Calab using suggestion on nott seems like a slippery slope too me. It would be a shame if someone had messed with calabs head into doing something he really didn't want to do, someone better go tell his parents... oh wait
I love how Caduceus is pretty much highlighting to the others that lying for no reason all the time isn't always the best method. All the situations made worse by the Neins lying he's just swooping in with blunt honesty and the situation gets 100% better for them lol
I'm spending the entire campaing yelling: "WHY. ARE. YOU. LYING?!!!" At least it kind of makes sense for the characters to jump to conclusions some times. Especially Caleb, Jester and Nott.
Funnily enough, I was drawing while listening to the episode, and I actaully didn't realize Sam wasn't the one reding the DnD Beyond ad until I looked up at the screen.
I was listening to the podcast while driving to work and thought "Oh...wow. Sam toned it down this time, weird." Nope...should have Known Sam would never Lol
I started the video and went to read the few first comments as I always do just to semi-spoil myself about jokes and I read this comment and went "Wait what ?" then only realized it wasn't Sam
“STAY ON TASK, WIDOGAST!” is so freaking catchy. Also, the line “You just described every environment that life can manifest” is UNDERRATED. BLESS CAD. That battle was SO stressful.
She gets anxious when theres a lot of ppl. She doesnt like to be the center of attention. Shes a badass but shes also a big teddybear. Her and Molly were bestfriends and she was devastated when she found out he died. Long story short, we know lots abt Yasha u just have to pay attention
Also, to be fair, the blink dogs statistics is that of an adult. This is a baby. Also, a child dogs understanding is also different from a full grown adult humanoid. Which is probably why there are rolls.
He based it on himself. After watching the DM bias the way he ignored Jester's duplicity right in his face and then consistently went after Cad very obviously trying to kill Taliesin's character again....made me think he was being insecure about the character interactions. I was really getting into this campaign until this episode. Matt needs to hire a third party to think and roll for the BBEGs since he can't control his bias, not the first time he has totally ignored duplicity.
I love how people draw group pictures with both Caduceus and Mollymauk. Even though Molly isn't around anymore, he'll always be a part of the Mighty Nein.
You know it's a DND party when "convince him to not harass my clients anymore, but please don't do anything drastic (I swear to the mother, don't kill him or anything)" is heard as "kill the man, kill him now".
I made that mistake as a DM with my first campaign. Local shop owner, Remus Vukić, was being harassed by a competitor. The party not only killed the competitor, they took his shop, stripped it clean and sold it for peanuts to Remus. With absolute impunity thanks to a few very good rolls and a decent chunk of gold to the local law enforcement. What Remus originally said: "guy's a jerk. He keeps scaring my customers"
Rainbow Glitch this was the second time I’ve watched through both campaigns so I remembered more or less after a few seconds of seeing it the second time
Where did fjord find the armor again? It was definitely the first time they were in zedash as it was one of the things he gave to pumat to transfer the enchantment to.... was this at the spider or before then?
I really like when they focus on the map in the big layout. The side map is so tiny I just use it for reference. I can never tell if the map is really cool because of that...
@@VeteranVandal Yeah, exactly. If there is a map, I want to see that map in big detail. I know what the cast looks like, and it's still very easy to read body language and facial expressions when they are smaller on the side in the big layout.
My head cannon is that the Traveler's main form of influence is on travels and journeys. He could influence your destination, your chosen routes, the time of departures, and your rate of travels. This would be how he could help Jester. He would influence the travels of many potential allies so that they will coincidentally converge and meet each other. To help Jester, he coordinated the meeting of Nila, Keg, Shakaste. The chances of bumping into 3 allies in quick succession is astronomically small. It will also account for all of the crazy coincidences in finding Yasha.
In person: we respect that she has to work elsewhere and support her through this In character: but yasha, you leave.... like all the time..... what’s yur deeeeeeeal!?!?!?
I'm working through a huge backlog right now, but as someone who is only up to this point, that character choice feels... poor. It would have worked amazingly with the slow burn development the rest of the cast goes through, feeding little tidbits of information here and there. But, I mean... she's never fucking there. It doesn't work at all. She feels flat and uninteresting because the few times we see her, it's just "I can't tell you anything... and I'm gone, bye." She's a non-entity in every sense of the word. As someone who is more of a recurring guest character than a member of the cast, someone with less depth, but who is more open and interesting would have been a better choice. If all this works super well later on, I wouldn't be surprised. She's clearly a good roleplayer and Matt would no doubt have shit planned for. But man, 34 episodes and like, fucking four full days of content later, and I know shit all about her and don't really care. That's not a great look.
@@CyanMedic part of it is work. Part of it her investing almost no time into the class. This does change, but the void you're experiencing is very much there. Matt will remark on the character soon and Ashley will get more time to dedicate to the show and all the things her friends say about her do come to light. What's sad is the projecting from people like OP of this thread, dressing up what isn't there and crediting someone who is engaging at the most base level with a tapestry of nonsense.
@@CyanMedic it works great, she works hella outside of this so to be a mysterious character with many secrets helps the narrative for when she leaves often. You can only work with what you got.
To be fair Yasha gets interacted with when Ashley isn't there to deal with and remember those things. She wasn't even told that it was Sending until Matt pointed it out later on. Also the fact that Yasha leaving being handled by Matt forced the cast to reveal certain things to Yasha twice. Technically she already met Caduceus for example. I feel that this, even more than not getting to play often, is the worse side effect of Ashley's time commitment issues. The guests often get brought up to speed in character but Yasha, as with Pike before her, is often expected to know things that Ashley just wasn't there to know.
I think this hits something that's been rattling around in my head a bit. I adore Ashley, especially as Pike, but it's been hard to enjoy Yasha. I've heard (could be wrong) that she chose to be shy, distanced personality because she knew that Blindspot would be keeping her away. It sounds like a good plan, but too often it's felt like Yasha herself isn't sure why she's orbiting the M9. I'm excited for Blindspot to run it's course so Yasha can settle into the group like the rest of the personalities have. Aside - this ep has felt like the whole group's a bit fractured. could be my imagination, though.
