- Today I am sharing with you the reasons you may still find yourself overweight or gaining weight as a vegan, eating a plant based diet. So many think that switching to veganism is going to automatically make them drop some extra body fat, but that is just not the case. I'll be chatting with you on the top reasons I struggled (my first go round) losing the weight when I switched over to a vegan, plant based diet.

6 pounds to go for 200 pounds less than I was in the 90s. Veggie/Vegan/Potatoes/McDougall/Chef AJ/Joel Furman. We can all use encouragement or reinforcement of what we already know. Thank-You. All of these vids help.
Wow amazing! So proud of you. Thanks for watching.
@@jbb_01 Thanx for the words of encouragement. More like 10 years to lose 160 pounds. I was still huge only 10 years ago. I've hit a snag or two lately but very soon I will be able to claim 200 pounds since my absolute heaviest in the 1990s.
@@HealthyVeganMama Thank-You so much. It's never ending and a daily grind. You're amazing. Stunning and so full of life.
You're doing doing great!
Congratulations!
Patience has been the key for me. 15 lbs. down since Christmas! People forget it didn't take a week to put the weight on, and it won't take a week to melt it off! No matter how much kale you eat! LOL!
Exactly right! Way to go!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😊😊🤣🤣🤣
So True! I had people asking me how much weight have you lost and I had only been eating vegan for a short while.
It took a year and half for me to lose 30 lbs but I was never hungry, in fact ate so much I couldn’t believe I was losing. It stayed off five years later. Slow is the way to go.
@@robinsaxophone232 Agree! Congrats on keeping it off. Definitely what I struggle with the most. Consistency is very important, for sure.
OMG! This video is dead on on all points. After working at losing 25 pounds for 20 years with NO results, not snacking between meals has finally budged my stagnant weight loss. I thought I was a deficient not functioning bad unit all these years! It's IMPOSSIBLE to lose weight when your insulin is up. It takes 2 hours after eating for your insulin to normalize and level out. So if you graze all day long, you will NEVER lose weight. You have to let your body rest after working hard on digestion, so that it can then get on to detoxing and cleansing (ie. losing weight). So eat huge veggie and fruit laden meals to be full, and don't snack. Am down 12 pounds - 13 to go.
Way to go 👊🏻 I bet it feels great finally breaking through. Those last 10-15 lbs can be tough to get past. Awesome!
Same here. I stopped snacking and lost 25 lbs over a period of several months and it has stayed off.
If you spread out 1000 calories of pure starch over 8 meals, you'll still lose weight because Calories are limited. More calories will drive up your insulin longer and harder. Calories matter in the end. This is why Roux en Y recepients all get over type 2 diabetes, despite eating carbohydrates after surgery - it's because they are eating far less calories. Less insulin output, and less esterfication (fat absorption).
In the end, a calorie, is a calorie, is a calorie - when it comes to weight loss. You can lose weight eating 1000 calories of pure carbs, pure fats, or pure protein...because the calories are what will make you fat. Eat low(er) fat, or exercise, or just eat slightly less food overall and you will take off weight.
Not everyone’s bodies work the same though. Some people lose weight by snacking. It’s important to focus on YOUR body.
@@maryd1495 I totally agree with you. Everyone is truly different when it comes to how they process food. Some thrive on carnivore eating, or grazing all day, or only one meal a day. It’s all over the place. Fine tuning oneself is the way to go for sure.
My daughter and I went vegan 3 half years ago. Initially we gained lots of weight - this was simply because we got over excited about all the amazing vegan products out there and just over indulged! Since mid January we have both lost weight. I lost 1.5 stone, my daughter 15lb. We did this by counting calories, using an app, and weighing food. Its easy and we feel great.
What app did you use?
This was awesome summary/ list of pitfalls. Thanks for recommending that we can use a couch and a reference. I have joined recently and enjoying your videos. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Love this video. It’s so inspiring. A younger version of me seems to have known these things. Thank you for the friendly reminder! Many thanks to all of you for sharing your stories!
I have been a vegan for 30 years & totally agree w/ your analysis. Going vegan is not the same as conscious vegan b/c all vegan food is not created equal. Keep it clean. Good job! Keep up the work!
Thanks so much. I appreciate you watching 🌱
So I'm still learning. clean vegans are called conscious vegans or clean vegans?
@@dianeibsen5994 Clean vegans are called morons other vegans are called idiots ITS JUST A DAMN DIET PEOPLE
@@dianeibsen5994 I believe the term is a whole food, plant based diet.
I would like to see a current pantry tour! Thank you for sharing all of this goodness 🥰
Thanks for sharing; all great points! Love this new food journey!
Great advice! I started my weight loss journey in March when I was 273lbs..after sticking to a low-carb, plant-based plan with intermittent fasting I have lost over 40lbs...the snacking is hard but I grab a piece of fruit or chew on sugar free gum to distract myself...
This is absolutely wonderful information. Thank you!
Excellent overview!! Very impressive list and lots of great ideas. Thank you!!
I have been vegan for about 5 months and only lost 10 lbs. I need to lose about 40 lbs to be at a healthy weight. My mom lost 50 lbs in 7 months but was avoiding oils and processed foods. This list is so helpful and I'm throwing out my oils now! Great video!
Hey that’s amazing! So happy you found this helpful. I was stuck for years and it wasn’t u til I did these things where the u healthy weight started to go away. Best of luck to you

