    Springbok fan here. I really enjoyed this show, thanks guys. I think there is a common misconception that more ball in play time is necessarily more attractive and will grow the game viewership. In South Africa, we love scrums, lineouts, defense and the physical side of things. As they say in boxing, styles make fights. We don't want our sport to become like rugby league!

    FASCINATING stuff! I wish more channels would cover details like this on improving the game. It's a massive positive step for Rugby and hearing that there's a problem and a strong desire to improve things for everyone based on everyone's thoughts and ideas. Not to mention that we are hearing this directly from Ben, that's even better.

    One thing that should be policed stricter is players supporting their own body weight. If a players feet are behind his hips, it is impossible for him to support his own body weight. The players body will have to be much higher, which will make it easier for the opponents to clean him. It will be much safer, and there is no need for the crockroll.

    • @xmun2450

      exactly and this was something that was implemented in super rugby years ago but not in the northern hemisphere , there players were allowed to put their hands on the ground before going off the ball but they tried to police that hard in the south about 2 years ago, this a big difference between rucks in the north and the south and the difference why in the south the game is faster because they are policed on this.

    It's amazing how short memories are, the Crusaders very rarely start super rugby strong at the start of the season. Have JK and Goldie suggested changes Sky could make to their broadcast to make things more interesting than the NRL. Talk up the scrums, lineouts, the fact that defences are closer and harder to punch through, the need for strategic kicking to gain field position (because the defence doesn’t give you 10m head start each phase like in League.) Sky should get its own house in order before it asks for a worldwide game to change to preserve its spot in the AUNZ market. I definitely think speeding the game up between scrums and lineouts is something worth pursuing but there are plenty of things that can be improved in broadcast and marketing too.
    And yes, I realise BOK is talking about refs wanting to speed it up, but this has been a rolling discussion with JK leading it on The Breakdown.

      Some games have a lot of unnecessary stoppages where players are waiting for the other side or there is more water boys on the field than players. Teams can abuse the game by slowing it down on purpose. Not all games are like it but, un fit players shouldn’t be able to slow the game if fit players can’t speed it up. Does that make sense?

    • @dmazingi
      @dmazingi 2 місяці тому

      @@DMD19 weeeeell I don't think it's a simple issue. Cos yes I've seen teams deliberately walk slowly to the lineouts to catch a breath or just take the fizz out of attack momentum and yes that's not good but it's on the blatant end of the spectrum. But below that extreme some element of slowing down the pace and breaking up attacking momentum are legitimate ways of frustrating the opposition. Truth is we ABs fans would love to see the game sped up cos that's how we score our points, fatigue, pressure and mistakes. And teams like SA have their strength in the forwards they're understandably not rushing to the set piece and they'll beat us when they get there. Theres different ways of playing the game and it's the beautiful thing about it and each way is legitimate and absolutely should be respected. Problem is NZers are insinuating that theirs is the superior form of the game and THATS wrong. I was a prop and dammit I love the contest in the scrums, the lineouts and the rucks. Some of the only places left in rugby where there's a true contest. Why roll that back? Cos the ABs wanna play league? Nah. It's that arrogance that I'd argue cost the ABs the rwc. They opted for a potential try even while under immense pressure cos they almost had a disdain for the goal kick (not to mention the two we missed). If we had had some patience and kicked all our penalties the red card wouldn't have mattered. I'm hoping Jason Ryan will bring back some respect to the forward pack and get us back to basics. We don't need slim and trim props. We need some big boys who can throw a cheekie flip pass now and then but love to get stuck in.

    • @DMD19
      @DMD19 2 місяці тому

      @@dmazingi I personally felt the All Blacks had the stronger forward pack in the final even with Sam cane on the bench. Rucks,scrums and line outs are great. People love them and the contest. I think people want to see all of that just with lesser stoppages of play. I wonder how the game will look if the game develops into a heavy weight category? Both teams walking to the other end and playing force back to give players rest. I’m not sure, people still might love watching it I guess.

    • @dmazingi
      @dmazingi 2 місяці тому

      @@DMD19 I think the ABs needed to put more running pressure on those heavy forwards outside of stoppages. Control the pace of the game more and get them moving around the park. Once it becomes a competitive disadvantage to be heavy the weights will come down. There's a pendulum swing that happens every decade or so and we just happen to be in the big, power era. And as the major representative of the running camp the ABs need to innovate so the pendulum can swing back again and the world will follow if it's successful. But we don't have to adopt JKs rules to do that.

    If All Blacks won the final, nobody would be talking about changing the rules. World Cup quarterfinals were fantastic games under the same rules. No one complained.
    We didn’t have any problem winning the 2011 WC final where France had numerous calls not go their way. But now we lost 2023 WC final, we demand World Rugby to change the rules.

    I disagree. If a red card is given for dangerous head contact the offending player should be off for the whole game. Often the player hit in the head requires a HIA and doesn't return. How is it fair for the offending player who physically hurt the head of an opposition player to be allowed to return to play (and contribute to the team) when the player who was hurt does not? and due to HIA protocols following a concussion may miss the following weeks fixture aswell? 20 minute red card is lessening the punishment for dangerous head contact which is not right.

      We played with 14 men in the final and handled the Boks pretty well. A 7 man ABs scrum didn't have too many issues against the Boks 8. Really think you saffas have a selective way of remembering events, but if you think NZ is worried about the Boks you are so wrong.

    Union has been ruined. Just scrap it and play league

      Oh please. Not everyone likes League. I find it incredibly boring and far too basic.

    Rolling maul should outlawed in the 22.

      Nah even as a back I think that’s a legit part of the game. Would like more leniency with penalties defending the maul though. Sometimes you see some poor bloke get steamrolled by 6 blokes as they score over him and then he cops a yellow card to rub salt into the wound.

      @@thewielloyd988 not only that but attacking players sometimes join in the side in front of the ball carrier...ball carrier if also near the back will worm his way past the one or two guys behind him so he's the last man...the ball has to to move back not the player....all teams are guilty of it.
      Police it fairly or get rid of it
