In the Garden of Eden, God warned Adam and Eve concerning not eating of the forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and evil, otherwise they would die.
Satan was listening nearly what God had said to them, that's why he said to them, has God said, you shall not eat of every tree in the garden? Satan, aka the serpent,told them his lies, because he is the father of lies.
So Adam and Eve took Satan's lies over the word of God.
