These Things are Incredible! Fossil Hunt, Making Ammonite Cabochons, and Prepping Ammolite!

- In this one we work with some of my favorite material: Ammolite! We start the day by heading out to my fossil beds to hunt for some Cretaceous goodness and got into some very nice baculites, ammonites, and clam fossils! One thing that I say all the time is make sure to hold onto broken ammonites, and once we get back to the shop i demonstrate why that is; some ammonites are highly calcified, meaning they can be worked into absolutely stunning ammonite cabochons! Alternatively, you may find one of the biggest prizes of all(That being ammolite) which takes a bit of work but the end result is absolutely astonishing! I hope you all enjoy this one, and look forward to some awesome content coming very soon!

Hands down my favorite of your videos so far Theo!!! Those cabs are gorgeous!!!! And that red ammolite…there are no words…breath taking!***please show the cabbing to ring process that would be wonderful to see!
I agree!!! Excellent video ❤️
Thanks so much!😄 that seriously means a lot! That ammolite is some otherworldly stuff😁 and i would be happy to show how to make ammolite cabs!😄 may be fun to make a ring or two
Fossils at the Disco! I'm hypnotized by pretty sparklies! Words, words and more words of happy goodness. Stay safe.
Theo another reason why i enjoy watching your videos, is not just for the amazing stones, gems & fossils u find, or the fact that u make jewellery & carve forms, plus how to prep amolite another awesum video, but u keep it real, theres no showmanship or rehearsed bits, you just keep it real, which means i can relate & im sure theres a heap of rock & fossil hounders out there that feel the same.
Yes and Yes to both questions, regarding prep and cabochons. Thank you.
Can do!😄 thanks so much for watching!
Fossil prepping you say? - YES PLEASE! Please show Ammonite cabbing too !
Yes, yes, yes! Please show the whole process of stabilizing, making doublet, shaping cab! I love ammolite, too!
Definitely can do!😄
Hey! Aren't you in Florida? The hunt, the finding, the selecting, the preping and of course the polishing. Very disjointed, scattered but exceedingly good and lots of fun. Thanks for sharing the magic. Be happy, safe and stay healthy 😷⚒
Yeah, would love to see you work that ammolite into cabs and then jewelry.
Absolutely can do!😄👍
Oh my! I need to find me some ammonite/ammolite for my collection. I've been rockhounding for years, and have recently began cutting and polishing a lot of my finds(agates, fossils, and gemstones) in large part due to watching your amazing videos and mad lapidary skills in action! Anyways I wanted to say that I really enjoyed this style of video in which you documented the whole journey from rockhounding to cleaning to cutting/grinding to polishing/styling into its final stage.
Thank you so much!😄 that truly means a lot! I love doing these "start to finish" types of video; its so much fun to watch a totally raw stone in a field turn into something pretty☺ ill definitely be doing more like this soon!
Yes! More cabochons! And rings! Please!! 🤩🤩🥰🥰
Think you’ve just converted me to these super fossils. Love ❤️ what you’ve done with them. Appreciate your talent Theo. Many blessings for always showing the best of our beautiful world 🌎. Keep her clean.
They are amazing for sure!😄 i think ammolite and ammonites are the go-to for converting rock hounds into fossil hounds😂 hard not to fall in love with those things! Thanks so mucj for watching!
Those cabochons were very nice and I'd love to see you turn the other ones into cabochons! Thanks for the video.
Absolutely!😄 id be happy to show the cabbing!
WOW how stunning are those. Beautiful work Theo
Man, that colour never gets old!!
Those Amolite pieces are like holograms! Fine work!!!
Yes, would like to see all.
Love to see more fossil working and yes would like to see the cab making...
Can do!😄👍
I bought some fossils at an auction last year. I had no idea that the fossil with the "puzzle pattern" was ammonite. It's huge but only a small section of the full ammonite. I didn't know what to do with it until now. Thank you Theo. And ammolite!!! Holy crap, how have I not heard of this before? I got a broken ammonite in a mixed bag lot. It was already polished and has some of that "opal" going on in it. I was planning on cutting it up and cabbing it. Now I know what I'm working with.
Ammolite is some amaxing stuff for sure!😄 and gotta love those sutures!😁 definitely give the cabbing a go if you have some broken specimens to play with; they turn out just so cool!😁
Ok my friend, I thought my morning coffee was the way to start my day, but heck no, it was your video on fossils!
Even had to grab my drool rag buddy! Hahaha...
A beautiful day you had hounding, looked like a promising area too
Love the cabs you made from the busted ammonites.
Theo, start collecting the larger busted ammonites and I will show you an entirely different way to cut and cab ammonites....👍
Great video as always and keep on hounding ...
Thanks so much my friend!😄 its an interesting area for sure! Havent spent too much time over there but based on the number of broken ammonites we were turning up i think there may be some gooduns hiding out there😁 i would absolutely love to take you up on your offer too! Those ammonite cabochons of yours are something else! Thanks so much for watching my friend!😄
Yes please Theo, I would love to see you cab those ammolites.🙂👍
These are so cool!THis is why I love rockhounding so much!