@@Brion57042 when you say "fractured" what do you mean? Because of Ashley's absence in so many shows or other dynamics as well? I'm asking because on a previous episode when the group kind of ganged up on Nott to pay 1000gp for a stranger (Gustav, Molly's old boss) to be released from jail, it did seem to me like they, especially Sam, was tense or down when they returned from break as they went into break immediately after that scene. I sincerely hope I'm wrong but I've often felt that Tal doesn't care for Sam because of the way he himself and his character at that time, Molly, treated Nott and at times Caleb. At the end of that scene Tal comments how he took the brunt of the payment without acknowledging Nott having just spent 1000gp to his own 400gp. (Which I felt was complete BS) and Beau having 75gp of Molly's money and giving it to Cad AFTER they'd put in money also annoyed the hell out of me. I felt all Molly's money should have gone to release Gustav. I was truly annoyed with Tal (I often am) and Beau in that scene. I struggle separating the fiction from non and I'm aware of that so in my heart I hope they all very much love each other and it really is just excellent role play. Although early on in the season , when Molly pushed Caleb into the wall and tries to act like he's a bad ass, Tal sat there and crossed his arms like he had just done that in real life, with an arrogant smile on his face for far too long in my opinion. I started not to care for Tal during that and it's been hard for me to look past it although I adore Cad and am trying to feel the same about Tal. I'm hoping his treatment of Nott /Sam improve as time progresses. Sorry this comment is so long. 🤍
@@OmANnIe All of that is just acting. It can get a bit confusing if you're not used to it since they will often act in character even when out of character. It's easiest to notice with Laura as she has an accent and it's easier to see now with Tal putting on that gravely voice. But if you look at campaign 1 they interact completely differently. It's also very easy to see when they fall out of character to laugh, it's as if their personality completely shifts for a second (that's them real selves). Also the whole gold thing, the reason they didn't say Nott spent the most money is that Nott had almost 2000 gold while Cad gave away most of his money. I think he gave away the all of his money if I calculated correctly. Essentially, if a poor person gives away 1 thousand dollars it's a lot, but if a billionaire gives away a million dollars it's nothing.
@Squant It seems like Ashley might process things a little slower (I'm the same way which is why I can't do improv) and so is not quite as much in her element in free-form roleplaying. I wouldn't hold that stuff against her, she's having fun regardless
One of my all-time favourite CR lines from C2 is "Well that just ain't gon' stand, now, is it, chérie? You gotta respect peoples' mmmmMMMM...mmmmmmMMMMMmmmmmmmmMommas."
@@olano-n4y Hearing that character after watching the Between the Sheets and knowing that made it all the more fucking brilliant. I mean Orli was a gem as a standalone, but knowing more about Matt made it all the better.
It’s always nice to see a high wisdom character played by a high wisdom person. I miss Molly. A lot. But Cad is incredibly well done. It fits him like a glove. He gets to be not just clever, but wise. And that is amazing with his chilled personality. The fact he made him in only a few days speaks even more to how talented Talesin is.
@@alexkerr3868 beau got salty caleb told her that they should do the mission they came for instead of fooling around and when Caleb was doing small talk with a bartender who "wanted tourist money" she said it. Then Nott repeated on another context. funny shit
Orly is a perfect illustration of Matt's fantastic DMing ability. Fleshed out, multi-faceted, feels real. The tattoos, eyepatch, and bagpipes aren't important to the plot. He didn't have to have a Louisiana accent or a stutter. Didn't have to be a tortle. None of that matters to the story, but it makes for a more engaging and interesting character, which helps make for an engaging and interesting world. And Matt described him very well, too. The texture of the shell, the leatheriness of the skin, the carvings on the eyepatch, the claw scraping the table enough to shave a little wood off it. It's fantastic. It feels like I'm looking at an actual person. Orly also reminds me of the guy who died at the beginning of Treasure Planet, and it feels like we're getting a look into his life before he crashed by the Benbow Inn.
And as a resident of Louisiana I liked hearing the accent and it made me pay a bit more attention to the story for a bit, Matt did such a good job with Orly
at this point beau and and caleb fighting like they do feels like a sibling type bond. oh god edit: "all she does is eat fish and do push ups." bro....if that wasn't intentional....
You can see their friendship develop. First they had these outbursts, then for a long time they tried to make gestures in their own, awkward ways, and now they just casually bicker with each other like siblings. Shows how much they got closer to each other. Also that they're now much more comfortable in each other's company.
I love that Yasha throws shade about the new member. Considering how close they were with Molly, I'd find it really weird if she didn't take any offense and felt like they were just replacing her dead best friend, so I love that Ashley went there
Sooooo much this!! I know there's a metagaming element to folding the new member into the party, but I would have liked it better if there had been a little reluctance to bringing Caduceus along originally. Or even a suggestion of inviting Keg to join them. Yasha instantly being put off by his presence was perfect.
YES! And it’s really really sad that Ashly was not there to even say good bye to Molly... She didn’t get a chance to revenge for him, and she didn’t get a chance to bid farewell.
@@christopherarmstrong8255 My group did this quite well in such a funny way considering our DM told the new player that we would be nice, so after helping us with an encounter we confronted them and the player froze up, but we were jumpy after just pissing off the city so we ended up grappling them dragging them back to camp and tying them up, at one point one of our party members pointed the new players gun at them.
I'd have honestly been happy if they just dropped Ashley and kept Kegg. They'd probably be around atleast the same amount of time and Kegg was more interesting.
Not only that but it's always hard to see how both Molly and mister Clay struggle to do anything useful in battle (at least Caduceus can heal and stuff, unlike Molly)
@@Alekranidos09 a lot of that depends on the rolls too. He gets really good skill check rolls but has had terrible luck in battle. It’s just the nature of the game. In the campaign I’m in My rolls have been a lot like Tal’s it really sucks to not be able to contribute in battle because every attack you throw misses.
@@Alekranidos09 the stereotype of Molly being useless in battle is pretty unfounded really. Once he stopped casting vicious mockery he was a beast, he had the most kills of the mighty nein before his passing.

