- He has been as close to flawless as a defender that I have seen over the last five years.

Victor does everything perfectly that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet, the best defenseman I have ever seen in person.
He is without a doubt the Lidstrom of his generation... And he’s still young and in the middle of his prime. He has a legitimate shot at being one of the greatest to ever play the position because he is showing no signs of slowing down.
Thats crazy. As good as Hedman is he is no Lidtsrom. He is more of his generation Chara than Lidstrom.
@@vmi4172 How about now? 2 cup rings
@@vmi4172 chara?! FOH lol.
Its ridiculous how well he skates and moves at 6'6. Some of the plays he makes, you'd think he's a shifty 6'0 forward. Blows me away every time I watch him
The Lidstrom comparison when he was drafted seems to be pretty close this far into his career.
Really if Vic was as durable as nic then it would be even more so but he’s definitely the closest thing to nick right now
peak skill? sure. But he has a long way to go to match Lidstrom career wise. What made Lidstrom so special was that he maintained being the best dman in the NHL for over a decade.
Favorite player for years. Just a beast on both ends of the ice.
Hedman in my opinion, is the best all around defenseman in NHL, period.
@Scotland1908
Lay off the pipe, you crackhead.
@Scotland1908 hedman shows up in the playoffs when will the leafs show up in the playoffs
As a Finn it hurts to say this, but he is without a doubt the best defense man in NHL. I love the guy!
Best defenseman in the NHL, no bias.
Other than Cody Ceci of course...
@Scotland1908 bad take, without this past postseason he's still an elite playoff performer.
EDIT: Also, 10 goals, 22 pts is questionable for conn smythe? there are always 2-4 players in contention for playoff mvp every season.
@Scotland1908 so 2 games defines his 100+ game playoff career? He's literally 2nd among ALL defensemen in playoff points since entering the league, that's elite you dumb fuck. Let's see toronto make it past the first round for once.
@Scotland1908 ah yes a leafs fan, gotta love your elite defensemen...
@Scotland1908 he wasn't 100% against Columbus, and when he was healthy he played well in the 2018 run and was fantastic in 2016 and 2015's deep runs. Idk what you're talking about.
Very consistent player. Gets his job done and can lead the defense and power play. All you can ask for. Stepped up in the playoffs finally and it paid off for him. Could propel him for a breakout season you never know.
he is really damn good. he took Karlsonn's crown and running with it.
All around best dman in the league been saying this for years, so glad he’s recently getting that nation wide recognition
After these playoffs I now think he’s the best defenseman in the league
Hedman is always a pleasure to watch. About as perfect an all-around defenseman can get.
I moved to the tampa bay area when I was a kid. I grew up watching Lightning hockey. It's been an amazing ride these last 20 years. We've had some world class players and personnel. We have a beautiful hockey ring, amazing ownership and great management. Top 3 coach in all of hockey and the best team from the ground up. Starts with our drafting and developing of players. Hedman has been the best DMAN in hockey since 2015. I know other players scored more but I dont base my voting for best DMAN on points. I base it on how hard they are to play against and how well they dominant the leagues best players night in and night out. The top 3 DMEN I've personally witnessed the last 10-15 years. Nicholas Lindstrom, Zdeno Chara and Victor Hedman. Sure other players have flashes of brilliance but they never seem to sustain it. These 3 have. Honorable mentions Chris Pronger, Shea Weber, Duncan Keith and, Drew Doughty. ( I never considered Karllson because he only had 3-4 years of top tier hockey in my eyes)
Nicholas Lindstrom....damn! Where did he play?
@@halarmad auto correct my dude lol lidstrom
Rock on Brotha.
He's so much more than point and offense. Probably the best defenseman since Lidstrom. It's safe to say he's the best right now.
He didn’t score a goal in the round robin so it should still count
Plus they only had 25 games which less than the last time that he went to the finals.
@@SvanMagic And their opponents were Philly, Washington, and Boston, not teams with significant flaws like Arizona or Minnesota
Interesting that many of the best D are Swedish, from Lidström, Erik Karlsson, Hedman and maybe Rasmus Dahlin in a couple of yours. A reason could be that the young players get a very good education as defensive from about 12-14 years old. Lidström had Salming as his favorite
I think part of the explanation is that being a defenseman is seen as "cooler" here than in North America.
So while most of the top Scandinavian talents prefer to be forwards, more of them voluntarily go defender/goalkeeper than in the US or Canada.
I strongly believe he's been the best dman in the league for quite a while now, and rightfully some people are finally seeing it. A big bodied dman who can skate? Play excellent defense AND contribute offensively? He's in a tier of his own
Hedman is a full tier (at least) above every other defenseman in the league. I honestly believe he may go down as one of the 3 best of all time. His numbers are outstanding, but it's stuff not in the numbers that make you just start jaw dropping. He's playing top pair, against the other team's top forwards. And he is so good, they don't give him their best RHD to do this with. He shuts down the top lines in the NHL with borderline AHL defensemen. Think about his last few years. His partners have been a 3 years over the hill Dan Girardi (who nobody would sign after his contract expired), Jan Rutta, and Zack Boggosion. Heck, he played with Luke Schenn these playoffs as well. You can argue they are serviceable, and that's fine. You want to argue with me that those guys are bottom pair guys, I think it's debatable, but that's fine. But they aren't playing bottom pair. They are playing top pair, and that top pair shuts down other teams. It's unbelievable. Think of the complaints Toronto fans have had about how good they think Reily is. That he is a top tier dman, but just doesn't have help on his pair. Hedman has that issue and is the elite of the elite. Didn't Hedman only allow like 5 goals in the playoffs when he was on the ice this postseason (may have even been less)? Honestly you could just award him the Norris every year for the next 5-6 years right now.
