I had only planned to remove the one, but ended up having to remove them all. Thanks for this. Never in a million years would I have thought to do this. (Especially on drilling two holes into the ignition cylinder to get the roll pins out). Put it back together and it started up. Part of me is still in disbelief it worked.
By the way, when I first did this I just took out a few wafers. Then the same thing happened again a few months later, so I took them all out. Probably better to remove them all from the beginning. Only thing is, the key will now fall out while driving - but it's no issue.

Thanks For Your Video It Helped Me Fix The SAME PROBLEM AND I SEARCH EVERYWHERE A YEAR AGO AND COULDN’T FIND ANY VIDEO SUCH AS YOUR THANKS AGAIN MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!
My sheer bolts would not come out or turn on my ‘06 CRV. I found out that you can leave them alone and by unscrewing the plastic around the ignition cylinder you can access the pin. The pin holding the lock cylinder to the housing did not want to come out... I drilled 2 holes (one hole in front and one behind the pin) and when all else failed I used a grinder to grind down a pair of needle nose pliers to fit. After many attempts the pen finally was pulled free. What I found out in the process is that you can drill one hole to the right of the pen toward the and then go ahead and drill another hole another hole to the right of that hole and slide remove the lock cylinder with the pen still in the cylinder. Makes it quick and easy. Reason being is that you do not need to use the pen when placing the lock cylinder back. As the cylinder will be held in with the plastic when the 4 screws are placed back and work perfectly... I bought a replacement lock cylinder (with 2 keys) off of Amazon for $18. It worked great. Before I used it, I tried the method in some videos of removing and pulling whatever pen was stuck in the out position and reusing the same cylinder. However I had no luck with that, at all. I’d say try that first cannot hurt, might have better luck. Also I’d say if you can use a chisel or dremel and remove the sheer pens easily then go for it. If you can drill one hole and remove the pin holding the lock cylinder, then try it. Or you can just not fool with any of that drill the holes needed to slide the cylinder out and fix or replace the cylinder and slide it all back in, try the key and then replace the plastic and go on with your day. (At least this is my experience with my CRV). I thought I needed the locking pen (so I took extra time to remove it (just in case), but when I was able to replace the cylinder without reinstalling and have everything work perfectly fine (as if it was installed) I wanted to spread the word. Lastly always best to disconnect the negative battery terminal as you do not want to trigger the airbag by pulling out a connector. Peace. :)
Fantastic video, thank you bro, just saved me a ton of $$$. Up and running in 1.5 hrs...was able to get a dremel cutting wheel on top of those headless bolts and make a flathead groove.
Finally got the ignition cylinder to come out for my 04 Pilot. There is a small black cotter pin on the backside closer to the dashboard above two screw holes. Helped me to just take the entire assembly off. Screwdriver and hammer to remove the two sheer bolts was easy for me.
Great video but I'll add this.. The only split wafer that should be removed or replaced is the one that was sticking out of the plug. I think the locksmith meant to remove the wafers, BUT then to replace them with new ones. Since one is worn out or damaged, others might start to do the same. The pins (in this case split wafers) in a lock, are what hold the key in the cylinder when it is turned. I used to be a locksmith too. It's those split wafers that are usually the problem. My daughter's car, driver side door lock also couldn't turn. One wafer was the problem. I only took out the wafer that was sticking out and left the others in.
Yes, you’re right. I tried only taking out the bad one the first time. But it only lasted a couple months and then happened again. So then I took them all out. But you’re right, the key can come out while it is running now.
Thanks for tutorial! I followed the steps for my Odyssey, and the key turns outside of the car in the housing but once installed it won't turn. Would this be due to something in the ignition cylinder?
Some people having the same issue have mentioned some kind of antitheft lock mechanism inside the cilinder that might need to be pushed back before sliding the lock back in.
Hey thanks for the video it’s been really helpful I’m just having issues like you said on that last screw in the back, I can’t seem to get it to loosen. Do you have any tips or ideas for getting it out I feel have exaughsted all my ideas. Thanks again!
You rock!!! Thank you! I'm going to go try this right now. Even if I want to put it back to new at least I'll be able to drive it to the locksmith instead of getting it towed.
