What a legend. Met him is hossegor and he is such a genuine guy. Fierce competitor, focused and clinical, but still super kind, happy and caring. I think a lot of people are intimidated, maybe jealous (even a bit racist towards Brazilians), and only see one side of him. Dudes a legend, and doesnt deserve the bad judgment.

R hughes 100% you nailed it mate I think people hate change and seeing a Brazilian dominate it scares the die hard fans, I think his surfing speaks for itself is unreal and I hope jjf and few other Aussie guys (biased) create some epic battles in years to come

Gabriel is pure talent. He deserves recognition and proper praise for what he's done. To beat Kelly in his first year at huge Teahupoo with almost a 20 in his two scores is unprecedented. Coming from a guy who's trained his entire youth in less than 5ft inconsistent waves. We shouldnt take him for granted as we probably not gonna see a guy like him in a long time. Definitely is in the history of the sport

@@homemodsgarage3401 Nationality has deep bonds with ethnicity and symbolizes a culture. When you don't like or think this culture is inferior than yours, and that your way of being must prevail than that's racist by definition and that's what you're proposing. Racism is an ideological reflect of actual domination. Latin America as a whole is constantly exploited by bigger corporations in its natural resources and very often suffer interference from dominant nations. But what to expect of westerners who bomb the middle east because, among other reasons, their behaviour must be " pointed out". I hope you learn a lesson of humility in this complete dominance of Brazilians in the surfing world

@@homemodsgarage3401 Have no idea where you from , now will tell you a terrible and scary moment that happen with me surfing . There i was a 17 year old skinny kid surfing Malibu for my second time in life , was almost end of spring and the water warmer than usual . Beautiful sunny day , no wind and waves were pumping . Was surfing over the second break on my own , catching just left overs never snaking a single person . If wasn't my board , trunks and not wearing a wetsuit would look like any American , 6 ft blonde green eyes . Looking out saw the big set coming had to paddle and dive passing the waves , saw this big local dude surfing a perfect one caught on the outside , locals only spot . Surfed by me , behind 20 yards from me . Like a present a 5 ft without anybody near came on my way , made a turn paddle a bit to my right and dropped in . Made the bottom turn and saw a perfect line ahead , not bragging but i was a pretty good surfer and ripped the wave in pieces . Guess the guy was paddling back and saw one guy doing well but looked different . Went back to my spot to drop in the next , few minutes passed and this big guy came towards me shouting . Remember his words...LoL . Where you come from with this weird board and gay shorts skinny bi ...ch. Was alone in the water, but had friends out , so I said take it easy my friend I'm from Rio . At the time Brazilians were not around as much , but the guy said out loud . Get out of the water now , tried to level with him . Like come on man ask anyone here if I'm doing any wrong , get out or else . Thought with myself , no way will let this guy own me that easy. Or else or what ......the guy punch my hip and after my board , saw the hole and there i lost . turn my board and stuck my fins on his board and paddle out . He went after me and we had a short fight , I left walking , and him took a nap . Aussies also can be just like you describe us , ass.....es are everywhere . Remember once in Ulu Aussies and Brazzos heating up , realize would not end well . Just left picked up my bike and went back to have a drink over Thhe Blue moon . We can be loud , now nobody sneak waves like Aussies.

Medina is a fierce competitor, and he likes to play that role - and the media likes to paint (simplified) pictures of "the good guy" and "the bad guy" (think Kelly vs Andy).
I've never understood why people completely buy into that bs and believe those "bad guys" are really only that, when obviously they are not...

Finally Gabe had time for interviews due to the pandemic, otherwise he would be travelling, practicing and competing. This is the second interview I saw with him this year, and they changed my mind about him. Before that I only knew the ruthless cold competitor with a lot of attention from the media, and a bad reputation like Stab used to generate. Now I could see that he is a normal guy like all of us, and that he is a genuinely nice person. Thanks Stab! After years Stab-bing Gabe, you showed the other side of a professional competitor.

    This was an awesome interview.
People make mistakes. People make poor decisions. It's easy to blur someone's positive character traits after witnessing a negative. The fact remains, however, that people are not one-dimensional. Gabe runs a foundation that provides opportunities to kids. He clearly loves his family and friends. He exhibits generosity, respect and kindness. 99.9% of the time he wins heats because he just surfs really well.
Discrediting the totality of Gabriel Medina's character because his competitive style can be controversial is like throwing away everything in the refrigerator because you found one rotten carrot in the veggie crisper.

Hi, I’m a Brazilian who lives in the US and I’m a big fan of Medina. I’ve been mad with the international media a few times with the way they handled some situations with Brazilian surfers, specially Medina, and I’ve been mad with Stab as well but I usually don’t comment because I also disagree the way a few Brazilian fans reacted to the situations as well. I guess Mick is one, if not the most, of the greatest human being that have ever used a surfboard and I don’t think it has anyone in the world who doesn’t like and admire him. Watching this video having Mick giving his known version of Gab and Stab giving the chance to both, Gab and Mick, show the “human Gabriel Medina” is absolutely outstanding! I still have the same opinion about Gab and Mick but changed my mind completely about Stab and I hope all the international media follow your example, not to help Gabriel but to lower the tension between the fans. Corona is weirdly teaching us, in the hard way, to respect and see us all as humans besides geographically differences. Thank you very much for this amazing video!