I think before C1 they tried to put something alive in there (maybe a person) and they came out dead, so it probably has stuck in their mind that putting live things in there isn't a good idea We can only hope someone will point it out to them in the future

Travis is still SOOOOO Grog at heart lol He has the most genuine reactions of anyone at the table IMHO. He always ohhhh's and ahhhhhh's at maps and when people do cool shit. His vibe is awesome.
He really needs to understand his abilities more. Hexblade Curse is to a Hexblade what Rage is to a Barbarian, or Hunter's mark to Ranger. It is critical to making the class useful. Having extra proficiency mod to BOTH attack and damage is huge. It's aggravating watching him never remember to use it
@@CERap22 I disagree. Hexblade's Curse is a once per short / long rest thing. It cannot be moved from target to target. It does not persist for hours on hours. The Warlock equivalent to Hunter's Mark is Hex, but it eats up a spell slot (of which a Warlock only has 2 until 11th level when they get a 3rd). I would personally be using Hex more, but Travis seems to be saving his slots for other kinds of spells like Hunger of Hadar (which he uses to great effect).
@@govirdrauka7116 I agree. Warlock has so many other cool spells that dedicating one of those valuable spell slots ALWAYS for Hex just seems boring. It definitely has it's use, don't get wrong. When there are multiple targets and you can move it around, definitely worth the spell slot. But using Hunger of Hadar was just so awesome. Summon Lesser/Greater Demon is always a cool aesthetic. Warlocks are so much more than Hex and Eldritch Blast.
Im not a hater of any CR player. But Travis and Marisha were so oblivious to what was happening in that fight, it was messed up for everyone else since those two do a lot of damage.
@@shuheihisagi6689 Agreed. The focus should always be on the unconscious characters, and the atmosphere should get serious for the moments when that's happening. I get that it's a game and they're there to have fun, but it can't be fun for *Tal* when they're indifferent to his character's danger.
I agree. I appreciate that Travis and Marisha were having so much fun, but I just felt so bad for Taliesin this episode. Also cause I know what it's like to have your character bleed out and have the other players worry more about a cool spell that doesn't help you at all.
I was stressing for Tal so hard. When Molly died, I didn't think I'd be able to like Deucy but he won me over so fast and I would have been so mad if he had to go through that again
I really love how Ashley probably chose to be a barbarian because Pike and Grog were besties; and how Travis just gets so excited for her ragey shit. Grog lives on through Yasha, I feel
Pretty sure she chose barbarian so she could sit out most conversations the way Grog usually did, at least initially. But she really doesn't seem quite as, uh, into it as the others.
@@BigMikeMcBastard Which is then a big issue when she's not never around at all for the majority f the campaign. Just makes you realise that even when she's thee it doesn't really make any difference. Any confers atom with Yasha is like getting blood from a stone.
@@Noobie2k7why are you spitting on Ashley for having an acting job abroad? Your hate isn't welcome here, neither by fans nor by the cast. These people have been friends for years, and Ashley does come back permanently at a certain point, so your point is moot whatever the way you look at it.
The joy each of them gets when their friends do stuff they used to do is so heartwarming. Whether it's rage for Travis or sneak attack for Liam we're not almost three dozen episodes in and it's still like a new joy to them every time.