Just got it done on my 07 Fit... 2:45, but at least 1 hr of that was spent staring at the parts to understand how it works (satisfying my OCD urges👀). Really not a tough job at all. I live 3 hrs from a dealership, 1.5 hrs to the nearest locksmith, so this saved me a huge pile of hassle! Thanks again for the inspiration!!!

Great video…. Working on a 2005 Honda Odyssey, I followed all the steps… you forgot to mention the place pin holding the ignition in place. I did everything exactly how you show it and the key turned and the wheel unlock but it became locked again after I started to hook everything back up, and now I can’t get the ignition to turn over again. I’ll appreciate your help thank u you.
This was a great video with fantastic advice that worked perfectly. I needed to remove 3 tumbler pins to get back to working order. The one screw was a bear to get to but thankfully just finger tight. Thanks!
My 2 cents!!!!!!! 1st I want to thank U for this video!!!!!! My story is my 2005 surburban went in the shop the Monday after Christmas. Still waiting for it now smh I have a 2000 Acura tl. Everything was fine until Thursday night I believe it was, my fiancé said the ignition wouldn't turn over. Im thinking I'm going out to wiggle the steering wheel and start it up, nope not this time smh. I messed with it for 2 days still nothing so I found a video and it said the steering wheel lock assembly was bad so I took it off. I was happy to get it off because those 2 screws that hold the assembly to the steering wheel shaft is in an awkward spot and the video I saw the guy used a punch and a hammer to get it out smh I tried that!!! Fuck that get an extractor tool kit and a drill trust me!!!! I had both already so that was a blessing. Anyway I got it out and the bolts came out easier than I thought. So I have the whole assembly out and its Saturday 530pm and the dealership close at 6 and opened again Monday morning. Had to wait until Monday only to call the Honda dealership and Acura dealership for both of them to tell me the part is DISCONTINUED!!!!!! U know how I'm feeling now smh. So Im looking on amazon and ebay and Im not happy with the search bc on ebay they were all used and I didn't want to get a used part and go thru the same thing and on amazon the part number just wouldn't come up for the Acura. The video I saw was a few yrs old but damn this guy had a new part from the dealership smh. Anyway I found this video hold on no wait I called a lock smith Sat night he was talking about 270+ dollars and he acted like he couldn't understand what U was trying to get him to do which was break the lock cylinders. I got that from the comment section of that video. A guy did that but he said it was $100. But anyway they didn't come I called again yesterday and they said they would come around 4 its was 10am then smh so I found this video and I did exactly what U did and I did have a little screw fall out that was more like a pin its gold it has a head like a nail but the bottom part is not threaded and its not long maybe 3 or 4 centimeters if that but it fell out and I couldn't pin point exactly where it came from but its still on the table lol kinda like putting something together and still have screws left over lol whatever it didn't effect anything and I took all if the waffers tumblers or whatever they are ALL out!!!!! Put it back connected it to the car to see if it would turn over and it did. I felt like a master mechanic/ locksmith lol it felt good!!!! Then around 5 pm I get a call from the locksmith and I told him I was good I fixed it and he asked me what did I do and I told him and he said well U did all off the work good job. Thanks again for this video!!! I told my son God gave me hands to work with and a brain to understand all I have to do is put the effort in and this 13 yo son of mines said yea and he gave U a youtube video to look too!!!!! Lmao
Hi! I did this today on my 06 Ridgeline, by removing 1 wafer, but I also experienced problems when putting the ignition/sylinder back in. For some reason the key won't turn, and there are no lights coming on on the dashboard. Sadly, I cannot remove the pin again, since my tools broke while prying it out the first time. Did you ever figure out what the reason was, why the ignition wouldn't turn once you put it back in? I'm suspecting the steering wheel lock, but cannot say for sure.
It is possible to put the tumbler in upside down. Try taking the pin out (get new tools?) and flipping it over. I had to do that here in the video: ua-cam.com/video/Gcb2muIbDzY/v-deo.html
@@TheQuarterAcreHomestead Hi, thanks for your reply. I got it out again. No, the tumbler is inserted just as it should. If you mean the brass colored thing on top of the cylinder housing. I've tried removing and inserting the key housing multiple times, but the key doesn't turn once it's inserted. Wiggeling the steering wheel makes no difference either. It's as if the car doesn't recognize the key anylonger. The dashboard lights are off, even if the key is inserted.
