I had the pleasure of calling this race, as well as the Niatross destruction of the world record at a mile and one eighth. Yes, Shelly was one of my best friends. What a tragic loss. Regards Robin Burns
I remember when we lost him because he was supposed to be at Roosevelt for the International as I remember the night after the accident that took his life at Hollywood Park.
Mark...thank you as always. Little rusty at first, but I am settled in now. In fact, already been asked to come back next year. I want to set the Guiness record for oldest guy ever to call a full meet!!! LOL!!!
Robin Burns A return trip is in order, along with the EQUINE entertainment, i have to make a visit to the blackjack tables to even the score from the last visit...LOL...
boy do i remember that night I was there we knew who Eddie Cobb was he used to race at hollypark but he hadnt been there in 8 years and brought Genghis Khan we knew he wouldnt be there after 8 years if he didnt have a very good horse and we let him win his tune up race with Cobb in the bike at 15-1 then he puts Shelly in the bike for the classic and gets 4-1 would sure like a second chance at that one and as good as Kahn was he never beats Niatross who was blowing world records apart I was there for Niatross world record for a mile at the time best horse I have ever seen
Ron Muntz When Dave Elliott got a couple of the uptie harnesses, he would put them on the ones they were gambling on at the Meadowlands...we had a couple when i worked for Ray Flis...
also i groomed an international winner when i worked out ther for ross blackman,,the horse won the race i don't know how many years earlier but i took care of him when he was like 10 or 11 years old,,hal brunt,,look him up,,,
So, the lights were temporary for harness racing? Seems like a huge expense to install them for the standardbreds and take them out for the thoroughbreds.
I think the lights were added for the Harness and Quarter Horse meets (prior to 1984, I believe Hollywood also had quarter horse racing). Eventually they were expanded for the T-Breds.
The lights were part of the real estate at HoPk from 1964 on..Marie Everett(the POS Bi&!H that she was) decided in 1983 to redesign the Turf Club and re-engineer the main track to 1 1/16 mile to effectively freeze out the Standardbred element..She was rewarded with the 1984 BREEDERS CUP for this unconscionable deed..

Shelly the Master
i worked for "well" eddie cobb to a few years earlier at los alamitos,,
he really got good when eddie cobb put the tie up harness on him,,

Very astute comment. You must be a horseman.
Would have loved to see a mature Niatross go up against Ghengis Kahn, who blossomed into a very fast, winning horse
Buddy Gilmour favorite horse Millers Scout
He also loved Mayaka Prince. My dad owned that one.

Millers Scout could run 1:57 at Yonkers as long as Docs Fella went 1:56.4 in front of him.
Maybe he wasn't THAT GOOD? When the horse jumped up, shouldn't he have thought of that possibility??