I just gotta say, ive been watching critical role since the beginning of C3 and keeping up with it and coming back to watch C2 at the same time, and I’ve become absolutely obsessed with it! It inspired me to gather some of my friends and start playing ourselves, and we just finished our first session today and dude it was so fun! I was DMing and I’m so happy with how it went, the characters they made go together so well and interact in the best ways, and I’m just so thankful for critical role for introducing me to this absolutely amazing game!
I love how Taliesin gets so into his characters. He is such a good actor and you can really see how much he loves this game. Also helps that Cadeuces really speaks to me.
I'm a bit late to this series but, this is an evil party, right? I mean, breaking into a government facility to murder a guy because he's creeping on Jester's mom seems definitely on the evil side of the spectrum - definitely not Lawful either.
@@genxmonk70 this sounds like a very poor understanding of evil and alignment overall. This is a chaotic party. Most on the neutral spectrum. Evil parties don't go around going out of their way to help citizens or people. They just don't give much stock towards the law generally.
From what my DM told me, alignment doesn’t have much importance in 5e. I’ve only encountered a handful of times where my DM asked us what our alignment is for some magical items and spells. And being Lawful doesn’t have to be in accordance to societal laws, I think. It can be morals and ideals you’ve made yourself. That’s my opinion tho.
4:19:19 two dads and a wine aunt lose control of their three chaos children due to divine intervention from the all-knowing god of mischief Matt Mercer
Matt's improv are both amazing and facepalm inducing. The Hellish Rebuke hitting Caduceus was bs, removing the player from combat for no reason. I can't imagine the frustration if for the entire combat you character didn't do anything but death saving throws, because he was being focused and the one time he would have had a turn, the DM pulls a garbage improv, making you take 11 damage.
That was a roller coaster of emotions...the anxiety of it maybe not working, then the gradual high and excitement of her success, and the deep plumet down when the poor guy asked her out and memorized her name- how does Matt make me feel bad for an NPC whoes name I've already forgotten??
Being from New Orleans and just getting to this point this is one of the best cajun accents I've seen. I agree with Travis this tortle must be protected at all costs.
This feels like I've got 1 or 2 more corners to round and I'll have finally caught up! I can't wait to plug into the community on social media, watching the show live on Twitch, and start seeing more of the fan art aside from what makes it into the scrawl at the end. I'm happy I've managed to avoid most spoilers through both campaigns up to this point. The only one I couldn't avoid was Molly's passing, as I accidentally saw the animated opening of campaign 2 at some point. Love this show!
Yeah, I think its impossible to avoid being spoiled about Molly. But, it does leave a lot of dread, because often there is no reference to When exactly he dies so it could be literally any time.
Matt incorrectly made him take Whelmed damage twice in one round (when the elemental attacked Jester then at the top of Cad's turn.) He shouldn't have lost consciousness because he shouldn't have taken damage when Jester got attacked
@@Dave_L913 that was probably just a mistake on Matt's part, which I get. My panic actually starts earlier than that though, when Caduceus first gets engulfed by the water elemental. Taliesin having that "not again" look on his face actually seems to happen every battle from this point onward.
@@DieKao Its understandably frustrating to not be able to do anything for several rounds AND be at risk at losing yet another character within just a few weeks. Its part of the game, but understandable. That's super rude and unfair thing to say.