@@JesusWins Hi! I figured out what it was. There's a lock mechanism on the inside of the lock assembly/housing, facing towards the steering column. Sometimes if the lock cylinder is pulled out a bit to fast, the lock in the column will activate. The only way to disengage it, is to remove the assembly and press the lock mechanism back inside. (If that makes any sense). It's an anti theft feature.
@@Aqollo Good evening. I am having the same problem. I have done everything in the video but can’t get the ignition to turn when I put it back in. Can you please explain where’s the lock mechanism is that you’re talking about. Thank you.
Finally got the four screws out, had to buy a couple of offset screwdrivers to get that one. The black piece did slide right off afterwards. But I cannot "just pull the ignition tumbler out" in any way. After all the work that one screw took it's all I can do to not go on a Godzilla-style rampage on my entire steering column and everything close to it.
@@TheQuarterAcreHomesteadit's a '09 CRV, I watched another video showing where the pin is, got it out, and the tumbler came right out. But now I have to figure out how to get the pin in the back of the tumbler. There's no space to get to it like there was in your car. The guy in the other video drilled a hole through the top and went straight down but that's not an option for me so I guess I'll keep looking.
Hi. Helpful video. I have a question on removing the pins that is locking the tumbler. You mentioned on your video to use a nail to tap it out. How to do it right ? I tried but the nail is not moving it out. Appreciate for your help.
@@lawrencel2544 wow, I don't know. Maybe you will need a new tumbler or switch if you can't get it out. Or take it to a locksmith. Maybe something like this: www.piloteers.org/threads/2003-pilot-ignition-switch-problem-solution.27572/
I took mines out and removed all the pins. My key still will not turn the ignition. The other piece inside the ignition housing seems to be the problem. It will not turn at all.
I'm frustrated. I went through all the steps and removed the one wafer that was stuck. I actually ended up taking out all of the wafers because I want no future problems. I put it all back together and it worked! the ignition turned and I test drove the car. Well now it won't turn again. It's definitely not another wafer because they're all gone. its what's it connects to internally that won't turn and I'm totally stumped. Of course a whole new assembly will fix my problem. But I just can't believe that it worked, and then 10 minutes later a different problem occured? blows my mind
Did you make sure you took all the springs out that are under the wafers? I almost didnt, but lucky one popped out and then it reminded me as to make sure. I had a bit of trouble getting one out, could barely see it in there, but I thought wow if I wouldn't have taken time to make sure all the springs were out then it would have jammed it up again!
My cylinder will not pull out. Anyone have any advice? 2004 Honda Pilot. Great video though. Think maybe I just need to keep wiggling the key until something lines up.
@@TheQuarterAcreHomestead it has a retaining pin holding the cylinder in. Gonna drill it out. Thought it was just a hole until I cleaned dirt out of it & looked at with a flashlight.
It was a small retaining pin located near where the key goes in. It's on the side facing you between the cylinder and the "block of metal". You can't see it but i's in there. I had to use a screwdriver to pry it open enought for the cylinder to slide out without breaking the metal block. I left the pin in and had to smack the cylinder with my hand to get it to snap back in where the retaining pin could still hold it. Seems to be holding ok so far. I also removed all of the tumblers. The key is pretty loose but hasn't fallen out of the cylinder. The electronics in the key fob are still functional so no computer needed to reset anything. Hope this makes sense. Good luck.@@jbrennenkearney
Just take the lock cylinder out by pulling the roll pins take the lock cylinder out pull the Fing wafers and tiny springs out put back together. Slapper all back together and never have this problem again. The transponder in the key is the trick to getting it to start anyway so why f with the stupid never ending failing wafers and the key that is constantly wearing. And yes The stearing wheel still locks when you turn it off and pull the key.You can take your key out while its running too which is very convient at times. I put one full rap of black electric tape at the end of the cuts on the key so that the key doesnt fall out of the lock easily. Just did this today and it works like a champ.
