Welcome back to Back to History. In today's video we are looking at the fascinating life of Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg Schwerin. Born in the minor German Duchy, Marie would one day become Grand Duchess of Russia through her marriage. Today she is best remembered as the grandest of all Grand Duchesses for her extensive partying and socializing. Having been the last Romanov to leave Russia after the Revolution, Marie would die quite early at the age of 66 in her French villa.

Excelleny subject, a formidable woman living in interesting times. Maria had four children, three sons (Kyril, Boris and Andrei) and daughter Elena. Marie probably finally converted because Nicholas ii had one sick son and one unmarried brother. Her sons would be next in line so she acted to improve their chances.

After the death of tsar Nicolas and his brother Michael, Kyril became heir to the throne in 1924. But his mother was already dead and never saw her son becoming head of the imperial family. He married his first cousin and his granddaughter Maria is now head of the family. This would make an interesting video as her position is very controversial with the other Romanov

She was never considered a great beauty, she was known for her style Dagmar and Elizabeth were known for their beauty at the time.

So, Wilhelm II, grandson of Queen Victoria, is her cousin or something?
