    As another comment on CD / DVD "rot " I have sometimes used small dabs of "white-out ' to repair small scratches or dimples on the PRINTED SIDE of disks so that the laser would play through minor damaged reflective layers. Your thoughts ?

    OMG I'm having the same issue tonight too only with the BDP-S300. Im wondering if it's the same drive in my older machine, but with faster electronics around it since mine takes forever to do ANYTHING. Same problem: except mine wont read stamped blu rays from Paramount. And I usually only use BluRay to watch Star Trek. All Star Trek on Blu-ray. All Paramount. This is a big issue for me. I love the look of this classy player Im going to attempt this same repair tomorrow. Your awesome, and one of the few in the world with the skills to do these repairs (especially on Beta Machines) so keep it up we all need you and your skill. 🙂

    I remember those early days of DVDS. I still have a couple of first generation DVDs. I still have my original first DVD player when they first came out and it was 500 bucks USD. I bet that old player will not play todays new DVDs. I think it was a Toshiba.

    I fixed my old dvd player, I saw some thinks you did on your videos and thank you, all I did was just cleaned some ports of the dvd reader and now its reading discs again and if I am lucky it plays CDs.
    The dvd player is the Bench KH6776.

    My Brother gave me a Sony BDP-S360 Blu-Ray Player more than a decade ago & I went to turn mine on about a week ago & mine’s not reading Blu-Ray, DVD or CD Disks either, Wonder if their’s a Systemic issue with Sony Blu-Ray Players, I though it bizarre that UA-cam recommended your Video to me even though I hadn’t performed a search either on Google, UA-cam or anywhere else for that matter, I’ve got some of those Dual Sided Disks at: 14:50, The Rock which I have on DVD with Sean Connery & Nicholas Cage actually has the 1st side of the Film on Side A & second half of the Film on Side B, How weird is that, Bit like a HD version of a VideoCD! Awesome! Another Sony!
    I wonder what causes some dual sided pre-recorded DVD's to freeze or not play when they played fine before? I do not scratch my disks. I tried googling it, but cannot find the answer.
    I buy tv shows on DVD, and had to replace one set. My new set was all one sided DVD's.
    Oh, I had to replace a single sided DVD because it wouldn't play some of the songs of a concert.
    Btw, this happens in all of my players.

      The glue that bonds the 2 disks together can break down and attack the reflective surface.

    From my research. Sony updated their Blu-Ray standards. Same problem trying to play all blu ray discs with non-free Debian package. It only plays the older Blu rays.

    I also have a Sony BPS 350 that I brought from Toronto to Brazil in 2009. It´s been working fine since then, although recently it´s having some hiccups (doesn´t freeze) playing some Blu Ray discs. It still can play DVDs and Audio CDs normally. Since there is no issue with DVDs and CDs I was told by a service agent that the motor mechanism could be faulty. He argued Blu Rays mechanisms wear out quickly as they spin at a much faster speed. I also moved to the seaside in 2018 and I suspect the high humidity could be clouding the lens and the mirrors. I´m puzzled why it´d only happen to a couple of Blu Ray discs while some others play without any trouble. Any clues?

      The unit has 3 lasers and 2 lenses. A blue laser for Blu-ray discs with it's own lens and a red and infrared laser which both share the second lens. So it is very possible to have a bad blue laser and the red and infrared to be totally fine as they are seperate units that use their own mirrors and lenses.

    On my s550, sometimes I could insert and eject the same BD disc several times, and it wouldn't load. One more try, it would work.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Рік тому +1

      Thats kind of how this one was. All disc's were like that. Now it works on DVD every time and bd 2 out of 3 times loads and then it rejects. Take disk our pit back in and it reads. Good enough for what I am doing. If it was a customers set I would be telling them to buy a new one because customers are assholes one rejected disk even if it loads the next time and its coming back as a boomerang.

    Hi Dave, have any of your viewers or yourself used an optical cloth ( like ones given by opticians to clean glasses ) in order to clean lasers and lenses in malfunctioning machines ? I would be tempted to cut up a cloth and apply small cloth tabs to a toothpick so that I could get to small difficult places unreachable with a cotton swab. I have scratched some glasses by using paper napkins, towels or T-shirts as cleaning devices. I learned the hard way.

      Can't get to the back of the lens and if you poke something into the mirror it will likely knock it out of alignment.

    I see that the red laser splits in three beams. Does the infrared and blue laser do the same?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Рік тому +1

      The red and ir take the same path. Into semi transparent mirror then hits the mirror at the bottom. Of the shot over to another mirror on the base up to disk and back to mirror then to the one at the bottom and then back to semi transparent mirror this time through that mirror to the pickup. The blue through semi transparent, through the secondary focus and into the stack with the lens up to the disk and back down to mirror back through secondary focus lens and reflects through beam splitter mirror to the detector.

    Why you never adjust the potentiometers which controls the resistance of the laser

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Рік тому

      To accurately adjust laser power requires a laser power meter which i don't have. Turning the power up is a good way to burn the laser out. Also this one has no adjustment.

    Im curious to know why you leave all your electronics running 24/7, surely thats just a waste of energy?
    Those 3 SKEW screws have to be 100% perfect in alignment, otherwise discs will stop either at the start, middle or right at the end.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 місяці тому

      I don't leave everything running 24/7. Just my security cameras and a couple of raspberry pi playing out content on the house modulators. Power consumption for everything in the media closet is a couple hundred watts total, and that includes the cameras communication equipment ect. The old fish tank which I am waiting for the last fish to die about 500 watts 24/7 for the pump. Another 100 for the light 12 hours a day. All my computers, stereo equipment and TV shut off when not using. All the stand-by power is wasted power but I am not about to unplug everything and then have to reset every time I want to use. My water heater is on a timer as is the hvac and ev charging
      All the heavy lifting is done at night when the rates drop over night. Thats when the water heater, car charging and things like dish washer, laundry ect is run.

    These older Sony player have lasted well, way beyond their intended lifespan.
    You can pick them up very cheaply or for nothing sometimes.
    Replacing the laser is just not worth it, and some new lasers have been instock for too long
    i have had to return a few that were just dead.
    They can still give an excellent performance, and have all the connections that are missing
    these days.

When we had them at work I would borrow a few for the night but I can say I have never paid to rent a movie and I have never ordered a movie or ppv event on my TV sub. I have the movie channels so I just wait for them to come on the movie channel.
