This guy took over 40 min of his time to explain this to his viewers in extraordinary detail. For some, configuring this type of programs can be confusing and difficult. If every youtuber would put themselves in the shoes of the less knowledgeable and explain things thoroughly like him, we would be making a greater service to others. I really appreciate his contribution here and kindly thank him for setting the bar so much higher for others. I do not believe anyone will be left scratching his head after viewing this rendering on how to get Nextcloud going on their machines. Thank you so very much!

As a wise man once said: "you don't really understood something enough if you can't explain it easily."
Congratulations, you did it.
Let me break down the average youtube tutorial:
1. Not intro with convenient information regarding the stuff.
2. No extra explanation during the steps making it hard for people to follow and understand.
3. Makes it a straight process like "do a, then b, then c" without going through possible hick-ups many users might and will experience.
4. Making it a 3 minute speech about supporting their channel before and after the video which is a total length of 5 minutes. (I`ve watched enough tutorials to confirm that the math apparently checks out and don`t ask me how).
Bonus. If at all the creator of the tutorial didn`t have a mic, lets put super loud fast paced soundtrack on top so that you wake up the whole apartment just because you wanted to print out the assignment you just finished.
Let me break down the average nerdonthestreet tutorial:
1. Starts the video talking about the stuff regarding the tutorial.
2. Makes sure to go through every step and educating you with necessary things that you need to know going forward.
3. Makes it a straight process like "do a, then b, then c" while actually going through possible hick-ups that users might and will experience.
4. Making it a 40+ minute long video without the sellout part taking up 120% of the video.
Bonuse. Promotes FOSS while understanding that some people need to rely on proprietary software and regardless chose to make quality tutorials without huge bias.
Thank you for the comment! I do want to mention that ONLYOFFICE is free software (AGPL), and that didn't really come across in the video since I was mainly talking about file formats. I would have explicitly pointed out if it was non-free.

Good stuff, Thanks for that. btw I can't believe nobody commented on the spell-checker thing with the first document. To my knowledge you have to first select the text you want the checker to apply to and then set the language. So I assume that if you would click somewhere in already existing text the selector at the bottom will switch back to German. Now if you Select All and then set to English I think it would have worked. All word processors I've used work that was, which makes sense in case you have different parts of the text in different languages. Anyway I'm joining the club of people who are impressed by your skill in Linux and tutorial making!
Nice video, and some well considered commentary. I appreciate the very honest review and tutorial... what are your thoughts on lxd / lxc? I’ve got several development stacks running on local and cloud instances and all of the ports are mapped using the lxd. Much easier than docker in my opinion.

hi. when i lauch "apt install gnupg" i have an error saying zfs is not compatible with linux. What should I do? it says I can accept but can have some issues because of my zfs kernel
Thanks for sharing! Have you tested performance with multiple users? I figure it would depend on the document size being edited as well as the amount of users connected. I am trying to figure out the minimum viable server configuration for a 5-8 people group.

I installed nextcloud on a cpanel server after installing onlyoffice my front end does not load at all, How to disable the app through ftp ? is there any way to disable the app from the files in the server? not ssh

It's on your end, this video's volume is normal.
Onlyoffice HTTPS -> HTTP proxy: Add a certificate for your onlyoffice subdomain (e.g. example1.nerdonthestreetcom) and write the proxy in onlyoffice-le-ssl VirtualHost *:443 not in *:80. You can close the HTTP port. (Get the certificate as an alternative for your main cert)
Please correct me if I'm wrong but the only reason *:80 works in this vid is because the http port isn't closed. (@Nerd on the Street I am new to this and that's how I got it to work purely on https with nextcloud; if I write it in *:80 I get an apache error cause well... there ain't nothing there. Your config might be really different but I'm pretty sure about this.)

Has anyone following this tutorial checked their server resource usage ? Everything works but when i check htop or top i can see that my virtualbox one core is pegged at 100% at all times. And in the procceses i cant see anything using that much.

i build the server for the NAS purpose, so i only use the local network, but my server can acces trough VPN. and i use NoIp to keep my server can be accessed by my clients.
i want to integrate it with onlyoffice, it is possible without purchasing any domain name?

