  • A Vintage Model Steam Ship Pond Launch. This old Model Ship is quite aa nice thing, but the gem is inside it. The standard of manufacture of both the Boiler and Steam Engine is outstanding.

I like how that engine frame is all sheet metal, that alone makes the engine so ingenious in how it saves so much machining!

The soft soldered brass boiler is perfectly safe to use up to 30 PSI.

No wonder the engine intake pipes went then, he was blowing double or triple that through it.

I have just seen your video (2024) and am writing to say that I have built a very similar vee-twin steam engine to yours to my own design, but following an idea from a reprinted very old model steam engine booklet from MAP. In my case, the engine was built that way to reduce its height so as to fit inside my hull. The engine was also fully reversing using Stephenson link motion. Setting the valvegear was a real mind-bending task owing to the reversed rotation of the valvegear crankshaft when compared to the cylinder crankshaft.

That is a beautiful engine and boiler. Both a little unusual but nicely made, and the flathead bolt construction of the boiler gives the impression of an early 1800s steam locomotive. Quite interesting to see!
I do wonder, perhaps the engine was built to a custom design using parts from one (or two) kits? It certainly looks unique, and the designer was very clever - driving the valve gear off the second shaft saves a lot of space!

It looks like someone has spent considerable time making both the engine and boiler which shows.. it is a shame that it is not suitable to be steamed but that is a safety issue as you state. I'm sure that someone will enjoy looking at it once again. That engine looks fantastic and the workmanship shows.

    Very nice steamboat.
The pressure gauge, with the number 2807600, was built in the year about 1900 - 1901.

It's almost heartbreaking to see something as well engineered and well built as this engine and boiler and be told it should just be left on a shelf to look at.
These were built by someone who cared, and the engineering is impressive.

It is not my boat, it belongs to a customer. I do not wish to work on it owing to the age of the thing. It is not of copper and Silver Soldered construction. That is all I have to say about this.

If he really wants to get it to go just around the pond, or on a static display, he might look in to a small, regulated co2 or paintball air tank to power the engine, it could even be plumbed through they boiler, and hidden in the front of the boat.
Might be a neat solution that doesn't involve the dangers of steaming it, or damaging it.

I think you’re right, keep it as it is as a thing of beauty.
Personally not against that type of construction of boiler one of my favourite types as it goes (soft solder riveted )as they proved there worth in days gone. But like you said in today’s world with an inexperienced operator it could be fatal.

Hmm. Looking at that engine makes me wonder if the person who put it together had a neighbour who was part of the Napier Sabre aircraft engine design team. I can just picture two men in a pub,and this engine the result of that. Just 2 cylinders, not 24,but with the gearing and valve connections.......

I was asked to repair a old model boat with old copper boiler that was riveted and soft soldered. The original Boiler had been rated at 90psi, I hydrostatic tested it to 60psi. I then replaced the safety with a Wilesco one that lifted at 25psi and replaced the original petrol blow torch burned with a camping gas butane one. I would have liked to tell the owner to make the model a "Mantle Queen", but having repaired a few other models for him knew he wanted it to operate. The last time I talked to him the model was still working, and had passed a hydro test every two years for the last twenty years.

Regarding the construction of the boiler, assuming the materials are still solid, I would believe it would be safe.
(I am basing my thoughts on the images in the video and and on your comments as an experienced builder.)
That is a good sized boiler. The stresses under pressure would be much higher than on the smaller scale units. That's what makes the engineering so thoughtful and impressive.
    1) Based on the construction, I believe that, unlike most boilers, the solder serves as little more than a gasket. It would be under almost no load whatsoever. All those impressive rings of fasteners are what holds the unit together, with solder applied afterwards simply to seal the gaps.
    2) I didn't notice any seams. Would I be correct in saying that every part was built from tubes or pipe sections. That eliminates a significant source of danger.
This entire boiler was built based on figuring out "What's the worst thing that can happen?" and then building to deal with that event.
I would bet that even if you were to fire this dry, all that would happen is the soft solder would melt out and, with this construction you would only have to re-solder and then fill it with water.

Are you sure that the boiler ends are made of brass? Quite a few older steam boilers had their ends made from cast gunmetal or phosphor bronze and rivetted and soft soldered in. If this is the case then it may be safe to steam it without fear of de-zincification, subject to a successful hydraulic test of course!

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  3 роки тому +2

Yes I do know that some boilers have cast Gunmetal ends, this however this just looks like Brass to me.

Hi I'm not the best silver solderer in the world but pretty good on the mechanical side .. I am busy on a sweat pea loco at the moment and am wondering if an all copper boiler as per original plan but riveted (PROPERLY) and then soft soldered just to make it steam tight would be acceptable in this day and age? (Similar to the boat boiler ) after all thats how boilers were originally made ,riveted and then caulked.. I know this would involve more effort but a fully riveted boiler would certainly look good ..I'm a beginner to boilers so its just an idea .. any thoughts

I see 2 little valves, one on each cylinder that are curious. I didn't hear you mention them in the video. One appears to be adjacent to the steam inlet and the other adjacent to the exhaust. Are they little oilers of some sort or something else, maybe drain cocks? It was also hard to see but I assume there are piston and valve rod packing glands? There also appears to be clamps around the blue cylinder cladding, are they holding the cladding in place? Thank you for making this video!

I have soft soldered, brass boilers dating back to the 1920s which are still fine. If the boat was mine, I'd hydraulic test the boiler up to 80psi, set the SV to lift at 30psi and run it. But it its not mine and I'm not the one who's going to be taking responsibillity for the safety of potential future idiots. I wouldn't touch it for a customer either.

Yes and not only would you go to Jail, you would not pass "GO" and you would not get £200 ....... Now for a more serious answer. If you were to Steam an untested and uncertified Boiler in public and the aforementioned boiler exploded injuring people, or injured anyone in any way, then you would be guilty of Gross Negligence and all that comes with it.
Any club or society would prohibit the use of an untested Boiler . . . . especially if it was like the one in this boat - old, riveted and soft soldered.
