  • Aerogel has extraordinary properties but it can be tough to work with. This video looks at modifying aerogels to take advantage of their unique characteristics.

Thanks to Dr. Steven Jones and Dr. Mihail Petkov at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory
And thanks to FLIR for loaning us the awesome high definition thermal camera. The footage is amazing! www.flir.com
Aerogel’s extraordinary properties are due in large part to its structure. Aerogel is a solid but on the nanoscale it has a mesh or sponge-like structure. The struts of this structure are nanoscale, as are the pores at around 20nm across. This makes silica aerogel incredibly light (it was once the lightest solid but has now been superseded by graphene aerogel), transparent and adsorbent.
An ice-cube sized piece of aerogel has an internal surface area roughly equal to half a football field. Aerogel is used in high end museum cases to regulate humidity. Plus it helps maintain the vacuum on the Mars Insight seismometers - it adsorbs moisture and other outgassed volatiles that come from the spacecraft itself. Proposed uses include as a physical insecticide by ‘drying out insects’ reducing the need for chemical and toxic pesticides.

Because it's inventor was so apprehensive about reveling Starlites composition, he took his formula to the grave. In 2018 a youtuber, attempting to recreate Starlite and came very close to doing so by using only flour, sugar borax and cornstarch. I attempted this myself and was surprised to find it actually worked! Once mixed, it can be formed and it hardens as it drys.

@ChaiSpicedD The thing is: Insulation and water repelling works both ways. So the body heat and sweat of the fireman can also become a problem. That being said, I could imagine that those kind of suits can be used for short durations in extreme situations. Most likely not with a wet gel, but a composite of aerogel and fiber, as the paste could fall off and some composites are already quite flexible.
But, all of that is more like an idea for the far future. Right now these aerogels are quite expensive to produce and mostly labscale and rarely in industrial use (NASA, Mars Rover and such).

would it be possible to use aerogel instead of precious metals in catalytic converters due to their highly absorbent capabilities or does it only work with liquid?

Can you skinnydip or just swim in lava without being damaged as aerogel can be an excellent insulator and hydrophobic (Im assuming lava behaves like water but is just extremely hot)

a surfactant maybe? I was thinking there would be something (maybe organic) that would dissolve / help peel it off but you probably wouldn't want any organic solvent on your skin
      scrubbing could be effective too
I'm surprised he didn;t cover this in the vid

I think at this point the internet has made the idea of having to wake up early, get ready and go to a physical building and having to listen to a lecture from a person obsolete when whatever you want or need to learn is just one click away. For example Science I have learned much more on youtube then I ever did in my classrooms