I'm very thankful you are better.
Wow the colors in that ammolite are insane! And those ammonite cabs came out great!
😱 That was amazing!! Please show more fossil prep. 👍👏👏
Yes to all the above. Those cabs and ammolites are awesome, the colours are so rich I can see why you love them. Thx for the share and stay safe and rock on.👍🇦🇺
Wow. The amonite makes amazing cabochons. I never would have guessed. I will have to try that next summer. After I go on an amonite hunt.
Great day! You sure got a lot of nice Ammolite.
Awesome video Theo! Glad you’re feeling better😊the ammonites and ammolites are beautiful! Love watching the preps🤩❤️
Thanks so much! And yes i definitely am too😅 havent been that sick in awhile but no worries, all better now and it was just a head cold😄 thanks so much for watching!
I really like all of your videos and I can't quite figure out why I'm thinking this may be your best one..👍👍
Thanks so much!😄 that truly means a lot!
I want rings! Thanks Theo, I learn so much from your videos!
I'm so glad you can find Ammolite down there!!! Beautiful work, I gotta get my hands on a flat lap.
Oooo love fossils and rocks! Dibs on those cabochons Beautiful hugs from Montana!

Right!? That big ine is just crazy! Gotta love the ammolite😁 thanks so much for watching!😄
Hope you feel better. It would be great to see the georgous ammolites into cabochons.
Wonderful blue sky. It is just grey grey grey in Denmark at the moment. So I am lookin forward for your videos. Can't wait for the next 🤩🤩🤩
This has been one of the best videos I have seen lately. Yes, I want to see more corboshons. They are just beautiful. Stay well.
Thank you so much!😄 that truly means a lot!
Though the big sheets of ammolite are pretty, I LOVE the piece that looks like a mosaic! So cool!
That one is so unusual!😄 i dont think ive ever found a piece quite like that one
Ammolicious!!
Wow just stunning and amazing to be able to just pick them up off the ground!
The cabs looks amazing..
Wow!! Love those cabachons, the Ammolites are mind blowing! What treasures!! So cool to watch the process of stabilizing and polishing! Thanks Theo!👍😀🐚
They are just so mucj fun to work with😁 hard not to fall in love with that ammolite😄
The suture cab looks like snakeskin. I am amazed the crackly looking ammonite pieces don’t crumble upon polishing! Cool area, Floyd is totally good luck….and no cows!
Everything you do is interesting! 😁🇨🇦♥️🇨🇦
Wow that ammolite is absolutely gorgeous!!! I’m jealous! 😂 dude seriously it’s REALLY cool!!!
Awesome finds. I love the cabochons. So beautiful. Can't wait to see what you do with the ammolite. Thanks for sharing
Love those cabochons!
My daughter loves the ammolite
Incredible stuff!! And I would love to see your next steps on those ammolite cabs.
AWESOME VIDEO!! Yes it would be cool to see you finish the ammolite into a ring or other piece of jewelry. It’s amazing material.
Keep rockin!!👍😎
That was AMAZING!... you just sweetened my day. Than'x Theo.
The variety of fossils and the beautiful colors you uncovered were amazing ❣️
Loved this video ❣️ never can be to long👍
The huge colorful fossil is a beautiful shelf piece!!!
Thanks so much!😄 gotta love that bearpaw shale material! Some amazing fossils in montana☺ thanks so much for watching!
Lovely to see.
You have an amazing talent, those turned out beautiful. Thank you for sharing your video.
Great video. Thanks for sharing how you work with the ammolite. Looking forward to the next video you make with the ammolite cabs.
how is this stuff real?!! not to mention so underrated! ammolite is cooler than any other gemstone I’ve seen.. the red shifting piece literally looked like a mosaic work of art
it’s also so unassuming , but once you shave off just a little bit of weathering it’s incredible again
Love your videos ❤️👍
Hiya Theo, awesome video, I love working with fossils, that's how most of my cabs end of being, about 99 percent of them, the others are agates and other materials. One day I would love to go find some of the fossils you find. So keep up the awesome work. I hope you have a awesome blessed day.
Cya! 😺🐟out!
WOW! Beautiful.
Love everything you share with us!
Please do more ammolites.. and the ring making
Yes, would like to see more prep and definitely the ammolite cabochons. I was fascinated with the ammonite slices. I have been watching a lot of videos filmed in England of fossil hunting and some searchers concentrate on ammonites and I was getting a bit burned out on ammonites, you sparked a whole new interest. Thank you.
Thank you so much! That teuly means a lot!😄 the diversity amongst ammonites is just crazy, so much variation in shape and color, and thats not even factoring in the ammolite aspect😁 i will definitely make a video showing the whole process!
Nice video 👌👌👌👌and beautiful cabochons 💎💎💎😎👍👍👍
Love these videos. Thank you for doing them. Man all that ammolite.. 💜💜💜🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great stuff Theo! I'm always interested in seeing fossils prepped and turned into stuff.
