Young female singers will likely sound breathy during puberty and sometimes into young adulthood. This is due to a naturally occurring posterior gap between the vocal folds. I encourage closure, but I do not ask for young sopranos/mezzo-sopranos/altos to forcefully close this posterior gap with conscious vocal fold adduction. Until a singer physically develops and eventually closes this gap, air will "leak," and a breathy, weak tone will often occur. I like using the SOVT exercises with a straw to encourage a balanced sound, even at a young age. You may want to try doing these exercises with the student. You can learn more about SOVT and straw exercises here: www.voicescienceworks.org/sovt-exercises.html (make sure to read the entire page and watch Dr. Ingo Titze demonstrate in the video at the bottom).
What is your best advice, how to open strong head voice (specially for girls and young women… )
Thanks.
