These Things are Incredible! Fossil Hunt, Making Ammonite Cabochons, and Prepping Ammolite!

  • In this one we work with some of my favorite material: Ammolite! We start the day by heading out to my fossil beds to hunt for some Cretaceous goodness and got into some very nice baculites, ammonites, and clam fossils! One thing that I say all the time is make sure to hold onto broken ammonites, and once we get back to the shop i demonstrate why that is; some ammonites are highly calcified, meaning they can be worked into absolutely stunning ammonite cabochons! Alternatively, you may find one of the biggest prizes of all(That being ammolite) which takes a bit of work but the end result is absolutely astonishing! I hope you all enjoy this one, and look forward to some awesome content coming very soon!

    Theo another reason why i enjoy watching your videos, is not just for the amazing stones, gems & fossils u find, or the fact that u make jewellery & carve forms, plus how to prep amolite another awesum video, but u keep it real, theres no showmanship or rehearsed bits, you just keep it real, which means i can relate & im sure theres a heap of rock & fossil hounders out there that feel the same.

    Hey! Aren't you in Florida? The hunt, the finding, the selecting, the preping and of course the polishing. Very disjointed, scattered but exceedingly good and lots of fun. Thanks for sharing the magic. Be happy, safe and stay healthy 😷⚒

    Oh my! I need to find me some ammonite/ammolite for my collection. I've been rockhounding for years, and have recently began cutting and polishing a lot of my finds(agates, fossils, and gemstones) in large part due to watching your amazing videos and mad lapidary skills in action! Anyways I wanted to say that I really enjoyed this style of video in which you documented the whole journey from rockhounding to cleaning to cutting/grinding to polishing/styling into its final stage.

    I bought some fossils at an auction last year. I had no idea that the fossil with the "puzzle pattern" was ammonite. It's huge but only a small section of the full ammonite. I didn't know what to do with it until now. Thank you Theo. And ammolite!!! Holy crap, how have I not heard of this before? I got a broken ammonite in a mixed bag lot. It was already polished and has some of that "opal" going on in it. I was planning on cutting it up and cabbing it. Now I know what I'm working with.

    Even had to grab my drool rag buddy! Hahaha...
    A beautiful day you had hounding, looked like a promising area too
    Love the cabs you made from the busted ammonites.
    Theo, start collecting the larger busted ammonites and I will show you an entirely different way to cut and cab ammonites....👍

Those ammonite cabochons of yours are something else! Thanks so much for watching my friend!😄

If you're in Montana then you're in one of the best places in the country to go find some good specimens😁 as for the tools i used, i am using a flat lap to level and polish those pieces of ammolite, and to excavate the fossils i am using an air scribe; the best way to describe it is a hand held jack hammer👍 they are the safest and fastest way to excavate for sure!

    Theo so Amazing. Thanks for the journey. Do you have to stabilize them?

    • @TheoKellison
      @TheoKellison  2 роки тому

      Depends on what your end goal with them is; for example if you just a display specimen, a polish is enough for stabilizing for as you go up in grit you actually close off the grain and prevent oxidation, but for use in jewelry you do need to stabilize them. Ammolite is very fragile so a strong backing is required and a layer of jewelers resin overtop to nake sure the ammolite isnt fractured or scratched

    Yes, I want to see the ammolite cabs finished. And when polishing the ammolite, can you grind away the color, like with opals?

      Definitely can do!😄 and yes you can absolutely go through the color layer; luckily those layers are far thicker than color bars on an opal so there is far less risk of losing your color pocket with ammolite, but the color only exists within the outermost shell layer, which generally acerages around 2-5 mm thick

    Wow, so beutiful, I LOVED the red one, but I love the others too. Wish it was more simple to trade from USA to Scandinavia, but, it is not as easy as 10-20 years ago, and we have to pay very high taxes too :-(. You make BEUTIFUL cabochons!!! They almost looks like opal (ammolites)
