If you listen to first hand interviews by Roberts, (albeit far and few as he is a very private person making him fodder for the media!) he stresses he is not interested in fame and money. “I don’t need much to live in dignity”. He was interested in honing his craft and Bonanza’s producers failed to live up to the promises they made to him when he signed the contract. He was promised stories, scripts and characters wd be well developed. It did not happen. Dortort bought scripts ad hoc from many different writers with little or no quality control. A guest who worked with him closely on several episodes revealed Roberts is a “serious and intelligent man” with a “quick mind” who is “very serious and analytical abt his work”. A crew member (not cast) commented to a reporter that people who ridiculed Roberts did not understand his motivations. He was outspoken and held firmly to his convictions despite the fallouts. Hence this video is so beautifully apt “He won’t back down”. If you’re looking for ego, you need look no further than another cast member who was threatened by goodlooking and popular actors enough to get them written out of the show when they were brought in as potential replacements for Roberts. A little known fact of Roberts’ compassion was when Victor Sen Yung (Hop Sing) died. Despite having a lot less money than his other Bonanza alumni, when Roberts found out Sen Yung had fallen on hard times despite spending 14 years on Bonanza, Roberts quietly paid all his funeral expenses as everyone deserves a “send off with dignity”.

I think he said he regretted his decision I don't think he had anything really against the actors they look like they always got along great
Even after the series was over, PR still kept in contact with Lorene and Michael...he was very upset when LG passed away, and he did the eulogy also.
