Why would people lie about a teacher shortage? Teachers are struggling everyday with higher and higher class sizes, with no time to each any of them, because we are trying to manage behaviors! This will only increase the shortages! Teachers have been talking about this for years, before the pandemic. No one listened then; no one is listening now! Parents will only listen, when everyone is finally gone from the profession and no newbies will enter it. Veterans have been telling college students to get out of the education courses before they enter the he** that public education has become. It isn't the teachers that created it. It is the lack of funding and administrations that are taking all of the tax dollars in raises, rather than putting that money into the classroom and retaining teachers. So what do you all expect?!
They do not just work those hours. You have no idea what you’re talking about. Teachers have to work far more days to successfully do their jobs, including unpaid weekends
There is a huge shortage of great teachers who love teaching and really love the kids. After teaching for 37 years, I finally left because the administration was requiring me to dumb down the material and give everybody As and Bs whether the students earned it or not. Teachers have to put up with a lot of politics and play ball. Sadly our educational system does not put the students first.
This a case where you look to consensus opinion. Ask the people doing the job. Ask the majority of people studying the problem and go with them over a single dissenting voice.
@Mom Mom Factual history doesn't suggest to children that their lives are predetermined by events that their ancestors may or may not have been a participant. Children raised in single family homes tend to have more disciplinary issues at school. Children raised in single family homes have less than a 20 percent chance of moving up the socioeconomic ladder. Children from two parent homes are more likely to graduate and find gainful employment, they have a 40 percent chance of moving up the socioeconomic ladder. Removing the father from the nuclear family and trying to substitute him with government assistant programs has had a devastating effect on the growth and development of the children. And it is not a problem that can be corrected by throwing money at it, Baltimore Public Schools spend more than most others per pupil and they have some of the most abysmal proficiency scores in the nation. Yes there is really a shortage in this country. Teachers are underpaid and underappreciated, not only that, but they've even been demonized in certain states over imaginary culture war nonsense, such as Florida for example. Until it gets better for teachers to want to come back, it's not going to go back to way things normally are.
Notice the lack of views on this subject. Notice the amount of money paid to college coaches. Stating that the shortage is only in certain areas; allows those areas to suffer with education.
Any child who can not control himself in class, should be sent home to his parents until he can. It's obvious the parents need to finish their job first, before sending him to school.
It's a self inflicted shortage. Our local schools have enough to average 20 kids per class. However after they divert teachers to special education and development programs, it's 30+ kids per class.
Nah. At least locally, any teacher who wants to actually teach rather than practice some type of activism is leaving/retiring early. Parents who want to shield their kids from those teachers that remain are home schooling.
Teachers loved teaching, but their love for teaching can be quickly destroyed by disrespect, insults, stabbings and throwing of chairs by violent students. Add to that the attack of angry parents who knew only s*x and making babies but don't know parenting. Made it also worst by tyrannical school administrators.
Well the children of finland take less than 5 test over the course of education. Most American children are taking at least 20 test in the k-12 environment.
In public school education, there are just too many unpredictable scenarios and unknowns. Once hired, you have no idea where you're going to end up teaching, what type of students will enroll, or if administration will be supportive and competent. First year teachers usually end up at the worst schools a county has to offer, because the most desirable schools hire experienced teachers first before they consider people new to the profession. So, you're competing against legions of experienced teachers who already where all the best schools are located. If only a less desirable school hires you, then you'd have wait at least three years before you're eligible to transfer someplace else. And even after that, you're again competing with so many teachers who have been waiting for what seems like forever to get into the same top schools. The most desirable schools are usually in affluent suburbs. Teachers get paid more in these areas. School buildings in these areas are usually well maintained. Students residing in these areas are usually well parented in two-parent households. There is so much competition to get into schools with these characteristics. So, when you hear people report massive "teacher shortages" in the news, they aren't referring to schools in affluent districts. Teacher shortages are not widespread. The highest need for teachers are in areas where few people would dare go.
Well, few days ago, a Florida teacher got assaulted by her student in the hall way. She is in her late fifties. She was beaten unconscious and I am sure she will need a lot of time to recover. Considering her age, she may consider early retirement, so one more teacher gone.

Short version: Nobody wants to teach in dangerous schools, or where the pay is peanuts.
The pay is not peanuts considering they work 185 days in a school year as opposed to 245 like most other workers.
The pay is good. You can make 100k and you only work 185 days. 50 days less than most jobs.
