It's been about one month since the wildfires on Lahaina and I just wanted to share some observations about what's happened. It's been interesting to see how we've reacted as locals, particularly on social media. Most of it has been great, but some of it has been not so great.

People DO conspire to do things! Green came out a day later not only stating that he is looking at ways for the state to acquire the land, but that he mentioned "WE want this to be..." So either a meeting was held while bodies were still smoldering OR it's been the plan all along. Either way, people with power conspired! Why do you feel the need to marginalize those who are researching, asking questions, or witnessed the event itself?

A Question That Really Must Be Asked, Exactly How Many Fire Fighters Did "The Oprah" Take Away From Efforts To Save Lahaina? Thousands Of People Died?
Was it one fire fighter? 10 fire fighters? 25 fire fighters? How many Fire Fighters Did She Take Away From Lahaina To Save Her Mansion And Underground Luxury Bunkers? WE NEED A NUMBER. the Maui Fire Department has roughly 200 firefighters working on Maui island. Ordinarily, he said, about 60 to 65 are working at any given time

My grandmother’s office burned down, several friends lost everything they owned, one friend of mine, lost six members of her family. I was boots on the ground as soon as I could on the ninth. Telling everybody to stay away was a mistake. I have never seen a more missmanaged disaster in all of my life. And while I’m empathetic to help us workers at those organizations who genuinely want to help people in charge of some organizations did more to hamper that to help.

Aloha Chris - we had a trip planned for Maui and the mixed messages from so many left us questioning what we should do. We ended up going and changing our itinerary to volunteer and support all the small local businesses. We met several people that were affected directly by the wildfires and then some indirectly affected. It was very heartbreaking to hear their stories but their resilience was so wonderful to see. The amount of teamwork that goes to volunteering their time was amazing to see and be a part of. We will continue to send our love and support to the people of Maui and do our part to help them as best as we can.

Chris my man from my islands of Hawai’i. I have just one advice for you Chris. You need to get involved in your community by serving the people of Hawai’i. Yes, my professional advice is for You to serve in the local government of Hawai’i. You’re a very smart person who have confidence, compassion, communications and coordination that a lot of people don’t have or don’t care. After serving in the Marine Corps for over 21 years and I’m originally from Wahiawa, in Central O’ahu when I see someone with the 4C’s that’s amazing and I’m not kidding. I’m not so young anymore and I’m grateful to have been born, raised and worked in the Islands before I enlisted in the Marine Corps right after high school. From there I’ve been able to see, learn, and accomplish things that I never thought possible. But it’s possible because anything see possible if you have that spirit of Aloha. You have that and the people of Hawai’i and here in the Mainland know this. Semper Fidelis and Ma’lama Pono Chris From SoCal.

Chris, you know I live on Maui, but you may not know that I live in Kihei, which is outside the burn zone.
Maui needed space for the first 2 or 3 weeks to calm the chaos, get fire victims out of communal shelters and into hotels/air bnbs, and to process the shock and overwhelming grief. And we got that space. Now we need South Maui to get tourist traffic to slow the economic bleeding. The situation has been fluid and changing since Sept 8.
My day job is completely dependent on tourism. I'm hurting right now, but I believe the first weeks of space to deal with our disaster was crucial. I and many others used that time and energy to volunteer to help. I've transported relief supplies, I've spent days just listening to victims talk story about their experience, and transporting mainland aid workers to their lodging and workplaces. Not telling you this looking for praise or anything, just many of us couldn't have stepped up to help if we'd been still catering to tourists during the initial few weeks.
But at this point, if we don't get tourism back soon, there's going to be a 2nd disaster. While there's a lot of cash and housing aid our for displaced Maui ohana (as there should be) , there's been nothing for people who still have their homes, but no income. We've been told to apply for disaster unemployment, but it's taking forever to process the applications. I don't know any unemployed who have received a check.
It's hard, but I'm confident we'll got through it (we get em) together.

I am on Maui, was extremely fortunate not to lose my home, but displaced residents are being placed all over the island, many in Kihei and Wailea (many because their kids are in school there) and are now being moved to make way for tourists. There is now a push for tourism in Ka’anapali, and displaced residents are being made to move again. The push for tourism over local people only forces out local people. Maui’s over-dependence on tourism has ensured that local people are having to leave in droves.

