- The film "Montreal" produced for the City of Montreal by Associated Screen News, under the direction of Jack Alexander - bears witness to the city's different aspects (economic, cultural, religious, etc.) as it was at the end of the 1950s. The film shows different views of the metropolis, starting from the St. Lawrence River and the port. You can also see Dominon Square and Downtown Montreal including the Sun Life Building, Sherbrooke and Saint Catherine Streets, and Dorchester Boulevard. Also filmed are the old stock exchange building on Saint François Xavier Street, Mount Royal, la cathédrale Saint-Jacques (Marie-Reine-du-Monde), Saint Joseph's Oratory, Ontario Street, the suburbs, parks including Jeanne Mance, the bathers' pavilion on Saint Helen's Island, Saint Sulpice Seminary, Notre-Dame Street, Place d'Armes, Château Ramezay, City Hall, Place Jacques Cartier, the Bonsecours market and church, the port activities and grain silos, workers exiting the Canadair plant in Ville. Saint Laurent, as well as various summer and winter scenes, showing sports, such as curling and skiing on the mountain. The film also presents cultural activities in the city. We see examples of Montreal night life and scenes with Jacques Normand performing at a cabaret.
Wished i lived there in montreal in 1957
Im born in 1995 but living in 1957 must of been a great life
such a simpler life 💔
La belle piscine c etait ou svp
Île Ste-Hélène
I was born too late 😞
Born in Mtl 1949. Moved away 1n 1982 for economic reasons. The opening scene almost reminds me of a German newsreel from the 30"s. But those were the days. Notice caucasian faces exclusively. A lot different today. Elm trees downtown. Then the Dutch elm disease took over in the mid sixties. Streetcars! I remember riding the Rosemont sreetcar with my grandmother. Also took the streecar to belmont park. I believe Expo 67 was the Climax of Montreal's glory days. The memories remain but the city, as every other city in the world, has changed. For the better or for the worse?... your interpretation I guess.