I'm not a Medina fan TBH, but I literally cried my eyes out when ADS won his world title, his speech was POWER . + don't even get me started on Italo! :) absolute legends both of them. I'm a fan of Brazilian surfing and always get super bummed about how divided fans can be. Anyway, I'm going to watch it now because of your comment. p.s. my girlfriends twin bro is also Diogo :) Bom Dia ! have a good one

Medina seems like an introvert and a workaholic. A lot of Brazilian kids in this business are on survival mode for a long time, sometimes when you finally get the status you’ve been working hard for is difficult to turn it off. It’s a process to enjoy the fruits of your labor and relax.

Hey Stab, this was a game changer. Thank you. Ultimately, everyone is doing the best they can with what they have at that moment. Medina reminds me of Cristiano Ronaldo. I grew up not far from the place he used to train as a kid. At the end of the day him and other team players would go to Macdonalds backdoor kitchen so they could have some leftovers for free.

Many discussions are going around Gab and somehow it's still good for him :-) Putting so much of yourself, giving it all and going for it should be respected for what it is, at such a level it's not just only commitment it is also how much you are able to give from yourself (generosity starts with yourself), how much you can take and how consistent and resilient you can be ... and so on. Competing is not only about performance, it is also what kind of human you are at first. Congrats and respect Gab ! What some people think is not so much important ... live and let live ;-)

Because now....im a big fan (unless its him vs JJF lol) and think hes a fantastic surfer and ambassador of the sport and for Brazil of course. The difference between him then, and him now, is totally opposite. What used to seem arrogant and snobby, is now without question, confidence and from the heart. Hearing about his passion for helping kids, those less fortunate or those with little opportunity is just fantastic and inspiring. Good on him.

I agree 100 that the language thing plays a big role in how he’s perceived. Which is a shame, because he actually speaks English very well. But he’s right... the psychology on both sides of the coin must be difficult.
Him trying to articulate himself to a media, and fandom, that he knows will judge him on what he’s trying to say (which must be suuuuper tough and stressful with English in particular, because of all the colloquialisms and slang), and
The fandom which will read into his statements literally as a word for word statement, when in actuality the vibe he’s trying to get across may mean something totally different to someone listening had he even used one word differently.
It’s a tough space to be in I’m sure. Regardless, this was a good interview. WHY did it take him so long to do something like this? Did it seriously just take one superstar to say “I need to help this guy out with his public image”? I always wondered that. Why didn’t Gabe just do something like this a long time ago? He’s a kid and people would’ve understood. That’s the only thing that makes me think “is this real, or is it just damage control”? But that’s a very small part of my thought process. I actually always hoped he was more like this. Seems genuine

Bro, the thing is that Medina is a super star in Brazil. Aside from Rip Curl, his other sponsors here are not even surf related. You see him on tv on main ads all the time. Being the celebrity that he is (which actually gets him hate from much of the brazilian surf community) his reputation within the surfing world doesn't make that much of a difference to him business-wise, aside from his deal with Rip Curl.

      @noBearAdventures 4 роки тому +8

Indo Bule I do agree with that. But I can’t speak to it. I have no comprehension of what is required to be not just a high level athlete, but the pinnacle of your sport kind of athlete. I have no idea what it takes to be a champion on that level. Maybe that’s what’s required. I watch something like “The Last Dance” and it makes me remember how god level Jordan was. But at the time I was a kid, and I didn’t know what he did to get there. And frankly... you could say the same about him. Kind of a dick on the court. So maybe you need some of that. I would rather not be an athlete of that level than have to be that way. But that’s me. I’m not wired like that. I want to have fun. But I can’t begrudge a guy or girl for acting that way to be the absolute best, because that’s their goal. Not mine. Could he be more like John, and more laid back? Probably. Is John better than him? I don’t know. But people don’t realize sometimes that John has that instinct too. He just doesn’t get painted the villain the way Gabe does. I think part of that is low key racism, part of it is language barrier, part of it is his awkwardness and shyness, and part of it is that he’s a dick in the water sometimes. But I’d guess we were all a dick in the water sometimes. Remember the last time you got snaked on a good wave. Maybe you were able to hold restraint. I wasn’t.

I think maybe he doesn't deserve bad reputation people give him.obviously very intense and competitive in the water as he needs to keep sharp for the tour.
We have to realise these guys need a bit of space out there so they can train up and practice.
Who knows he may be mellow and relaxed on land after his surf and happy to chat about life in general.

Thats a really big IF. These professional athletes lead a very self-centered life, and it often shows in their personality. Its kind of like its not their fault; but they SHOULD own up to it, and true humility would constitute tremendous change in an individual leading lives like these professional athletes; Its all about them until its not.

if you respect the pressure cooker that a snowboarding run, a downhill BMX run or a skateboard competition run is, then you should be able to respect Lemoore in that sense too...that said I reckon the wsl need more elements to make the event funnerer...like IRON CHEF has a feature ingredient, each heat should have an X factor manoeuvre that scores higher or something... like Ben Gravys spin the wheel contest

The reaction to his kind behaviour just shows the huge insensibility of WSL on their decision of not having a translator on the beach interviews. The brazilians has won 4 world titles, we are not a supporting nation any longer at the sport and we do speak portuguese here. All of our best surfers came from a poor background and cannot learn english from the early ages, they have to learn while world class competitors and then speak a broken english. There are many times that you can see that the surfer just couldn't understand the question made.