@@HelloFromHawaii there really isn’t enough help because the tourism industry has won again over residents’ best interest. Yes, there are educational programs, but without a roof over their heads, these local families will need to move off island. The vacation rentals and time shares have won over the attempt to house residents in these places long term, because the owners are not willing to give up the nightly rates brought in by tourists. The message to bring tourists back so quickly hurt the displaced residents much more than any help it brought.

Excellent video, Chris. I always appreciate your perspective on our home. I wish Hawai'i was more sustainable vs. "tourist dependent". I have worked at places that were very reliant on the tourist dollars, and I used to tell the Mainland owner, "Take care of the locals and they will get you through the hard times." It seems to me that the success of small businesses are more from the local traffic than tourists. Maybe there's a way to help Maui by changing our "Vegas trip plans" and spend the dollars on the Valley Island instead; sort of a "staycation" to help the hurting economy of Maui and support the efforts and people of Lahaina "first hand"...if can. Also, I know SO many people here on the Big Island that have "plenny food stamps, but no mo' money"...they have big hearts and sincerely want to help (hence the donations of bottled water, foodstuffs, etc.) I agree that there definitely needs to be a more organized way to get those heartfelt donations to the people on Maui that need them instead of being "stuck" waiting to be shipped and distributed. It's frustrating trying to help and feeling like your donations have become a "problem" in not getting to the people that need it now (and in the future). Maui is going to need our love and support for a long time as they rebuild. 😢

My heart goes out to family and friends in Lahaina and the Valley Isle
I live on the Westside of Oahu. We have fires frequently. It's possible to become desensitized because 🙌🏼🙌🏼 HFD are able to extinguish the flames. Several months ago a fire started on the edge of DHHL ag lot that I live on. It was the scariest experience because of the 15 mph winds and embers 75' in the air. So I can only imagine the horror of the 85 mph wind causing huge embers to fly😢
The conspiracy theories and finger pointing are causing multitudes to go down the rabbit hole. Negative vibes that is taking a toll. I was appreciative when Tiare Lawrence made a appeal for kindness and to treat each other with aloha.
I just hope that the money collected are distributed to the families that were impacted. That communication issues would be resolved.
What a awesome community that has risen up to care for each other united to rebuild Lahaina❤

Thank you for your honesty and very kind approach. The truth is that certain parts of Maui now look like a war zone.
So many people have suffered and continue to do so. So many "missing" people. So many school-age children "unaccounted for," according to the Dept. Of Education in Hawaii.
So many people are homeless. So many people are mourning!!!
At the same time, the people in Maui have shown extreme kindness and generosity to each other.
There is a questionable "Proclamation" and a strong "police" presence now. Sadness, mistrust, and anger is extremely evident at this time.
Yes, tourism is critical to the economic survival of Maui. But, respect needs to be shown to the people of Maui. Visitors need to show compassion by helping the Maui community via acts of kindness...

If HECO is found liable and goes bankrupt, maybe the state could take over the power system for the state. It would be cheaper for everyone in the long run to not pay a for-profit business. But it’s also true that over the last two centuries the indigenous people of the islands were quite badly treated and taken advantage of by those newcomers who felt they could (and should) take control and make a profit.
It also seems like some of the current local administrators were at the very least seriously inept, arrogant, and indignant that intone of the effected local population should be upset or question them. And what about large land companies, water hoarding, blockades on Front Street, proclamations banning civil participation in planning or historic preservation, long term protection for indigenous property holders, or assistance in returning for the c 20,000 Hawaiians who had to leave entirely and move to Los Vegas. Not to speak of the c 100 Lahaina residents who, even before the fire, could only find shelter under the highway overpass?

What is your definition of alarmist? Isn’t blaming global warming for this tragedy alarmist? Especially if the fire was still going and no known causes because there was no investigation done to determine the cause? Is it not alarmist to shut down anyone not accepting the government narrative as truth when their version of the events are full of holes? You do nothing for humanity by accepting the “official government narrative” and it appears you are the alarmist, by shutting down any opinion that does not conform to your worldly views. Have a nice day.

