  • American Jimmy Connors (1952-) was one of a new generation of players that emerged in the early 1970s. His easy victories over veteran Ken Rosewall in the Wimbledon and US Open finals (he also won the Australian Open that year) seemed to signify a passing of the baton in men's tennis. He then won the US Open in 1976 over his great rival Bjorn Borg, but over the next five years won only one major, the 1978 US Open (again over Borg). After Borg played his last Grand Slam event in 1981, Connors once again returned to winning slams again, taking Wimbledon 1982 (over John McEnroe) and the US Open in 1982 and 1983 (both over Ivan Lendl). He played his last Grand Slam event in 1992 aged 40 and then set up the senior tour.
