Its an awesome bed and breakfast site now which includes a personal demonstration of the historic foghorn, dinner, and breakfast all out on the Island in the middle of the bay.
And just think, at night that is how ships were informed of where the land was. All night long that engine and compressor would be operating until first light. So much progress and so much simplier.
My wife and I spent the night at this Lighthouse and that dam thing went off every 60 secs!!! Ever try to fall asleep in 60 secs before having a foghorn blow off right below your bedroom window? WOW! What an experience to say the least. If you ever stay there, bring earplugs, earphones, ear wax, and a well insulated helmet if you want to get any sleep!!! lol~ Seriously though, we had a great time at this place and we learned a ton! It was awesome.
Most unit orchestras have a rank of "tuned foghorns", otherwise known as diaphones, as extentions of the diapason rank to provide bass in the pedal division. Some instruments have 32 foot extentions that beat at low CCCCC at 16 Hz per second .
There is. In fact they have another (Active) horn that goes off every 60seconds. We know because on this trip, we rented the room where the fog horn pipe is right out the bedroom window!! 😮seriously, something we’ll never ever forget. Imagine trying to fall asleep in 60 seconds before BBBLLLLLAAAAAHHH!!!! They may have solar too, you can always contact them and confirm. 👍
What sound pressure level does this device generate at 1 meter distance from the source? How far does the audio wave reach under normal fog conditions? (no wind)
Excellent questions!! I know all the bridges in the bay can hear it but in no longer runs regularly. You can contact them directly, I can almost guaranty this guy has the answers. Or anyone there can also probably answer? Wish I knew too!
What bridge is shown at 11:00 (minutes) in this video? Is it the San Rafael bridge seen from the south? I'd like to know the position of this foghorn in relation to area landmarks.
Hey Noe - Thanks for watching and commenting. I believe that is the San Rafael bridge, if you use Google Earth Pro (now free by the way) you can search East Brother Light Station to get an exact pinpoint of its location in reference to the bridge and surrounding landmarks. :-)
Brad Andersohn Great! I really enjoyed your video. There is a UA-cam video over 90 minutes long with the foghorn sounds that I love to hear -- it brings me serenity and mental clarity. Perfect for times when the world around me gets too "jangly." Seeing the apparatus in operation is like going to Bethlehem.
Noe Berengena being able to have an impact on others lives and people we don't even know or may never meet is one of the coolest things about the world wide web and UA-cam. Those of us who use these tools to connect with others just like you and I know exactly what I mean. Way Cool!! I'm humbled and honored to have made your acquaintance Noe, thanks for making my day. BTW - that foghorn in this video went off every minute (60 seconds) and was right outside our bedroom window. You should try to make it to the East Brothers Station and spend the night, it's a real kick! :-)
Well if that's all that comes out of posting this, then it was worth all the time and effort. :-) Now that you know, you should take a trip out there with your favorite girl and do a night over to experience it for yourself. I think you'd enjoy it.
We spent the night there and the "regularly scheduled" fog-horn was right beneath our guest room window. The only downside is that it goes off every 60 seconds. 24 hours a day! Yikes!! lol~
Me too! I wanna go back and stay here again, but this time I'll get the room furthest from the normal foghorn that goes off every 60 seconds. 24/7/365. Our last time we stayed here, the foghorn was right outside our bedroom window!?!? That was CRAZY!!! ALL NIGHT LONG!!! lol~
well this I know there are several videos of east brother, but none as in depth nor an interactive tour where the guests get to ready the foghorn, nor are they as long as this one. I know its a bed and breakfast.
Good Video. I could start that Cat in a skinny minute, having grown up in the age of pony motors starting Cat equipment. They started just like the older Harley-Davidson bikes, but with a rope instead of a kick.
THAT is a natural fact! They worked in any weather and you just had to know what you were doing. Not like today. Anyone can run a new rig. You have to know something to run the old reliable stuff!
this is east brother lightstation, one of only maybe 4 working f type two tone foghorns, or f2t foghorns, the one that blows and then has a lower long tone, the ruuuuuuuuu rooooot sound that is soo famous.
+Chuck Reynolds - I know, the quality of my iPhone back in 2012 was... well lets just say that the Apple device still had a little bit left to be desired!?! lol~ Seriously, sorry about that. It was an awesome experience, and pushing that button would be the coolest for sure! :-)
+Zeroped -totally get it, just noticed I was logged in as my RE Tech Account when I commented. haha~ I know you were making a positive comment and I totally appreciated that, my comment was more of a pro-active comment heading off the pass for the next person that says... "the audio sucks!" lol~ Thx Bro :)
Wonderful! How fun. I would have started the diesel engine withe compressed air in the tanks. Horn is no impressive. I expected to see a huge exponential horn.
That would have been AWESOME if they had a massive diaphone horn on it instead of the liddle horns. That would be heard for miles and miles. READ ALL ABOUT IT LOUDEST EVER DIAPHONE SOUNDED AT EAST BROTHER LIGHTHOUSE. What a humynghsly loud sound that would be
When you're video recording an event, next time please record the subject itself. When you went outside for the horn, you panned the cam at people. Keep the subject in frame, not people. I don't care to see a bunch of people.
Sorry, I’d been drinking earlier. Wasn’t sure what to expect or where to stand. Lol But yes, if I could go back in time, there are 100 other things I would have done to improve this live and spontaneous video. Thanks :)
@@BradAndersohn Oh that is totally understandable. You done better than me if I were drinking. Lol I did like the video, it was pretty cool to watch and learn about how those old fog horns worked back in the day. Thanks for your post!
Capt. Christopher Taylor - we thought is was interesting too considering it was the old school way of warning the ships in the Golden Gate Bay Back in the day. Believe me, we had no idea what to expect?!?! Lol~ What’s funnier is that we spent the night on that lighthouse island and the horn warning sounds every 60 seconds. The horn that sounds was right outside our bedroom window!!!! Really?? Really!! Now you know why we drank!!!! True story :)
I live on a hill in East San Rafael -- Finally (after 10 years) I know why I often hear a foghorn on bright sunny days!

Absolutely fascinating. Loved it. Thanks for uploading.
Thanks for the video in general and thanks for the heads-up regarding the engine noise in particular ;)
great work on the video. Great to see how the system worked

Is there electrical power coming to thisland now? Solar? Could such be used to power the compressor? Thank you.

Both Fascinating and terrifying simultaneously....
@ 10:17 it sounds like a C-Series Thunderbolt siren blower.
I would have liked to have seen the modern setup as well.
"The compressor compresses air" lol
Scott Kuchciak To the casual visitor that may even be too technical.
Half the people in this video look like mindless idiots.

Will that fit in my Honda?
NO hearing protection for anybody! How safe is that around an indoor running Diesel?

Nice History lesson
“It’s easy to handcrank a diesel “… Wow
it is if it has decompression switches
Interesting but could you explain how Swiss Germans also make fog horn sound when they blow their nose ?