That's great!!
Having this issue right now. Going to give this a shot before replacing the whole assembly
How did it go?
@@TheQuarterAcreHomestead awesome!! Pulled all the waffles out and good to go!!! Thank you
Finally got the ignition cylinder to come out for my 04 Pilot. There is a small black cotter pin on the backside closer to the dashboard above two screw holes. Helped me to just take the entire assembly off. Screwdriver and hammer to remove the two sheer bolts was easy for me.
That's great! Glad it worked.
Roll pin....
Well done sir!!! If it wasn't for this video and my nephew's awesome skills it all saved the day!!!
Glad it helped!!
God bless you my friend I was dreading this job. You made it so much more understandable and possible 🎉
Glad it was helpful!
Gracias a la buena explicación de este hombre puede arreglar mi carro y sin gastar ni un dólar, Dios te bendiga
Thanks for tutorial! I followed the steps for my Odyssey, and the key turns outside of the car in the housing but once installed it won't turn. Would this be due to something in the ignition cylinder?
Hmm, I’m really not sure.
A leatherman tool works best, so you can turn the screw driver at 90 degrees.
Totally worked!!! Almost was calling a locksmith!!
Great!
You unclip that right there, and then move that over there and see that right there.
Yep!
You rock!!!
@andymurray8007 glad it Worked!!
Thank you so much hun. This worked perfect for me. It took me forever but it worked. Thank you so much hun.
You're an ungreedy genius, thank you so very much for sharing your experience, you're one of the God send people, that the world needs. You deserved AAAAA. Peace out.
Nice video. I did not know this style pulls right out with key. That little gold screw in the back is a pain...
Hell yeah thx for the tip my father's pilot is doing the same thing. Came out of Wally World aka - walmart it wouldn't start. So thx for the tip I will give it a shot. God Bless U an ur family.
Let us know how it goes!!
Wow! This video would have came in handy last month. 😭
My Honda pilot 2003 started doing the exact same thing!!!
What goes in first the spring or the metal piece
Great video…. Working on a 2005 Honda Odyssey, I followed all the steps… you forgot to mention the place pin holding the ignition in place. I did everything exactly how you show it and the key turned and the wheel unlock but it became locked again after I started to hook everything back up, and now I can’t get the ignition to turn over again. I’ll appreciate your help thank u you.
I know I am really late but did you figure anything out regarding the place pin?
This was a great video with fantastic advice that worked perfectly. I needed to remove 3 tumbler pins to get back to working order. The one screw was a bear to get to but thankfully just finger tight. Thanks!
Glad this helped you out!
Thanks. The key was just spinning for a min. Had to put it on right I guess. Tytyty
How do you get the actual ignition piece to go back in after taking out the pins ?
Lmao
Glad the video helped and you got it working!
I have everything up to where i pull yhe tumblers out but it wont come out. I tried using the key to help but no go. Mines a 2008 pilot
A few people in the comments here had the same issue. I would read thru the comments and see if someone posted the solution. Good luck!
I love the video thank you so much took all of them out run perfect. Thanks again. Daytona Beach Florida RV
@@Aqollo I think it might be possible that your key needs to be reprogrammed, or maybe try switching the battery in the key fob.
Thank you.
How did the tumbler come out the video left that part out. I can’t get it out
I know this is an old video, but hoping someone can help. I managed to get all the screws undone but can’t get the actual cylinder out. Any tips ?
If the steering wheel is locked before disassembly, will that pose a problem?
That should be fine.
Before remove ignition thambler out do i have to remove some kind pin and what key position
What type of car? Read thru the comments here, some people have found a retaining pin, I think.
The key module I not coming out u said there's something extra to detach in order to pull it out but what is that exactly.
This video just saved me today!!! Thanks so much 👍
Glad it helped!
Right next to the shifter there is a plug. Pop that off then there is a release button to move the shifter.
My key won’t turn and my steering wheel is locked so can’t turn it neither. Would this be a steering lock issue or a tumbler issue?
That sounds like this key issue!
Thank you for this, just saved me a butt load of cash
Glad it helped!
