This album was one of those from the 70's where every song was a potential #1. A great band that had symphonic cohesion in their compositions. Great songwriting and performance. They are even better live.
They recorded and mixed their debut in 3 weeks....cutting the drums for multiple songs over 9 minutes long....no click track ...tempo changes ....time signature changes ? YIKES.......... Kerry Livgren is / was a genius . Legit . Most of this just came from his head.
I cried watching this. Young people who did not grow up with this band appreciating their music. Thank you so much! The average age of the 5 surviving band members is 74. Robbie Steinhardt having already passed. Their music will live on forever.
I see Kansas and I automatically hit like! Kansas in the 70’s was very progressive. Most people don’t get past Dust In The Wind or Carry On Wayward Son but they have a huge catalogue of music that is epic. I saw them live in 1987 and twice this year. They are incredible live. When you get a chance you should listen to the entire Leftoverture album. You won’t be disappointed. Thank you for reacting to this amazing group!
Giant wormhole opened here. A deeper dive beyond the radio hits will be most rewarding. Song for America, A Glimpse of Home, Closet Chronicles, Mysteries and Mayhem, and SO many more. A band that truly has it all. Great melodies, complex arrangements, and phenomenal vocals.
My favorite band of all time... by far. They just announced a week ago that they're doing a 50th anniversary tour this summer, starting in June. These will be 2 hour + shows, and I guarantee you this song is one they'll play as part of this tour. You should really see them on this tour if it's within a few hours drive of where you live, it's WELL worth it. I've seen them 5 times since 2016 and they do not disappoint. Go see them, you'll be SO glad you did! Not many bands can even say they have been able to hang around for 50 years, much less still be touring and making new music too at that point! They released a new album in 2020 called "The Absence Of Presence", and it's fantastic!
You mentioned that Kansas would be fun to see in concert. Well, Brian May, of Queen, said it perfectly " Incredible music and when they play it's like listening to a record." Pretty high praise. They're the best live band I've ever seen.
Great choice for a Kansas song! This 66 year old still loves this music! I recommend "Apercu" and Death of mother nature suite" played together off their first album. I love your reviews!
I also think Steve Walsh is the greatest male rock vocalist, super underrated, I wanna cry every time I listen to him sing. As a testament to his vocal prowess, please react to Journey From Mariabronn (his greatest studio vocal performance where he vocalizes for a straight 40 seconds), The Wall, Icarus - Borne On Wings of Steel, or Hold On (another disay of vocal showmanship). Take it from a 17 year old Kansas fan, their music transcends time into every generation. I already saw them twice and will see them twice again in June.
Thanks... it was like I was hearing it all over again... Every track on that album is fantastic you should listen to the whole thing... And then go back to the beginning .. you're just scratching the surface..all the world.. should be next.👍
This is a perfect album. You need to listen to the whole thing from top to bottom in one sitting. It will change your life as it did mine when I was 12 years old in 1976. I went from a classically trained violinist to one that just wanted to rock and have long hair and a long beard like my hero Robby Steinhardt the violinist of Kansas. Which I did achieve 2 years later when I grew my first beard at 14 and let my hair grow. All because of this record.🙂🎻🎸
Steve Walsh is one of the best rock vocalists - ever. He’s also the band’s organist, and their vibraphonist. He’s still putting out great music today, though has retired from touring.
This is the first tune I heard when my older brother brought the album home when it was released in 76. I was 11 and came home from baseball practice. I stood in my tracks listening and Kansas was my favorite band from then on. Walsh in his prime was the best rock vocalist period. He was unreal playing live.
"Tell me now dear Mother, tell me what's it like to be so old. Children grown and leaving, seems the world is growing cold. And though your body's ailing you your mind is just like new." - Boy that really hits home.
Remember thinking what a profound statement that was so many years ago as a teen when this song was popular. Now I am that mother and grandmother. It's ironic and beautiful at the same time. Wouldn't change any of it. It's the journey of life.
Who else could combine electric and acoustic guitars, synth, bass, organ, violin AND a gong, and make it sound this good? Their song, Carry On Wayward Son, and Peter Frampton's Do You Feel Like We Do dominated the air waves around this time.
Great track from a great album. I was a big fan of Kansas growing up, ever since hearing Dust in the wind as a 12 year old. None of my Aussie mates understood me at school but I am stilla big fan of Prog.
I saw Kansas at Sweden Rock Festival 2011. Didn't know much about them, but they were magical! Among the absolute best I've seen live, and I've seen A LOT
Kansas, Rush, this 63yr olds favorite Bands of all time! 70’s Prog Rock is AWESOME!!!! Go deep into their albums, you won’t be disappointed!! Thank you!
4/4 and 7/8 are predominate throughout. When I was young, very young before learning how to play odd time, I would marvel at this song. Eventually, I'd come to learn how to read and play odd time inside and over the bar. Opened up a whole new world of progressive playing for me.
The awesome Bassist is Dave Hope who also converted to Christianity around the same time as composer Kerry Livgren. They started a band called AD which were also brilliant and he then became a Reverend in the Episcopalian church
Kansas is in my top 5 bands of all time! Every musician in this band is top notch: Steve Walsh(lead vocals/keyboards), Kerry Livgren(guitars/keyboards/main lyrical writer), Robbie Steinhardt(violin/vocals), Phil Ehart(drums), Rich Williams(guitars), and Dave Hope(bass guitar) Their hits would be Carry On Wayward Son, Dust In The Wind, Point Of No Return, Song For America, Portrait/He Knew, The Wall, Play The Game Tonight, Fight Fire With Fire, etc.. Since I'm a major Kansas fan I love all of their albums! I recommend listening to the studio versions of their songs first and then delve into the live versions! Thank you for reacting to one of my favorite bands of all time! They are still touring today, but only 2 original members Phil Ehart and Rich Williams are still with the band and Robbie Steinhardt passed away just recently! Please react to more Kansas, thank you!
Bassist Dave Hope here left the band to become an Anglican Priest. Leftoverture was one of the first USA prog albums I ever bought here in the UK and is still one I listen to today.
This is my favourite album by Kansas. As the previous comment said, every track a potential number one. But, they still have so many awesome tracks that are not on this album. They could certainly keep you guys busy for a while! Great job!
Do Magnum Opus! Prog at it's best......or Journey from Mariabronn. Kansas are brilliant....I say 'are' because they are still going, still touring and putting out albums!
The singer, Steve Walsh was for me hands down the best there was at this time. Check out the live album Two For The Show. Dio was his only competition really.
Check out Song For America, Your Reason To Be, Magnum Opus, The Wall, Lamplight Symphony, Carry On My Wayward Son, Cheyenne Anthem. So many great songs by this group and they are still touring!♥️✌️
The instrument you had trouble identifying is the violin (the lady was close when she said fiddle). You play fiddle on violin but fiddle is more about the style you play. Fiddling is more associated with folk and country music but Steinhardt's playing here is more classical so it's just violin. However, if you want to hear Steinhardt playing fiddle, check out Kansas' song Down the Road from their Song for America album. I listen to it often. Miracles Out of Nowhere is one of my favorite Kansas songs (and their entire Leftoverture album should be experienced). It's also fairly unique in that in the middle of the song they break into a fugue, which you don't often hear in modern music (and for their Device - Voice - Drum live DVD, they had the guy at Animusic animate that section). My all-time favorite Kansas song would have to be The Pinnacle, which is actually the second song of a three-part trilogy: Mysteries and Mayhem, The Pinnacle, and Carry on Wayward Son (the first two being on their prior album, Masque, the third being the opening track of Leftoverture).
The entire album is worth a listen Not a clunker on it Kerry was on a creative songwriting high here Kansas still tours steadily today The only original members are the guitar player and the drummer (although their current bass player and sometime vocalist, Billy Greer, has been with them going on 40 years) they have a VERY talented lineup currently. Does the original proud They were blessed with two great singers in their heyday (1970s) Robbie Steinhardt (the "fiddle" player lol here) sang the lead on this one. RIP. He passed about a year ago Steve Walsh was the high counter vocal (and the organ player) Walsh (in his prime) was untouchable as a singer. Truly, a gifted voice FYI: the bass player is Dave Hope Dave also converted to Christianity (thru Kerry' guidance) and is now a minister in Florida. He overcame a heavy substance abuse problem So, Miracles out of Nowhere indeed! :-) Suggestions from this album The Wall Cheyenne Anthem and if you want a wild epic/ride..Magnum Opus It'll floor ya BTW: Carry on wayward son is also on this album. This album saved their careers. A HUGE hit in 1976 Rock on guys (and gals) You are fun to watch!
This album was one of those from the 70's where every song was a potential #1. A great band that had symphonic cohesion in their compositions. Great songwriting and performance. They are even better live.
Kansas has lots of brilliant records but this is really masterpiece. I love Audio-visions album as well.
@@travellerseko SOOO agree with you! This, "Song for America" and "Point of Know Return" were off-the-charts AWESOME!

