One important thing to note re: TV compatibility with the HD Retrovision component cables: they can be made to work with any HDTV if used in combination with an up-scaler device, such as the RetroTink 2x! I run this set up at home with my SNES, and also my Genesis (HD Retro Vision also makes Genesis Cables) and it's awesome!
Thanks man that's some excellent information! Up-scalers weren't even on my radar when I made this video, but when I get a new tv in the future I'll be looking in to them as well.
Yes! I found the website that documents all serial numbers that people found to contain the 1-chip consoles. The Super Famicom is even less documented. I wanted the Super Famicom version and purposely looked for days till I found the closest match that was documented. Thankfully most of the Japanese sellers take a picture of the bottom. I took the roll of the dice and I Got It! Also was the best version 1-chip-02! Which is just a hair sharper than 1-chip-01. Very cool find man. It is definitely worth the effort to track down. Also funny the wife walked in lol. I KNOW exactly how that is. Congrats!
Thanks CMG! Oh wow so cool that you have one as well. So why did you opt for the Super Famicom? It can't play US games so I didn't even consider it. Like you though I took the dice roll and was a bit nervous as I was opening it up to check the board version. Luckily it turned out to be the 1chip-01 which I was ecstatic at seeing. Ahhhh such SNES splendor...
@@philberto78 I really like the Super Famicom from a cosmetic standpoint. The European version is also the same. I knew I was going to have trouble with my USA cartridges, but I found out with a little modding a gameshark (hack saw and black tape lol) I could place the US cart on top and play per usual. I used it for a bit, then I found the ultimate solution that is a perfect fit both ways. Basically a Super Famicom cart with a open top for US games. Even FX games work perfect. Looks alot better than my hack job too lol. Ton of great import games to play and a ton cheaper than the American counter part on many occasions. Of course the US Super Nintendo can play Japanese games perfect and is much easier to just pull the two tabs in the cart slot. I just had to go the harder route ha!
@@TheAlphaOmegaX3 Ah yes I prefer the look of the non-US versions as well. Sounds like you've had some adventures with it lol! I pulled the tabs out of my 1chip already so I could play my japanese games. Good stuff... So when are you going to put out another video man?
@@philberto78 Hope to have another up in the week. Taking a day off from work and at that time get another done. Always a challenge especially with kids home for summer time. Will be covering my current third favorite console of all time! (kinda bounces back and fourth between third and fourth lol)
Awesome! If you have one with a serial number starting with UN3 then it's most likely a 1chip model but the only way to tell for sure is to take the console apart and see what the board has printed on it. It will say something like 1chip-01 or 1chip-02.
Dude, all this is news to me. I have an yellow fellow of my own, but knowing there is a unique run of the SNES that you have that I don't will keep me interested in gaming for a few months more. Philberto is channeling powers from a higher dimension that even he doesn't understand. Have a good trip bro sneak in a game hunt on a cell phone video if you get a chance. Tell your brother his inheritance doesn't include Vampire Night box set.
Haha I'm glad I can keep you interested in gaming for at least another few months, that's the high quality public service my videos provide brotha! I'll see what I can do about a game hunt but the stores around my folk's house are kinda lacking. Actually my brother passed away in 2007 and that's why I have his old 3DO collection in my possession now. I'm sure he'd be jealous of my Vampire Night box though if he was still around ;-)
UN3 does not guarantee a 1chip. The only way to tell if you have a 1chip is to take the system apart and look at the board or to use a flashcart or if you own a game that you can get developer info out of it.
I think an easier way to see the difference is that the original model’s eject button has Eject printed on it, while the newer model has Eject molded on it. I have the newer one.
You can listen in this video ua-cam.com/video/tapVDb-cJnQ/v-deo.html and there are no difference in sound but in picture quality you have a big improvement
@philberto78 Update! I just picked up a 1chip-03 for a 2chip price. I heard those are the best, but need some work done to fix some artifacts in the signal. I can see every single pixel which makes some games like the Donkey Kong series look grainy.
@@philberto78 yes and no. Some games actually look worse to me because there’s TOO much detail. I had to turn down the sharpness on my TV (late 90s Trinitron). Maybe my eye is just used to composite on the Genesis and 2chip s video on the SNES?
@@Biospark88 Haha I hear ya, I had the same experience when I first got an HD tv actually. Suddenly watching Godzilla movies seemed different because I could see how cheaply made the monster costumes actually looked. You can still enjoy playing SNES either way at least.
It's pretty subtle all things considered, but when you put them side by side you can really tell. Unfortunately the word is out and people overcharge (and willingly overpay, sustaining the prices) for known 1chips...
@@philberto78 it’s all over the place but significantly more (I’ve seen double or even triple) than a 2chip. From what I understand the SNES Jr is a better buy if you know how to mod it without spending extra, and it’s guaranteed to have a 1chip. I play my SNES games on a Trinitron TV with S-Video and they look great, but there’s still that bit of softness so mine’s likely a 2chip.
@@Biospark88 Nice! If you've got a Trinitron and the s-video connection then you've almost achieved SNES perfection already. I'd recommend the 1chip mostly to people who just really have a high level of nostalgia or love for the SNES.
@@philberto78 it's my all time favorite console and my machine of choice as a kid, though I have to admit the Genesis is challenging it for top spot as I experience more of its library. My Trinitron doesn't have component in, so I'm stuck playing my Genesis games on an X'Eye with double headed composite. They look good enough this way, but I still wonder what I'm missing out on...
@@Biospark88 It's definitely worth getting a 1chip then Biospark, you won't regret it. I love both consoles as well and actually I had a Genesis years before I had the SNES. Wow you have an X-eye? I modded my original model 1 myself (not too hard) and I honestly could never go back to composite.