A couple of significant things here about social media, it can be used for good or destructive reasons.
I've put out a couple of possible solutions on social media, as well as to my politicians. Suggesting things like the usage of rental cars for survivor families of the wildfire. On social media, it was met with a small amount of negative comments. And about a week later, there's an initiative to provide rental car purchases at a lower rate for survivors. I've suggested that the negative posters focus on solutions and the tragedy, than bashing and creating more darkness in this matter.
I've also put out there the possibility of national morning shows to come to Maui, and do their broadcast from there. As that would give a nationwide/global viewership to the island being open and embracing visitors. It's sad that we are entering the time of year where families are going back to school, as that affects tourism.
Although the travel industry (i.e. airlines, hotels, etc . . .) could aggressively advertise that Maui is open, and provide their rate reductions as incentive that they'll offer prior to the start of the vacation season (early Winter).
Also the possibility for vacationers who are here for a week, to take advantage of a Hawaii Tourism incentive to go to Maui for at least a two-night stay, for a reduced rate on air travel and hotel fees. If it's within the same hotel chain, they could waive any additional charges.
Maui needs people to embrace them. Write post that are solution based. Not hateful rhetoric laced with blame and bitterness.
After all, it is Martin Luther King who said "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
Only love, empathy and compassion can bring Lahaina out of its darkest day.

Thank you so much for your very level headed vlog about the Maui fire. I lived on Oahu for many years and still feel connected. I've been watching a lot of the video posts coming out of Maui and Lahaina, including town hall meetings where locals get to speak, and they are clearly, and understandably, traumatized. This sort of huge disaster gets a magnifying glass, rightly so, before and after, made by politicians and state/county/city managers whether by mistake, neglect, or hubris. Certainly a better emergency plan needs to be set up for the future. Locals need to be part of the rebuilding plans. But the number of conspiracy stories, and causes, seem over the top crazy. Space lasers, directed energy weapons, billionaire take over, "science can't explain this..." kind of stuff, which seem to be spreading locally. Understandably people of Maui and traumatized and as you say, will need long term support for what happened. I pray they will get the support they rightly need and Lahaina can be rebuilt. The Maui government failed miserably providing adequate emergency protection to it's Lahaina residents. I don't think there is much debate on that statement. The Maui County government owns that failure. Will HECOs legal situation increase your electric bills on Maui and all the other islands now? Duhh, would be the understatement of 2023. Why did HECO remove utility poles and transformers lying on the ground before fire investigators arrived to physically examine them? Sorta like cops moving bodies at crime scenes before the MEO clears it. Interesting. The best way to have an effective emergency management system is to hire people who actually have some training and experience in the first place well before they are ever offered a position. A Civil Service exam isn't qualification. This was absolutely the case on Maui, totally unqualified and the Director quitting a few days later certainly proves a point. The Maui government still is unable to account for most of it's missing residents Lahaina after almost a month and STILL refuses to say how many children appear to be either missing or were found deceased who could be physically IDd as probably juveniles. You want to stop conspiracy pundits then start with that transparency. The property owner is responsible to clear debris but in this case it's only logical the state would pay for it. Otherwise you'll spend years waiting for many owners to be able to afford to do it on their dime. The state should also take responsibility for all private fire debris, burned out cars etc. and construct either a landfill or examine the legality and ecological concerns about barging it and dumping it at sea. You need to clean slate that part of Lahaina Town destroyed and do it now as quickly as possible to allow property and business owners to decide what their plans will actually be for the future. It would seem to me during this massive clean up phase which will take months it will offer employment in many capacities and skills for the hundreds of Lahaina residents who are now unemployed. You want jobs back in Lahaina? Start with that. It also makes sense the tons of construction materials should be transported from the mainland and not through Honolulu to help defer costs.

Maui government is like any other government & departments. There's good/bad/in-between. They are made of people, many of whom serve the people the best way that they can. The MFD, MPD, ambulance drivers, county workers all do their best. Leadership in the various departments might be long time civil service and others brought in. Some with experience and some without. It also changes with administrations and subsequent department head changes, so it's not a static leadership that it is the same person running the department over the years. It's no better or worse than military leadership, business, or politics, so I'd be a little kinder about the criticisms. The day-to-day civil servants that most meet never determine policies or direction that is determined at higher levels, although they might be the subject matter expects knowing better. The question on HECO moving utility poles and transformers, can be asked but people might not want to know answers. Asking when it was done might be appropriate, as if it was done as quickly as possible for entrance to the area, it might be a SOP. If poles/transformers go down from a tsunami/hurricane, do people say, wait until investigations & forensic information is obtained? Do broken/damage transformers release toxic elements? Is there a separate SOP for lava flows/tsunami/fire/wildfire/accidents/hurricanes? Or do the crews go out and clear areas of fallen poles? Expertise in Emergency/Disaster Recovery/Clean are people, resources, tasks, and priorities management, involving other entities with their own complicated people, tasks, resources, and priorities which they have no control of, only coordination. None of them are subject matter experts of any sub area/tasks. People don't want to read/hear this, but you start burrowing a simple item, there might be more convoluted response the deeper one goes.