No Ram sure is, revealed later in the campaign it’s pretty cool, the cast literally sit for 20 minutes after the episode Ends just going what the fuck and asking questions
There’s so much going on here, some beautiful interactions between the cast. Marisha’s look at Liam when he’s asking about casting 2x spells at different levels. And just Ashley… who is clearly exhausted from travelling is trying so hard and is, as always, perfect.
The funny thing is fireball isn't even THAT powerful. I mean it's great at level 5, but it averages about 24 damage (only 12 if they save!). The reason it's so hyped up through it the thematics of it all. It's a massive explosion the size of a house, how cool is that?
@@trapical For the level of the spell, it's pretty damn powerful. That's 24 average damage on multiple targets in a large AoE. If that hits just two enemies your looking at at least 36 guaranteed damage on average.

I'm spending the entire campaing yelling: "WHY. ARE. YOU. LYING?!!!" At least it kind of makes sense for the characters to jump to conclusions some times. Especially Caleb, Jester and Nott.
They’re not lying for no reason. Caduceus doesn’t know why they felt like lying is the way to go. His baggage or reasoning isn’t like his.

Long story short, we know lots abt Yasha u just have to pay attention
Fun fact, Blink Dogs can perfectly understand Sylvan, so Caleb & Cadeuceus should be able to flawlessly communicate with Nugget
In one direction, yes. They won't get any answers.
Jumpstick 94 yeah but still he could learn faster
Gaawachan Caduceus can only communicate with Beasts & Plants. Nugget is Fey
Also, to be fair, the blink dogs statistics is that of an adult. This is a baby. Also, a child dogs understanding is also different from a full grown adult humanoid. Which is probably why there are rolls.
I do find it odd though that while blink dogs can, displacer beasts cant, despite the similar origins.
I've never met Matt in real life so I have no idea how he based the insecure dock guy off of me
Me too!!!

I love how Ashley's trying to play a secretive, mysterious character, and all her RL friends are like, "fuck that, tell me everything! No secrets!"
In person: we respect that she has to work elsewhere and support her through this
In character: but yasha, you leave.... like all the time..... what’s yur deeeeeeeal!?!?!?
@@CyanMedic with time, all will be revealed
Yasha is one of my top 2 favorite characters in the up to date story
"OMG did you get my messages!"
Oh Jester, sweetie... Yasha is the personification of Left On Seen.
Can we talk about how Matt handed Orly’s stutter? Like that’s just excellent character and acting right there

Man I’m liking Warlock abilities more and more, very cool flair.
That and Travis’ reactions make combat so fun.
Travis is still SOOOOO Grog at heart lol He has the most genuine reactions of anyone at the table IMHO. He always ohhhh's and ahhhhhh's at maps and when people do cool shit. His vibe is awesome.
@@trautsj I love the fact he is basically a really damn big 12 year old
He really needs to understand his abilities more.

@@shuheihisagi6689 Yeah totally. It was kinda rude and also not immersive considering their friends are about to die

I'm a bit late to this series but, this is an evil party, right? I mean, breaking into a government facility to murder a guy because he's creeping on Jester's mom seems definitely on the evil side of the spectrum - definitely not Lawful either.
@@genxmonk70 on Talks Machina Travis always called Fjord lawful good, even at this point when uhhhhhh ya sure bud? It became a bit of a joke.

@@Exaltable Alignments all bullshit anyway and no one agrees on their meanings.
From what my DM told me, alignment doesn’t have much importance in 5e. I’ve only encountered a handful of times where my DM asked us what our alignment is for some magical items and spells.

@@VitaNewbo This, but somebody actually did connect Molly's death to Laura and Travis' parental leave. So once they left, I knew his time was coming
Taliesin sweating the entire fight got me in a big panic.
