I'll say this. There are several videos of Metcalf South out there, and they are what they are. Yours stands out from the rest. The scenes are clear, in focus, stable, and capture the feeling of the mall perfectly. I liken it to a parent looking around their home and realizing the children are all gone now. The video coupled with the acoustic guitar solo reminds me of the empty feeling I felt walking through the mall in later years knowing how it was once bustling with activity. The mall walker fade out at the end is a nice touch. Thank you for taking the time to film and put this together. Well done!
kccadn700ts I agree! Too many of these mall videos the people are moving the camera around so much that it makes you nauseous!

Does anyone remember back in the 70s the Venture Store on the South West Corner there on 95th and Metcalf .. I was always fascinated how your groceries were rung up, bagged, and then put on they conveyor system and you pulled your car up to the side where they would load them into your car.
Beautiful video. But man, soooo sad! I remember going to this mall all the time when I first moved to Kansas back in 93. Gloria Jeans had the best coffee I've ever tasted.
I remember Metcalf South Mall in it's heyday back in the 70's and 80's. Many of my fondest childhood memories revolved around this place. From going to see Santa Clause at christmas to checking out the hot ladies in my late teens to mid 20's. RIP Metcalf South.
I also remember that. I grew up in the 70's and 80's and graduated in 89. Although we went to Oak Park Mall quite a bit since we lived on the Lenexa side and it was the more popular destination by the late 70's for socializing with other kids, my brother and I always had a sentimental place for Metcalf South. It was the "it" mall for our grandmother and even our mother from the 60's and early 70's and they continued to shop there up until the mid 80's from time to time. But mainly, in the early 80's it sort of felt like our secret for my brother and I. I mean it had a Clint's Comix, and arcade (which was Nickelodeon back in the 70's...just like Oak Park Mall had), but became something else and eventually Red Baron by the late 80's...and it had our favorite burger place, Smak's. Again, we loved that because our grandmother used to take us for a burger there in the early 70's to early 80's when we were still kids. She lived in Roeland Park for years, but always like to go to Metcalf South and would often take us. The last couple years we went regularly was around 83-85, when my brother was in his last 2 years of high school and before he left for the armey and could drive us both without having to get a ride. I was still in jr. high and we'd go once a week or so and play a few video games, buy a comic or 2 from Clint's if any of he ones we read were out and buy a burger from Smak's. Then we'd sneak up that tower/fire escape stairwell and sit at the top eating our burgers and reading our new comics. Those are some fond memories. My brother graduated in 85 and immediately shipped out for the Army. I went on my own to check the mall out from time to time and play a game, check out the comics(although I never really collected, it was more of my brothers thing) , and grab a burger, but it just wasn't the same without my brother around. He only did a standard 2 years stint and was back from Germany to KC in 87, but he was enrolled at KU and living down there with his girlfriend in their apartment so we didn't see each other nearly as much during my high school years from 85-89. I similarly joined the Navy after high school and shipped out and wound up stationed in Hawaii on a sub. I only did my 6 years as a submariner, but I remained in Hawaii for 27 years since I had met and married my wife who was born and raised there and I used the GI Bill for the U of Hawaii. We only recently moved from Hawaii back to Overland Park, but for years when I would come home for visits , I would always take my wife for a trip to Metcalf South and I would look at that old Metcalf South sign on that stairwell and have fond memories. By the time I graduated high school in 89, it was clear the mall was eventually going to go down, but it was nice to visit the girl during the 90's and 2000's on trips home to visit.
this one hurts the most (more than Bannister and more than Indian Springs)...spent sooooo much time here in the 80s, I loved going to the Taco Villa on the 3rd floor, but those stairs terrified me! my mom used to love the Jones Store (LOL), there was also a little cafeteria type place in the lower floor, near "Jones'".....I think
I hear you. I didn't grow up going going to Bannister and Indian Springs...went there a few times, but I grew up in Shawnee/Lenexa. Oak Park Mall and Metcalf South were the two main malls and everyone my age pretty much went to Oak Park for socializing, but my brother and I preferred Metcalf South much more. Our grandmother used to take us there in mid 70's when we were kids and my mom was a young adult when Metcalf South was built and it was her go to shopping place for years. We just always like the different feel/shops of Metcalf to Oak Park Mall. I graduated high school in 89, and immediately left home, making my way to Hawaii with the Navy and lived there for over 20 years and only recently moved back to the area and missed the final days of Metcalf South, although I did visit the girl every 2 or 3 years when I'd come back home for a visit. By the way, I am pretty sure the cafeteria place you wrote of is none other than one of the famous Myron Green's Cafeteria's that were spread around the KC area at one time. I used to eat at that one and the Mission location with my grandparents quite a bit when I was a kid in the 70's.
When did Macy's leave? I finally got to return to OP Christmas 2015 after being away from 20 years, and only Sears was open then. I was just glad to find Topsy's had moved across the street to where Venture used to be.