Passing a civil service exam for an upper level supervisory emergency management position with NO prior qualifications is complete nonsense. A rookie fireman has more training. The Directors sudden departure the following day for "health reasons" was cowardly. For those in charge; If the aftermath and embers of a good chunk of Lahaina is their "best" effort then I guess the community can bet thankful they weren't any more incompetent. And it's not who is running anything, it's the contingency plans for disasters already in the books, updated when necessary. Maui wildfire response wasn't something out of the blue. Wasn't there a major incident in 2019? The basic SOP, which for emergency preparedness dictates planning from the absolute worse scenario eventually will become public. I would hope it addresses that logic. You have at least 100 dead people, many of them kids. The government still hasn't given a full accounting of children killed. Being kind to the bureaucratic bosses (as opposed to rank & file first responders, there's a difference) isn't deserving of any "kindness". Those downed power poles, lines and transformers weren't active anymore, no longer a risk, and should have been left alone. And HECO wasn't the people who should have made that decision either. The possibility of Criminal Negligence is very real here, it's a crime scene. Comparing this fire to the aftereffects of a tsunami or a hurricane is apples & oranges. On the scale of the toxicity of a transformer in relationship to the rest of the rubble that's a moot point as well. You can conduct separate operations simultaneously, the cause part is separate from effect and other agendas but you needn't do them one at a time either. And you need people in charge to organize and monitor all of it. There are also literally thousands of wildfire experts both government and private contractors all across the western US that would be available for immediate follow-up work, I haven't heard reports of any on scene. Whether intentional or not, moving electric poles and related equipment and disturbing the areas by the only power company in the state and who very likely will go into bankruptcy and reorganization because of lawsuits doesn't do much for trusting their transparency for learning the truth. The worst wildlfire disaster in the country is what they are saying, this investigation goes far beyond the experience of Maui Country officials and the State of Hawaii. Way overdue to bring in the big guns.@@tracyalan7201

I dare you guys to actually look up what those materials aerosalized will do the lungs and brains, especially of fragile people, elders, children, people with disabilities. (It's not like people ever get sick from smoke inhalation.)
Then tell me after that you are happy to wade around in those ashes and hug your kids aferwards. Not to mention those ashes also contain the last earthly remain of a bunch of people. But yeah, go play in that - the ashes of our loved ones. Please continue letting tourist take photos of those ashes for IG and TIKTOK like they were doing until the fences and national guard stopped them.
Yeah, and then in 5 or 10 years, blame Maui that you got cancer and sue us for allowing to roam freely in those toxic ashes. Can't wait to pay for your cancer treatment via our tax $$.
Yeah, it COULN'T possibly be because we are on small island, the on-going effects of settler colonalism, 150 years of land mismanagement by the big 5, human complacency, and climate change. yeah, no, right?
It is amazing at same time how people believe goverment is so inept yet can pull these these massive scheme involving hundreds or thousands of people to keep the secret. So which is it? Government is so stupid that they no can do anything right or so smart that they are pulling the wool over everyone but you and your friends? I am sure the firefighters and police happily sacrificed there own homes and families this plot cause they that loyal to the cause.
Or just maybe people are human and made mistakes because they failed to really believe something like this could actually happen. Same feelings on this as watching commercial planes hit buildings on purpose, seemed unreal even as it was happening.
As for needing tourism, why do think Lahaina (the Venice of the Pacific during 1870's) was dry as bone? Could it be that those lovely hotels (which are the highest water users in County) and the gentleman estates (most of which owned as second homes by out of state are diverting water from Lahaina. Aloha Chris, this is Jess here again. I am so sorry that the topic to discuss for 4 weeks now has been the Mui fires. Yu may recall that on my 1st comment I mentioned it was only going to be a matter of time before the Hawiian government officials started pointing their fingers at each other, that came to pass. Every day that had gone by something new has surface, nothing will surprise me anymore, I do know that all the rich celebrities', starting with Oprah, their careers are over, with the exception of Chuck Norris, he hasn't been there for a while , and ex-beatle George Harrison it's been death for years, but Dwayne " The Rock "'s career is over, his movies weren't doing that well anyway. My next prediction is that, something this big, has to self destroy , the top turkey that planned and arranged for this carnage certainly it going to want any living witnesses ( Dath men tell no tales ), don't be surprised if one by one, the city officials that are involve , whether they have resigned or not, will start having mysterious deaths. Let's do some math here, in the beginning the stated they were 1,000 unaccounted people , then 2,00 children turned up missing, well, I believe this 1,000 people are the parents of these children. What about those army cargo helicopters that were flying over the fires, and the other ones with the laser beams, then a jet dropping what appears to be smart bombs,Lol! When this is over, I don't think too many people are going to want to go to Maui. This was definitely a land grab terrorist attack, there's no doubt about it, it kinda makes you wonder, which island is next ? Wel Chris, mahalo for reading my comment.

