  • The wonderful Easton & Amos steam land drainage machine at Westonzoyland Pumping Station, Somerset. This engine was installed in 1861 as part of the network of rhynes, drainage ditches and pumping stations used to drain the Somerset Levels, and is the only surviving engine of its type still in operational condition.
    It is a twin cylinder, condensing steam engine, driving a centrifugal pump through a geared flywheel. Due to the drop in river level since 1861, it is no longer capable of pumping, and the condenser must be fed with a supply of water (hence the Worthington and Simpson duplex steam pump). The original Lancashire boiler built by Fred Danks of Oldbury, Birmingham can be seen, however this is no longer operational, and steam is now provided by a Marshall 'Admiralty' portable boiler that also supplies steam to various other engines on site.
