I did the same with mines right out the box. I never even turned it on. Only difference is I used a 512GB micro SD card I had laying around the house. I also ordered a low profile heat sink for it. But since I see you were able to get a beefier one on there I may do the same as well.
@Will_Bx_NYC_718..Sup homie? after you convinced me to get the upgrade and having watched CJ’s video, I ordered a 4TB SSD & 4 heat sink options 😅 bcuz I don’t know which one is gonna fit best. Since I only had my Ally X for 2 days, I don’t have much to copy over. I didn’t want to bring everything over from the cloud. Wish me luck. I should have all the items delivered tomorrow 🤞 - 1Love
@@FoyBoy4 the SSD you installed will be blank, you need to install the operating system. The short answer is yes because you removed the SSD that comes with everything pre-installed.
I’ll say one thing. Take the thermal pad off the battery harness. The purpose of a thermal pad or paste is to transfer heat. So you may be running the risk of concentrating heat to those wires. I’m sure they’re only 20g-24g wires so the outer insulation is going to be small and have far less heat protection.
I recommend you simply wrap the battery wires with a small amount of electrical tape. Placing a pad on top of the heatsink reduces airflow, and efficiency of the heatsink.
You don't need to clone this. If you are using a fresh drive and don't care about the data on it ROG bios has an option to download/install everything via wifi cloud. It's handy!
Bro if ur really into upgrades then I might suggest for you to replace your cpu thermal paste with PTM790 pad or you could get into much challenging such as putting in liquid metal but take precautions first to avoid any damage to your ally x. Love your vid keep posting Rog ally content for games and upgrades.
I don't recommend breaking anything but as long as there isn't a warranty sticker broken over any of the screws nobody will know (just switch back to original SSd if you need to RMA). I am assuming there isn't one since nobody mentions it.
It doesn't void the warranty. The warranty is upon each individual component inside the device. This is very similar to a desktop PC. If you break the motherboard when swapping the drives, then your warranty on the motherboard is void. If you break the battery connector when unplugging it, then the warranty on your battery or motherboard (depending on which side of plug is broken) is void. And so on. BTW, I sent my OG Ally in with an upgraded SSD installed, in for RMA for the infamous SD Card failure. Only negative is they wiped my SSD (factory reset).
@@kewlztertc5386 While I get what you're saying and appreciate that kind of warranty, it really doesn't mean jack if they don't honor it. But I haven't had an Asus product in ages or really had issues with the ones I had so can't comment on that experience aside of all the ally drama.

I went on here to see if the top left and top right screws on the back were also captive like the bottom middle screw. It seems that yours isn’t and I’m pretty sure every model only has the captive screw on the bottom middle on the back however, the other day I tried removing the back plate to take a look at my new X and for some reason, the top left and top right screw didn’t want to come out. I didn’t want to strip the screws so I stopped after a few tries, but it was clear that the top left and top right didn’t wanna come out when I held the console, and the other screws fell out. I also on the previous model and with the previous model as everyone knows the only captive screw was the bottom middle to which I’m sure is the same with the Allie X however, for some reason, mine left and right top don’t want to come out. This is stressing me out any help I’d appreciate it
Hi I have a couple of questions. I just bought the rog ally X still in the box haven’t opened it yet. Since I haven’t played with it. I want to install a 4 tb. Do I still need to clone the 4 tb hard drive or can I just install it like that since I haven’t played with it yet?
@TwistsifyTV there are some comments further up suggesting that if the ally is new that you can download the bios from the cloud without the need to clone. And it was confirmed. OP only cloned because he had games on there too...
This is due to how manufacturers represent their storage. Unfortunately this is consistent with all manufacturers. One kilobyte is equal to 1024 bytes, but manufacturers use 1000 to show their storage. This would make 4TB (according to them). There is four steps that would take you from bytes to terabytes. Bytes -> Kilobytes -> Megabytes -> Gigabytes -> Terabytes That would be 4 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000. Which is 4,000,000,000,000 (4 Trillion). When taking this 4,000,000,000,000 and dividing it by 1024 four times, you end up with ~3.637 Terabytes. Any 4TB drive you buy will have the same issue.
Note to all sd card doesn't work factory defect with overheating inside the reader socket not worth anything no point in investing in rog ally upgrades just buy a beelink mini PC for the same price

ok as a new player on pc if it's right out the box, no need for the cloning right ?
If you change the ssd before you ever turn it on do you still have to do the recovery part?

I have just a little under 10 TB in my device. It was worth every penny.
Can you explain what exactly having a lot of storage on your SSD does to your device? Does it make it faster, less latency?
@ it doesn’t do anything but give you more storage! I travel a lot. I’m never home so I need that storage.!
I’ve had a 4tb crucial P3 on my Onexplayer device without a heatsink and my drive temps don’t go above 65°C….
I was actually wondering if I went with 4tb and no heat sink if that would be okay
@@tentrey The p3 plus runs cooler than most so you could, a 990 pro would need a heatsink

Did the same thing to mine, and I love it. My console might not turn on for a while lol

That's an option, but I like most people already had games on my drive and settings.
This is what I did.
Thanks for the tip! I’m starting fresh so I’ll just install the ssd then download & install everything from the cloud.
You can just use balena etcher to clone it
Great video, The Power Connecter Scars me, could i just unplug the Battery cable from Battery its self ,instead of the Fragile Connector ????

Love the mini keyboard but that specific model doesn't have bluetooth. The problem with that is the RF dongle will interfere with your wifi connection
I don't understand one thing, what about warranty? Everybody speaks about changing the SSD card right out of the box. Doesn't that void the warranty??
I don't recommend breaking anything but as long as there isn't a warranty sticker broken over any of the screws nobody will know (just switch back to original SSd if you need to RMA). I am assuming there isn't one since nobody mentions it.
No it doesn’t, at least in the US. Of course if you break something while doing so, it’s not going to be covered though.
@Sanuske4 warranty stickers are illegal btw

Thx for a great video! Plz keep ‘em coming for the ROG setup, apps & emulation. 🌷
In theory i could use an ssd with built-in heatsink vs the way you did it right? 4tb ssd plus a shiney 2tb micro would def be beafy af
what is the type of screw driver i need will go to hardware store to get today to open case and for the ssd screw ?
What's the name of the 1 TB micro SD card
Kingston canvas go plus microsd card, but I use a Sandisk 1.5 TB microSD card that works perfectly too if you want a bit more storage.

What cloning software are you using`
Macrium Reflect
Those ribbon cables and their flimsy clips scare the crap out of me and my ogre fingers..
Are you able to add an 8tb ssd?
Yeah, the x goes up to 8.
If you can afford an 8tb SSD, yes
Damn son. Ya aim is good. Is there any aim assit there?. I suck on joystick
lol using a thermal pad to isolate the heat. Just read that again mate, you are even passing more heat to those cables , they will melt
