Charlie Coyote was not your normal Coyote. All he wanted to do was make friends. But every time he tried, they would run away afraid to warn the others in the area. You see, coyotes are known as hunters. They live in packs, so they will hunt any small animals to take back to feed their families. Charlie’s father was the leader of the pack. He was always trying to show Charlie how to hunt. “Remember Charlie”, his father would say. “We have to hunt to survive.” But Charlie had a good heart and didn’t want to hurt any animals in the area. All he would eat were fish, and sometimes mushrooms, which he didn’t like very much. He could never get himself to hurt another animal. One day Charlie went off by himself to hunt for fish, his favorite meal, when he came across a gray rabbit. “Hello, there Mr. Rabbit”. The rabbit turned to see who it was. When he saw Charlie, he ran off. “Everybody run”, he screamed, it’s a coyote”. Every animal in the area ran off in different directions. Charlie just sat there with a sad look on his face. He would never make a friend, he thought to himself. Charlie went on his way. As he got closer to the stream, he saw a small squirrel. “Hello Mr. Squirrel”, he said. When the squirrel saw who it was, he ran away as fast as possible. Once again Charlie just sat there with a sad look on his face. When he reached the stream he noticed there weren’t any fish.” I guess I’ll have to come back tomorrow”, he said to himself. Just before he left, he noticed a bear cub on the other side of the stream. “Hello” expecting the cub to run. “Where did you come from”, Charlie said. “I’m lost”, the bear cub said. “I can’t find my mommy”. “Which way did she go?” ‘I don’t know, she ran off after a large cat, and I haven’t seen her or my brother and sister since.” “I’ll help you find her”. “ What is your name”? Charlie asked. “My name is Teddy”. Hi Teddy, I’m Charlie. “What kind of animal are you?” “I’m a coyote.” Let’s go find your mom. The two went on their way searching for Teddy’s mother. They both walked a ways before stumbling onto some paw prints. “That looks like my mommy’s prints, Teddy said”. “Let’s follow them and see where they take us,” Charlie answered. They walked into the woods where the paw prints led them. On top of a tree, they saw an owl. “Excuse me Mr. Owl”. Charlie said. “What can I do for you?” “Did you see a large black bear come through here?” “Yes I did”, said the owl. “She ran that way chasing a large cat”. Charlie and Teddy both looked at each other. “That’s my mommy,” Teddy said. Charlie looked at Teddy. “Let’s go, I think we’re getting closer”. The two ran deep into the woods where they encountered a large deer. “Excuse us Mrs. Deer. Did you see a large black bear come this way”. She went that way after a large cat.” “Thank you.” Off they went again. This time they came across a hissing snake. “Excuse us Mr., Snake. Did a large bear come this way”. “Yessssssss, and it almost stepped on me.” Which way did she go?” Charlie asked. “She went that way, and in a huge hurry”. Charlie and Teddy walked for a while until they came across a raccoon. Excuse me Mr. Raccoon”, Charlie said. “Did you see a large bear come this way?” The only thing the raccoon saw was a coyote and scurried up a tree.” “I won’t hurt you”, Charlie said. I just want to know if you saw a large bear come through here.” “Not only did I see a bear, but I also saw a mountain lion, and they both ran that way.” “Oh no”. Teddy said we have to go help my mommy. She could be in trouble”. The two ran off as quickly as they could. Then they heard someone say. “You better stay up there, and if you ever come near my family again, you’ll have me to answer to”. It was Teddy’s mother. She had chased the mountain lion up a tree.” “Mommy, mommy”, Teddy cried out. The large bear turned around quickly to see her baby. “Teddy”, she said with excitement. Teddy quickly ran into her arms. “Are you alright baby.” “Yes Mommy”, Teddy said. “My new friend Charlie helped me find you”. “Teddy’s mother looked at Charlie. “You’re a coyote.” “Charlie looked up at her, turned around, and slowly walked away with his head down. “Where are you going, Charlie?” Teddy said. Everyone is afraid of me because they think I will hurt them. We’re not afraid of you, Teddy’s mother said. Thank you for taking care of Teddy. I ran off so fast after that cat that I forgot he couldn’t keep up with me, but because of you, he’s safe. That put a smile on Charlie’s face. He finally had a friend that wasn’t afraid of him. The three walked back to Teddy’s cave to enjoy a warm meal.