Great video. I too thought something was wrong with me. I was sick and tired of being fat bc it was starting to hurt. I tried plant based but olive oil Nuts beans tahini and avocado were my downfall. I kept gaining. Then I heard about calorie density and then I just stuck to water veggies fruits steamed or oil free roasted potatoes and oats to keep my life simple. You are awesome. Your channel is straight facts!!!!! ❤️
That is great to hear! And thank you so much.
Thank you so much! I felt like you were sitting me down one-on-one and telling me what my problem was.............. but with solutions. You got me all together! Oh I’m so glad this helped in some way. Thanks for watching and for being here. Best of luck to you.

Hi Tia,
Thank you for this video today. I’m down 30lbs, but since moving house I have really fallen off the whole food wagon, still plant based, but those processed foods have crept back in. Going to plan all my meals for the week ahead and jump back on that wagon xx
Wow congrats. You must feel great!
that's awesome! Congrats
Tia, I read a lot of comments today. You are so thoughtful and kind. I hope you have a great week!
❤️ thank you. I love chatting with everyone and hope to be as clear as possible on this. I know how confusing it can be. It’s so sad all of the wrong information out there and I love helping in any way I can. I appreciate your sweet comment.
I never understood why smoothies were so popular. You can take in tons of calories in seconds. It's better to chew all those foods, much more satisfying, takes much longer to digest, and slower glucose increase.
Yes yes! 🙌🏻
I use smoothies as a way to get those extra things in, like collagen, spiralina, and ground flax. Add those to some almond milk with a handful of fresh spinach and a few frozen berries and it's a super nutritious and low calorie drink.
You had me at Mamajama 😊 just subscribed. Honest and common sense explanations. Thank you.
Hahah thanks for the sub
Amen it is my attachment to food. It is in my head because everything you said I already knew. I always sabotage myself but I am doing great today and will try to continue.

That last tip resonated with me. Thank you
If you don't create a calorie deficit; you don't drop weight. Processed foods are higher in calories. Fat is 9 calories per gram vs 4 cal per gram of carbs or protein. The best plan is to determine your tdee.
It’s all about a calorie deficit 🙌🏻
@@ericdahl2915 I know. I think it can be so confusing with all the “fads” out there...but science is science 🌱 Have a great day.
Good advice. I am a whole food plant based vegan and I avoid oils but in 2020 with the quarantine I gained 10 lbs. I used to go to the gym every day at 5:00 AM but then the gyms shut down so my exercise routine changed and not in a good way. I still run and cycle but not as regularly as going to the gym daily rain or shine. I move less now yet consume the same as when I worked out more. Also working from home I swapped out my daily salad for lunch for more snacks throughout the day. Gotta either eat less calorie dense foods or move more (or both) but 2020 was very stressful so I am trying to be kind to myself about it.
Being kind to yourself is first on the list fir sure. It’s okay, we all slip every now and then...all of us 😌 Sounds like you are working towards getting back on the saddle 🌱
I hear you!!! Exact same boat here, even missing the 5am workout, and 11 pound weight gain 🙄
Im following you for ideas. Im 63 and not very active. Started the WFPB eating last week. I love it. Thank you.
Your energy is so delightful ❤❤❤
New subscriber! And just LOVE and appreciated this tip based video! I could probably drink that smoothie every day! Thank you!
Hi there! Thank you for subscribing and watching. That smoothie is sooooo good.
I needed this today because I'm gaining instead of losing. I'm in menopause so there are hormone issues, but I know there's more and I normally eat more processed because I prepare a separate meal for my family and sometimes I'm just too tired after working all day and after cooking for them and I take the lazy way out, so I've got to do better.
Sticking to whole plant foods should help your hormones. Mine have changed dramatically. Best of luck to you and thanks for watching.
I can relate. Wanting to eat this way and still preparing other meals for my family. I was being tempted to eat the things I know that I do not want to anymore. It really is a battle with the mind.
Just saw this and I SO agree! I'm older, working full time, and doing this on my own. I haven't really lost anything. My lab results are good, but I'd love to get over this self sabotage.
Thank you so much for this video! I have been eating vegan for a little over a year. I didn't go into this way of life trying to lose weight but to be healthy and I feel much better..I've dropped about 25 pounds since I've started but , I feel that I'm not eating properly to really see the results I want. I am definitely going to implement the suggestions you've made. This has been one of the most helpful videos I've seen. Thank you so much
Omg girl everything you said is right. I know exactly how to loose weight but I let my mind control me all this years . Let me resetting my mind this day forward. Peace ☮️
Your amazing and a ray of sunshine. Thank you. I have been vegan for 5 years. In the beginning I lost 45 pounds . I felt amazing and had energy. But during Covid I gained 30 lbs. back. I was buying processed food and to many “vegan snacks”. I need to stop the excuses. Thank you

Good sensible advice, something to think about. I have wondered if our current microbiome when we're fatter can actually mentally influence us to maintain itself that way. Your comments on how you used to think are very familiar. Great explanation.
Thanks so much for watching

The bonus piece was worth this video by itself. The mind is a dangerous place sometimes. That is where my biggest hang up is. Thank you for being open about it. Down almost 50 lbs since becoming vegan. Well on my way for the best version of myself. Keep up the good work!
It really can mess with us so much. Excellent to hear that you are down 50 lbs. you must feel amazing.