Dude you just saved my ass with this video, many thanks.
OMG, thank you so much. You save my life
Glad it helped!
Hi. Helpful video. I have a question on removing the pins that is locking the tumbler. You mentioned on your video to use a nail to tap it out. How to do it right ? I tried but the nail is not moving it out. Appreciate for your help.
A small nail worked for me. You need something small enough to push the pin out but not get stuck in the hole.
@@TheQuarterAcreHomestead thanks for the fast reply. I am actually working on it now. Is there only one pin that goes through both sides?
@@lawrencel2544 yes, just one pin, it goes all the way through. Any luck?
@@TheQuarterAcreHomestead afraid not. For some reason the pin is so tight and i am afraid to tab it too hard.
@@lawrencel2544 wow, I don't know. Maybe you will need a new tumbler or switch if you can't get it out. Or take it to a locksmith. Maybe something like this: www.piloteers.org/threads/2003-pilot-ignition-switch-problem-solution.27572/
Thank you for this video my brother. 👊👊👊
You're welcome!
How did you guys get the gold screws out!?? Wtf
A leatherman type tool works great. So the screwdriver can be at a 90 to the handle
great job . thanks for all the info.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video. Quick and easy fix. Funny I grew up with vehicles that the key could come out while it was running. So a little nostalgia.
Glad to hear it worked for you! Lots of people say the tumbler won't come out, and I'm not sure why it isn't working for them...
I took mines out and removed all the pins. My key still will not turn the ignition. The other piece inside the ignition housing seems to be the problem. It will not turn at all.
This fixed my issue! Thank you!
That’s great! You’re welcome!
Was your steering wheel lock position befor job
Yes.
I love how you told your family to pray n then the car started
Yes, praise God!
How do you unplug the green ones? I'm stuck.
I think there's a tab you have to squeeze to unlatch them.
What if the ignition cylinder won’t slide out?
Did your car turned on ? I don’t see it on your video
Yes, it did. Still driving it today!
Did this. Turns independently but won't turn once I put it back into the assembly. Help 😥
👍You are awesome. GOD bless you.
I have everything apart but can’t get the tumbler to slide out of ignition assembly
You are a life saver, thank you so much for your video!
Glad it helped! Did you take out the chips on yours?
@@TheQuarterAcreHomestead where can I get the wafer pins for Hyundai i20??
My previous question is referring to 8:10 time stamp of your video.
I know this is a bit older of a video. Can you explain how to release the lever for the top cover. I can't get my switch to push in or slide
I believe you pull the white lever down.
Oh wow, so sorry to hear that! Let us know what solution you come up with.
@@stephaniephibbs3701 Yes, I believe I did. Good idea though!
Immensely helpful thank you
Glad it helped!
What is this trick called?
It doesn't just come right. There is a roll pin that holds it in. You have to get the roll pin out first
Where is it?

My cylinder will not pull out. Anyone have any advice? 2004 Honda Pilot. Great video though. Think maybe I just need to keep wiggling the key until something lines up.
Hmm, I'm not sure. 2004 Honda Pilot is what I have, and it came out no problem.
@@TheQuarterAcreHomestead it has a retaining pin holding the cylinder in. Gonna drill it out. Thought it was just a hole until I cleaned dirt out of it & looked at with a flashlight.
@mitchphotoflix let me know how it goes. I guess someone had mine out before me!
@@paulmitchellphotocould you explain exactly where the pin is? I’m having the same issue.
Ok I’m going to attempt to do this ... my car just left me stranded thank U Jesus I was already home
Let me know how it goes!!

It doesn't just come right. There is a roll pin that holds it in. You have to get the roll pin out first
2011 honda pilot pulled the black plastic off but cannot get the cylinder off help please!!!
I have a problem the pin that hold it in I drill close to pin now I’m srewed
I hope someone will see this and answer.
I have the opposite problem. It works outside of the car but when I get it in it won't turn.
My key won’t go in do you know what can be the problem
Sorry locksmith's but this nightmare is BS AND I FOUND THE CURE. Save yourself a tow and 200 bucks buying new keys blah blah
I did everything as you did but I keep getting the immobilizer light on