Steinhardt and Walsh trading vocals. This shit is beyond amazing.
I cried watching this. Young people who did not grow up with this band appreciating their music. Thank you so much!

Steve Walsh is one of the most underrated vocalists, ever.
America's Best Classic Prog band !!! 👍🎶

Steve Walsh is one of the best rock vocalist no one knows the name of.
The whole Leftoverture album is awesome must listen to front to back!
KANSAS is the BEST rock band the USA has ever spawned! The famous 'Leftoverture' album is a TIMELESS MASTERPIECE!
Dave Hope was one of the best bass players of the day. I'll even go so far as to say ever!
This is such a killer song ❤ always one of my favorites 👏🏻
Should hear this live, have followed Kansas- from Louisiana --Mississippi even to Oklahoma over the past 45 yrs.
CHILD OF INNOCENCE is my favorite Kansas song, off their MASQUE album, my favorite album cover.
They reach in and pull your heart out.
Kansas, The prog masters!
Great song choice and album. Kansas always delivered top shelf vocals and musicianship.
That was fun! Welcome to a big, wider world! These guys bring it by the trainload every time they suit up! Glad you enjoyed it!
Garth Brooks saw them and was blown away. He exclaimed after, did I just see that, wow, incredible!
He knew. He knew more than me and you.
Kansas rules!!!
Dave Hope was one of the greatest “prog” bassists of the day. Melody, tone, timing he had it all.
Don’t forget Phil Ehart, the most underrated drummer of all time!
@@howardcrosby4388 Hope and Ehart = masterful rhythm section
I saw Kansas many times in the 70s and they were great