If your camera isn't showing the uv glow in the right color, you might try adjusting white balance or picture profile if those are options in the menu. Just make sure you remember how it's set before you adjust anything so you can go back to those settings.
Thanks for the tips!😄 ill definitely see if that helps and my phone will cooperate the next time i pull out the UV👍
Who says ammonite is only in western Alberta? Lovely video.
I think you should make anything on your next podcast because everything you do is awesome! God bless you and Merry Christmas!🎅
I'd love to see the ammolite cabs made
Wow! So many awesome finds. I love the sutures on the ammonite cabochons and those colors on the ammolites are crazy! You definitely found your calling, such a perfectionist, nicely done. Thanks for a fantastic video!✌🤠
Thanks so much! That truly means a lot!😄 it is always such a joy to work with that ammolite😁 and the cabbing is so much fun, great way to repurpose some broken fossils😂 thanks so much for watching!
Wow! Beautiful!!
So beautiful
Wow! What an awesome video man! I would love to see you make those Ammolites into cabochons btw and really enjoyed this video and your makers challenge video! Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much! That trult means a lot!😄 and i will definitely make a video showing the whole process!☺
Nice & wonderful 👍👍👍👍
Theo your vids are inspiring 👏👏👏
Beautiful
Craftsman!!
Oh my gosh you found so much and wow didn't they all turn out stunning ❤️😍 ring please ❤️💍
The Pierre Shale truly is on another level. It’s a world apart from eagle ford and Fayetteville.
Amazing video!!
Congratulations!!
I live in Montana, but I’ve only been rockhounding for crystals & agates. Thanks for this educational video, I’m going to look for fossils now too. I love the fossil prepping. And, Theo, will you tell us the tools you are using so I can do this stuff too. (Get well ❤️)
I used the live in Billings, now up N of Spokane but I do miss rockhounding Montana :) hope you find some great stuff
Thanks so much!😄 definitely give it a go! If you're in Montana then you're in one of the best places in the country to go find some good specimens😁 as for the tools i used, i am using a flat lap to level and polish those pieces of ammolite, and to excavate the fossils i am using an air scribe; the best way to describe it is a hand held jack hammer👍 they are the safest and fastest way to excavate for sure!
Amazing, Beautiful rock's thank you for sharing yourself with us! Wow! Merry Christmas! 🎅🙏🎅🙏
Oh my goodness I am in love with the ammolite. I don't remember seeing them before. Where have I been? I really enjoyed watching you make the Cabs. I also like watching the hunt. Thanks For the video
I’d love to see some ammolite anything! so whatever you decide i am very ok with lol! hope you had a great thanksgiving!
Amazing. Loved the lil peep sample you used for the back tracking in this one 👊
I also have and use a Graves Faceting Machine Mk 1 except I use mine for Faceting only.
Rings!!!
I could see a big Turtle shell from the big Ammolite . sure u could come up with head & feet , tail . Just a thought !! Doing great love ur stuff . Thank U !!
Awesome! I just came across your channel today. Ammolite is my favourite!! I’m always afraid to work on/ clean up any of mine, even the small broken pieces haha
Theo so Amazing. Thanks for the journey. Do you have to stabilize them?
Depends on what your end goal with them is; for example if you just a display specimen, a polish is enough for stabilizing for as you go up in grit you actually close off the grain and prevent oxidation, but for use in jewelry you do need to stabilize them. Ammolite is very fragile so a strong backing is required and a layer of jewelers resin overtop to nake sure the ammolite isnt fractured or scratched
If you ever visit Alberta in Lethbridge some of the fields can find good quality material , great video !
Nice background music
Words might be hard at times Theo but your EYES are sharp as sharp can be! You can see treasure where most see old rock lol I want a chunky silver ammonite ring so I guess I better get hunting (or hoping one will pop up on your Etsy store....)
Wow Theo those are some really nice pieces I wouldn’t know where to start looking for that stuff here in New England I live in Massachusetts and everything is private don’t go near those don’t go there getting down to the beach is always too crowded with people laying around on every little piece I can find in the Rivers they rage all the time
I preferred it before you rounded the edges, I would have just made a necklace like that
Yes, I want to see the ammolite cabs finished. And when polishing the ammolite, can you grind away the color, like with opals?
Definitely can do!😄 and yes you can absolutely go through the color layer; luckily those layers are far thicker than color bars on an opal so there is far less risk of losing your color pocket with ammolite, but the color only exists within the outermost shell layer, which generally acerages around 2-5 mm thick
New sub. This is amazing. Speechless.
Love your vids :)
Belíssima....parabéns pelo achado
Wow, so beutiful, I LOVED the red one, but I love the others too. Wish it was more simple to trade from USA to Scandinavia, but, it is not as easy as 10-20 years ago, and we have to pay very high taxes too :-(. You make BEUTIFUL cabochons!!! They almost looks like opal (ammolites)
Man I've never found any like that
By the way ...this video was pretty amazing
