorted as well when trying to gain mids and highs...but im not satisfied with the darkglass distortion for this kind of tone as the distortion is very heavy.....can someone help me pls.....
I bought this plugin!!please 2 questions!First is where can I find good IRs and Second is please do a proper mixing of a song(metal/metalcore/djent) for bass using Parallax!!I mean after Parallax don't you need other eq/compression/limiter, whatever, for a final mix??
my question is, do you still split the high and low end into 2 different channels? or does the parallax plug in let you do all of this one 1 bass track?
i bought the darkglass. this video is like "ha Sucka! 2 months later we released a better product! sucks to be you! oh by the way, no upgrade to the more comprehensive suite. we already got your money!" Thanks for that Neural DSP. great vid.

You know it's good when he can't help but smile at his own mix.
I really dig these parallax demos. Definitely a tool that I need to have at my disposal for heavy tones
Thanks, duder! I honestly think this'll be my go-to from here on. Even just in terms of time saved, it's well worth it.
I'd like to see a video discussing possibilities of using them together to get unique tones.

That settings @1:54 sold it for me. BlackFriday2020 yuuuuurr
BlackFriday2021 yeahh!
BlackFriday2024 yeaaaahh!!
Great comparison, I'm really sold on the Parallax plugin! \m/
Thanks! Seriously, it's such a good plugin. Its gonna be on every mix of mine from here on. 🤘🤘

@@Major_Fuzzz yoooo dude thanks for the tips, I got a FAT beefy tone by combining the DI with Darkglass and then a helix amped track
I really dislike Parallax because practically every tone is rich and mix ready. How do you decide on a tone when everything is gold?
Absolutely my sentiment. Plus we hear these tones all the time, of course, for that reason. And thats great for dsp sales and another nail in the coffin of progression of the art form :music. “I could mix it so quick” oh dear.
Exact the question I had, thanks!
Any time, dude! I'm happy that I could help!
Damn, I was surprised when you punched in the drums. That was a sweet track and not what I expected.
Thanks for sharing, I was hoping someone would make a video to compare the two plugins.
My pleasure!
Well, this settles it for me.. I'm getting the Parallax 😊
I wonder what going from my Darkglass microtube 500 into my DAW and Parallax would sound like? 🤔
what would the equivalent be for Parallax in a real pedal if you were preforming? I love the sound of the plugin and use it a lot
Probably the Darkglass Microtubes Ultra

I have these two plugins, and I wouldn't choose one over the other. In my case, I can use both for different purposes.
Sounds awesome if there was a special for bundles id all the plugins
Both plugins sound good, but Parallax sounds fatter to me!
I totally agree. I think that mid band is so helpful in getting that fat sound and clear articulation at the same time. 🤘🤘
i see myself using parallax as well on 808s

amazing plugin
Agreed!

Do you think you can use it for cleaner tones or for more overdrive instead of full on metal?

Why do you need IRs when the plugin already has cabinet simulation? Or are you not quite fond of the default options and searching for something else?
@@A-E-O-N the IR's for parallax aren't that good apparently
why does everything has to be metal can yoy show so clean tones funk.r&b i need to see something diff to buy Thank you
Why not both?
You my errant friend, have the right idea.
Man that camera is struggling in video auto focus.
my question is, do you still split the high and low end into 2 different channels? or does the parallax plug in let you do all of this one 1 bass track?
Did you even watch 1 min of the video?
Can it make your guitar sound like it's a bass?
thats the petrucci plugin
If you downpitch a guitar by an octave you can get close enough for mixing
Parallax is so good it's cheating LOL
Did someone just bust into a doom track on a plugin demo?! Just picked up Parallax.....money well spent