I’ve seen them eight time. Seven in the late seventies and in 2018. They always blow me away
Going to see them in Seattle Sept 8th at the Paramount

They had back to back albums (Leftoverture and Point of No Return) that were just phenomenal. Both went 4X platinum.
First concert I ever saw. “Dust in the Wind” was charting and that was the show opener. They played the album and three encores. Excellent live show!
Always loved this song❤️
Saw them 3 times in the mid to late 70s as their original lineup. Yeah, I was that big a fan and still am.
This is the first tune I heard when my older brother brought the album home when it was released in 76. I was 11 and came home from baseball practice. My favorite band to see live in the 70s. Every time they came to Chicago I was there.
Great track from a great album. I was a big fan of Kansas growing up, ever since hearing Dust in the wind as a 12 year old. None of my Aussie mates understood me at school but I am stilla big fan of Prog.
Yes. Kansas is REALLY fun to see live!!!
The bass player is Dave Hope one of the original members from 1974.
No one played like Kansas!!!!!
You know its a good song when it ends with a gong!
I had this album when I was a teenager and this is the first time in like 30 yrs I heard this some and still remember it all. Thanks Guys!
That dude could sing.I’ve seen some their live stuff on here, and he’s just as good.
Kansas is worth diving into. All master. Musicians, with Kerry Livgren’s vocals and Steve Walsh’s vocals., epic!
I saw Kansas at Sweden Rock Festival 2011. Didn't know much about them, but they were magical! Among the absolute best I've seen live, and I've seen A LOT

Kansas was awesome prog rock at it’s finest❤
Don't forget Robbie Steinhardt's violin as well. Robbie was also the secondary vocalist.
Love playing drums to this. The mixed meter and time changes are fun.

They still exist. I've seen them three times and they're great live.
Saw them in Oakland about 1977. Very high energy and playing exceptionally well together. Think of the band Yes after drinking a gallon of coffee.
Would that have been a Day On The Green concert?
The awesome Bassist is Dave Hope who also converted to Christianity around the same time as composer Kerry Livgren. They started a band called AD which were also brilliant and he then became a Reverend in the Episcopalian church
The two of you always make me feel better!
Kansas was my very first concert. They played with .38 Special and they were incredible. This was back in 1980 LOL.
Love that part where Dave and Phil come in on the rounds.
That's the 7/8 middle part and it is what makes this song so progressive in my opinion.
Kansas is in my top 5 bands of all time! My favorite Kansas song, Livgren is an amazing songwriter.
One of my favorites! Thanks for the trip to my teens. BTW, you guys are awesome.
You need to react to the entire album. It’s a masterpiece.
Came out the year my crowd got drivers licenses and car stereos. Wore out a cassette copy of this masterwork.
Great choice! One of their best. Try "The Wall" for more superb vocals from the great Steve Walsh! This is a Hall of Fame snub band.
best band of the world ...!
KANSAS IS THE MOST FUCKING LAYERED, ARTICULATE, EMOTIONALLY INTELLECTUAL, INSPIRING, AND GREATEST AMERICAN PROG BAND OF ALL TIME.

There are various other amazing good songs on the “Masque” album. Fantastic band!
I saw Kansas in the early 2000s. The absolutely tightest band I ever saw live.
Saw them a couple of years before covid and they were great ..
You should check out "The Song the River Sang" - off Kansas latest album. It is jaw dropping good !
They were good to see live I seen them 4 times between 1979 to 1981 they put on a damn good show
Love you both, honest reviews
Know you probably have heard of “ Dust in the Wind”….They are the absolute kings of transitions.
The Leftoverture Album was the best ever- all the song were written in a week-during a recording session-God was smiling on them all-

Great duos by Steve Walsh and Robby Steindhart vocals. Guys, you must also rection to : THE PINNACLE ,by KANSAS
Check out Song For America, Your Reason To Be, Magnum Opus, The Wall, Lamplight Symphony, Carry On My Wayward Son, Cheyenne Anthem. So many great songs by this group and they are still touring!♥️✌️
The version of this song with the London Symphony Orchestra from the album "Always Never the Same" is amazing. I highly recommend it.
Great band and great song. Need to check Song For America.
I saw the Leftoverature tour when I was in high school. It was awesome. I saw them many more times. PLAY STARSHIP TROOPER BY YES.

You are fun to watch!
Magnum Opus is another really good piece. This is a very progressive album. Great listening cranked up!