Hedman is the best 100%, franchise player no doubt
As a very bias Lightning fan, it has been a privilege to watch Heddy develop into the league's best blueliner. The pass he made to Cally in the 2015 SCF still remains by biggest proof to those not familiar with his play. Brilliant break down on his career on the statistical front, and the validation that his contract allows for other team members to remain intact.
Tampa reminds me of the 90s Detroit teams. Hedman is to Tampa what Lidstrom was to those Detroit teams.

He was our GM when Hedman was brought in. Makes sense, eh?
Without a doubt the best defense man in the world in my eyes.
Great video Shannon!
Victor is the main reason I love watching Tampa games
Absolutely love this guy on the Lightning, glad he got his Conn Smythe because he really was the backbone of this run! Looking forward to more years of him being the most dependable defenseman on this team, let alone one of the most dependable in the league
I would argue that the backbone of the run was a combination of Hedman, kucherov, and vasilevskiy, but it’s debatable.
Just to think... Tampa offered us their 2nd pic in 09 for luke schenn and brian burke laughed at them... and now they have both.
Great player, does everything right. congrats on your cup Hedman. Well deserved!
thank you THG for putting respect on victor hedman's great name and game!
next can you do a video on brayden point. i think point could become the next bergeron with further development and improvements.
cheers from southern ontario 🍁
Hedman destroyed the Bruins and Stars in the playoff this year
Stars too.
Hedman killed everyone
@@TheHockeyGuy Destroyed the Canadiens lmao
He's a beast, nuff said
He should have won the Norris the last two years also imo
I remember him being amazing in the final against Canada in the World Championship 2017
Best overall d man in the league hands down
I feel like all Lightning stars are really elevated because of the top guys on the team in goal, at center, on the wing and on D. However D is arguably most important and Hedman could be the most important. I think Josi is up there for all around too.
He is a beast
What makes Hedman so good goes beyond your board. His numbers are great, but he conducts himself on the ice by playing well in both ends, being strong, and making the tough plays, that's what sets him apart.
Hedman is the GOAT
Best D in the NHL.
i AGREE!
Always been a solid defender, THE SUPER SWEDES!!
Hedman the modern new age Ray Bourque? Maybe it's the 77 that makes me say that. Respect him a lot.
Lesson is ... if you are going to be a defenseman in hockey ... wear the number 77.
The first time I was most excited to see someone win the cup was watching Ray Bourque winning it.
This year watching my home team win was just as amazing.
As a fantasy guy I take him every year. I know what I'm getting out of him. He might not be the top point scoring d man but he's consistent and probably a top 3 d man in the NHL if not the first
People often forget long great teams take to win the cup. I won't be surprised if the Aves take much longer than most expect.
Best Dman since Lidstrom's era.
Hedman should be in discussion for best player overall, period. He's easily the best defenseman, but he's also gotta be, at worst, a top-5 player overall.
Hehe.. he is my money maker..
Not much I can add.. other that he one of the 'smartest' dman to play or have played the game in my life time.
He can play nasty when needed. He can raise the pace of the game or slow it down.
He is a playmaking forward and a sniper dman.
So long TB has him around and is healthy.. they have a shot at a dynasty.
I like your old mic I think. I feel like your voice is harsher, it’s not you just the mic and the white noise is more noticeable
First ballot HOFER?
He's a great forward
If there was an award for the defensemen with the most points, the voters would probably vote for the Norris differently, and Hedman would likely have got the Norris at least a couple more times. I think someone should start a movement for an art ross for defensemen and a selke for defensemen. I think they are just no brainers at this point.
Should be a offensive defensemen award for sure. The selke exists for forwards, why not do something for offensive defensemen. Something I've wanted for years.
Never heard of him.
He is the closest playstyle of Nicklas Lidstrom for today's era of hockey and that is saying a lot. Listen to Lidstrom himself ua-cam.com/video/w1K5GPVkZ5k/v-deo.html
Respect for Herman, but can we get a John Carlson career breakdown? His numbers and progression are similar to Hedman, even scoring at a higher rate.
I'm sure he's HOF material... I mean you have to score at least 100 goals right? Oh right... you don't anymore (Kevin Lowe).
I wish the isles took him over JT. He is the best defenseman in the league right now and is a first ballet HOF and has won a Norris. Only on the low key though Bc JT was the franchise for the whole time he was there
He’s kinda this generations lidstrom only not nearly as durable and less perfect lol
Hall of Fame?
well on his way no doubt
Yes 100% will be when he retires
First but no one cares
nope
Yup that’s right
I'm the opposite. I think he's overrated and its Tampa's system that makes him a better a player. I honestly think he'd be mediocre if he were on a less stacked team that he currently is in.