LOVE THE HAIR😍
Thanks ☺️
One of the most helpful yet simplistic video I have watched in my nine years being vegan (and learning everyday)
That’s so nice of you to say, thank you. Happy you enjoyed it.
It’s Jeffrey, great Video! I’m subscribing. Karen and I have been Vegan for years, Karen a few years longer. I’m 56, when I dropped dairy I lost 10LBS or more. I then moved to 100% plant based. I then got to a high school/college weight. 157LBS I’m almost 6 feet. Here is the big learning, I added intermittent fasting and added coconut out to my coffee and don’t eat until 11:00, have to be done eating before 7:00 (I’m working to close that window an hour or two) I dropped 6 to 7 lbs of fat. Thoughts? I have posted some videos around this and will update.
I love your sharing! We DO eat out of boredom! This has been my greatest epiphany. Wishing You Great Health Abundant Happiness And Outrageous Love ❤️
Is that sustainable long term .
@@jemmastone11 yes, however we’ve started eating earlier on weekends. I don’t want my body thinking it needs to store fat.
Random: but yees hair!! I love it. Thanks for the tips!
Fantastic sum up of all I have learnt watching your videos. The vegan junk is the biggie for me. Already cut the oils and have minimal nuts etc. Getting better. Mental- just watching you keeps me in track. Knowing I have a friend in the corner. Everyone around me lives an extravagant style of meat and treats. You my friend -make it fun. You make it simple. ❤️❤️
You are so sweet! It seems like you are doing your best and like you said getting better. That’s fantastic!
Great video, amazing advice. I'd be lying if I said I didn't already know all this, but still great video.
My smoothies are just fruit and water, it definitely fills my tummy. Plus unlike juice it still has the fiber, and yes drinking it slowly does help.❤
Awesome message! Subscribed👍🏾
Thanks so much. I appreciate you subscribing.
But sometimes, you really need a snack and your body tells you for real. I agree not to eat mindlessly, but don't deprive your body from a healthy snack if you need it. I suffered from anorexia and i don't wanna go down the restriction route again.
Absolutely eat when you are hungry or are in need of food.
Thank you for this video ❤❤❤❤
Another tip could be if you're having cravings and absolutely need food, eat potatoes. They are so good for you and so filling, and take your cravings away
Oh yes!! Great tip!
Better yet eat sweet potatoes.
I love to hear that! I love potatoes. Not a big fan of the sweet potato but what can you do?
I love to eat carrots 🥕
Aren't the starchy veggies high in carbs and fattening? So I've heard... So confused about all the info out there!
I absolutely love your video. Good information. I am a committed juicer, I juice my own and I have lost 14 pounds in 10 days. I am plant based too. I eat a small raw meal before 6pm along with Intermediate fasting. You are doing a great job! Be encourage and thank for the information.
That’s amazing. You must feel amazing! Thanks for watching. It’s my pleasure to share.
Thanks for this! 💛
My pleasure
this was very good- can say you very much on point ---Thanks
Great advice. Thank you
Nuts, avocado and cheese were like the devil for me...I didn't know how calory dense all these were and they made me gain so much weight each time I tried going plant based...this made me fall on and off the wagon so many times over the years...now I know how I should eat and started losing weight finally..thank God!
Excellent video Hungry Vegan Mama. I never use oil to saute my vegetables (I use water instead) but I still get my healthy fats from whole plant foods. Sending love 💕 and virtual hugs 🤗 to you.
That’s fantastic! Hugs back.
Excellent idea. I recently started sautéing vegetables and brown rice in veggie stock.
Good points! I do find, however, that if I don’t eat much fat, and I over-do it on carbs, I’m ALWAYS hungry or craving more carbs. We’re all different, but I lost weight and felt satisfied and didn’t suffer eating a low carb, medium fat diet. We’re all different! It really does come down to calories in/calories out. We just have to pay attention to what works for our own bodies!
Yes eat more carbs. Carbs don’t make you fat. They keep you full and satisfied 🙌🏻 what makes us fat is eating more calories than our body burns.
Thanks so much Hungry Vegan Mama. This is a fantastic list, I've been wanting to replace olive oil for something healthier so I will try vegetable broth. I used to snack a lot too, sugary smoothies and sometimes 'vegan chocolate', then I stopped eating/drinking those for music and a book. I started loosing weight, today I'm at 113 Lbs.
So happy you enjoyed the video.
This is favorite video so far! My mind is my main problem too!
So happy you enjoyed it