In a forest fire, if the forest burns up totally, this means that the fire burned hot enough for it to burn into the crowns of the trees and once in the crowns it spreads from tree to tree. In a town fire, the main fire is down in the houses. The canopy of trees is spread out and often don't touch each other. It is too complicated to explain in a short post, so I suggest to people that they google pictures of the Oakland Hills fire of 1991. you can find pictures of whole neighborhoods burned to a crisp and the trees still standing. . this is a known phenomenon. As for the officials. the fire moved too fast for both police and the fire department. 2 trucks were burned over and burned up. Having been through fires and seen what happens in fast moving fires driven by wind, I think towns have to be better prepared and I believe the two things that would save lives if an active alarm system, used properly. maybe different sounds for different things, and then in small towns with few exits, the town needs to have the ability to tell the power company to shut down power, so that tractors could be used to push power poles and trees out of the way. In every high wind event once the winds reach a certain threshold, then it should be automatic that some city workers station front loader tractors, which most towns have, and someone with a chain saw to keep major exits open. Someone jumping on a tractor and pushing trees out of the road is one of the things that saved many lives in the Paradise CA fire. .... Last thought.. the leadership did a terrible job of communicating. and by not letting in the locals in some oraganized fashion to see their homes, or at least letting them know some plan for that, they open the door for rumors. Also.. the Gov said to not go to Maui. He should now be shouting from the roof tops to please go, but stay out of Lahaina. The whole thing is just sad. though there are some powerful stories coming out of peoples heroic behavior. .this story made me cry. this is a good man. I hope someone helps him see that he needs to let others help him. I hope they start a go fund me for him. If he wants to use it to help others, that is okay. butI hope he uses at least some of it to help rebuild his home. ua-cam.com/video/yq-k09xBhgw/v-deo.html my heart goes out to Y"all. I was a surfer but never made to Hawaii.. I always wanted to..

      Here is your Truth:
From Ludhiana website, they promote and advertize their little town as a "gay friendly city" and are PROUD of it. God Almighty hates sexual perversion the same as He always has. God created man and woman (Adam&Eve) not adam&steve. God is a holy God and He will not put up with sexual perversion. Look up: Genesis 19:1-29 God destroyed two cities called Sodom & Gomorrah by fire & brimestone. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, another words He does not change. He loves you but if you rebel and reject Him over and over, you will suffer the consequences now and into eternity.

I think it would help if you tell us who is “they” you are talking about in messaging? To start off, the major media companies have put a media black out and no media on the ground interviewing families directly asking questions at the local camps and listening to families sufferings and questions not being answered by their local politicians. Then Oprah, the Rock and others want to fundraise but how do we know the money is going to the families? You see, first messaging should not be about the person recording the video and their friends, but rather focus on the story directly from the voice of the people by visiting by the locally organized camps and last the voice should be about why the video was recorded and any personal contributions. We need people to hold politicians, elected officials accountable to the elites who have access and resources to pressure the politicians for help and harness more support for the local people suffering who’s voice has been shut out. Billions sent to Ukraine while Maui is experiencing a modern day genocide.

When major disaster comes, some local leaders step up and shine (like Mayor Giuliani) and some crash and burn (like Mayor Ray Nagin of New Orleans and most likely most of the officials running Hawaii and Maui except may be Governor Green)

It is Mayor Giuliani but yes it is true. Many leaders are actually not when it comes to such events. They are just power hungry or like the status. It is unfortunate but due to this many citizens suffer.

@vandalianion I’m two years resident on Kauai. While I’m acutely aware I’m considered visitor, it’s my home in my heart. All I can do is do my best to learn, respect, and give back to the sacred land that gives to us.
But it’s palpable the almost venomous sentiment from locals for tourists. We desperately need to resolve that vibration…it’s killing aloha.🌊🫧💗