Hello, Everything works except this spellchecker. When I do npm install it doesn't install a new node_modules. It just installs an almost empty lock.json file. I've been trying to fix this for hours!! please help meeee

I want to point out something here in case somebody uses the above guide in ubuntu 18.04. When executing the command `sudo apt-get install onlyoffice-documentserver`. The mariadb server is removed automatically, which mean you won't be able to access your previous nextcloud account...

Hi all! Some questions before I go through the whole installation:
- I have a Debian 11 Bullseye server, does it change anything since the video was based on Debian 10?
- I'm using mySQL instead of PostgreSQL: any change here too?
- I'm planning to run both Nextcloud and OnlyOffice on the same machine: can anyone confirm I just have to create 2 subdomains in my DNS area that point to the same machine (with different ports of course)?

"502 nginx bad gateway" is not specific enough to tell what's wrong. That just means your Apache reverse proxy is probably working (or you haven't set it up yet.) You need to check your logs in /var/log/nginx and /var/log/onlyoffice.

Some columns in the database are missing a conversion to big int. Due to the fact that changing column types on big tables could take some time they were not changed automatically. By running 'occ db:convert-filecache-bigint' those pending changes could be applied manually. This operation needs to be made while the instance is offline. For further details read the documentation page about this.

Really nice tutorial, just want to add that idk why but my nginx automatically listens to port 81, its writen in /etc/nginx/conf.d and also /etc/nginxs/sites-enabled/default doesn`t exist. Im using Ubuntu Server 18.04

Nerd, I really REALLY followed the guide...through and through....yet I am still getting that stupid 502 bad gateway from nginx. The funny thing is that it goes to https (the proxy works) and it adds the "/welcome" to the end of the address....so the redirect to the documentserver seems to be working. I even tried to go locally with localhost on a vnc server on the server and it still gives the same error.... my logs don't say much besides

Hi, Thanks for this great guide. Unfortunately, I have had an issue at Step 11: Stop OnlyOffice and rebuild the spell checker from source: at the last step "npm install". I have this error as you mentioned about the Node.js. I think the system said it does not support Node.js v10.19. Hi Jacob, all your videos are really good and understandable. I am stuck at the last step. I am not able to connect onlyoffice document server to my nextcloud server .After putting my onlyoffice server address(onlyoffice.my-server.com) and secret key and when I click on save after waiting for 60 seconds, it throws an error “Error when trying to connect cURL error 28 connection timed out after 6000 milliseconds.
If I try to use the demo onlyoffice document server it throws different error. "Error when trying to connect (error occurred in the document service:Invalid token)"
I got it working without secret key
So you spend 5 minutes complaining about Docker and then another 5 minutes complaining about having to configure Nginx if you refuse to use the Docker image that includes everything. Otherwise nice video.
You might not set up web apps often, but many of them are installable on an existing web server without having to work around their setup scripts. I have no issues with having to configure NGINX, but their installation script clearly failed and thus caused more work than it was worth. Just providing the files and providing an example configuration in their documentation would be better than attempting to configure NGINX automatically and making me clean up the pieces after it fails. That said, I still applauded ONLYOFFICE for providing native packaging, and I think "complaining" describes your comment more than my video.
Is ndis necessary? I had problems not installing ttf-mscorefonts-installer first. Also error with now depreciated apt-key, so did it the only office-documentserver method, which I had installed on my own PC. Dynamic dns at home, for non-static ip seems to be incompatible with https. So I tried install on a digital ocean droplet. 1 for nextcloud, another droplet for onlyoffice. I used your nots referral on digital ocean, so have $100 credit. I missed the timing to get that or $200 on linode, but tried to do it with your referral, but got email about fraud, as I already had a free account there, but then they didn’t accept my card, which was nearly expired. Now digital ocean has locked my account. Email about abuse! They want me to explain my use, and intention for the account.
