I personally really like BIS, but I just found DT more... creative with its setting and characters? BIS re-imagined the Mushroom Kingdom, even though PIT already did that. And yeah, it makes sense for the story, but somehow the Mushroom Kingdom in it is different from PIT's even though the games are connected?? I don't really care that much, but still *really* appreciate DT's attempt at an original world.
Out of all the M&L games this one has to be the most underrated. People say PiT is the most underrated but I disagree. It has to be the 2nd most "talked about" installment. (Bowser's inside story is the most well known and talked about.) I don't know why because (In my opinion.) this is the 2nd best gimmick (The dream world) in the M&L franchise. It introduced so many unique character's like Antasma, prince Dreambert etc. with there own personality and even there own tragic back-story. This game really needs more attention then it's getting.
Imo the writing def needed improvement. It had a similar vibe to BiS but didnt execute the dialogue perfectly. Same with the new cast, they’re all good but a bit more personality, expressions and better writing was needed. Especially the Zeekeeper and Antasma, i feel like those two in particular had really great potential but it just didnt happen. Also i dont think the dream world was fleshed out enough. The only times we get to witness the dream world in near full capacity is when you’re at a dream point. Most ofthe regular pil’llos dream worlds are bland, and usually take up a single room of space. I’m not saying they have to be super long, but i think they could’ve been expanded and maybe touched on new ideas with the luiginary works or something to add more substance to the gameplay.
I got this when I was 9 and never finished it. And I started it two days ago and can’t stop exploring and find the universe so charming and interesting. Great game.

I recently bought this game and I've played about 4 1/2 hours so far. It's my first Mario & Luigi RPG, so I'm totally new to the series and I have to admit that I didn't expect it to be this good. It's true the tutorials are dragging on for a bit too long, especially if you kind of need at least some them like me, but it looks great, it plays fantastic, it's creative and the soundtrack is amazing. I really don't regret buying this game, it's worth it's money. =D It's overall a very good game.
This came free on a special edition Luigi 3DS XL that I purchased almost three years ago, and I just started it recently. I've been playing it now for about an hour a day for the past three weeks, and I'm just now half way through it. I totally love this great looking, action-packed, hilarious RPG. I can't believe it's been sitting dormant on my 3DS all this time--better late than never, I suppose...

The characters are all 2D sprites. I recently saw an article somewhere that mentioned making all the sprites was a painstaking process that took years! Gotta love that Nintendo dedication!
eduardo coello That's cool if you like it. I have no problems with that. I personally didn't really like it because the overworld seemed so bland compared to the others in the series. There was hardly any sense of exploration in it. This is especially obvious when compared to the super expansive world of Superstar Saga. Another reason is that there wasn't any sidequests at all to do. Literally all you had do to 100% it was to beat Elder Princess Shroob. But, that is just my opinion. You're entitled to your own as well :)
I really love this game, but my only issues with it is the dragging pace at the beginning and the difficulty spikes with the last few giant battles. Other than that, absolutely incredible

Depending on the amount of sidequests and battles you do, it can range between 25 and 50 hours. My first clear was at 44 hours, after a few sidequests and minigames done as well
I completely agree, this is by far one of the best Mario RPG's...or at least much better than Sticker Star, which had its own charms. Yes the tutorials really drag it a little a the beginning but later they stop with it when you discover newer Luiginary Works for example. Also for those who think this game is 'too easy' play through it and you unlock a special Hard Mode, which is less forgiving than the normal mode.
This is a really well-done review. I have to commend Derrick. It's obvious he really liked the game but didn't spend the whole time heaping gushing praise. He told us what wasn't quite up to scratch, informed us well on the general concept and gave a deserving score. He didn't reveal anything and was just good in all the right ways. I'm giving this review five stars out of five.
I agree completely. Sticker Star's lack of story and new characters made it easily the worst Mario RPG. It's a shame too, since Super Paper Mario before it had so much dedication and love put into its story and characters. So did Thousand Year Door and the original. Why couldn't Sticker Star do what they did? Dream Team is easily the better of the fourth installments. Its only flaw was *SPOILER* Antasma being cast aside for Bowser at the end, and the lack of Fawful.
I played the demo at a gamestop near my home. I was considering buying a 3DS XL and when I played this game I wanted more. It was very satisfying to play! I will definitely buy this game eventually.
If you're into RPGs, or Mario games, this game is truly incredible. My only nitpicks with it are a quite slow start and a lot of battles (a few less with more exp would've been better to me). The rest is amazing though, and it's truly worth your money
My only complaint with the game would definitely be the tutorials they throw at you constantly, but that can be ignored. After the travesty that befell the Paper Mario series with Sticker Star, I am so FREAKING Glad Miyamoto didn't tried to screw with Dream Teams developement and let Alpha Dream do their thing. And I felt this game was the true highlight of the Year of Luigi.

This game is definitely top 5 list on the 3DS even in 2017. The RPG mechanics are very well designed and is addicting "enough". By enough, I mean that the game does not take control of your life like an MMO would, and you could put the game down to do other things if you have to. The story is decent and very weird and uses a big theme which is sleeping and that was always what M&L series was about. In comparison to previous entries in the series, this game is not actually as hard, which was another thing that this series was known for. One example of this being in the first MandL game it was actually very easy to Game Over despite what level you were. However, the mix ups in this game are definitely the equivalents of being "trolled", which is also very interesting. To put in simple terms, the game is easy enough for you to beat, but it will laugh at you with tricks that you most definitely will get hit by in many of the fights. There are way too many things in this game to keep you entertained other than the fights, good soundtrack and story btw. Definitely worth a buy and playthrough and it has much replay value.
well, i havent played other mari and luigi rpgz, but damn, this game is fun. im only 10 h in and i am very very delighted with the game. its a very interesting mix of platforming and rpg elements, perfect for ppl that wanna get into the rpg genre and dont know where to start. for all u rpg hardcore and casual players, yea, the tutorials may be too much, but for the kids that have never played such a game its perfect.
I could say a lot about this game... but in order to avoid being like every other self-proclaimed youtube "game expert" who troll articles spouting their useless rhetoric (and I'm accepting the supreme irony of my words thank you very much) I'll just cut the fat and sum up everything wrong with this game: It's not fun. What more do you need to know? It's 30 hours of going through the motions, doing what you've done in all the previous games. You've been here, you've done all this before.
I completely disagree, I've been having a blast playing through this game. Yes, the overworld puzzles can drag, but the battles are TONS of fun. You know you have a good battle system, when I purposely draw out battles because I enjoy it so much. Then again, this is only my second Mario and Luigi game, so I can see where your coming from the "been here done that thing"
***** I played Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, Partners in Time and Bowser Inside Story and I can honestly say that I never seem to get sick of the battle system in the series. Hell Even the Paper Mario games still keep me entertained till this day. Normally I would get bored but for some reason this series has kept me hooked with the battle system, presentation, characters and music. The one I do agree on is the forced tutorials that can just drag the first couple of hours of the game on forever as it seems. You can choose to skip the tutorial at times but not all of the time.
I'm actually completely fine with this being like the other Mario and Luigi games. I really don't see that as a negative. It's not a good thing either but I don't think every game has to reinvent the wheel if the wheel worked just fine.
I like it how you gave this game more stars to say this game is a very excellent game in the M&L game series of all time, plus I couldn't believe that this amazing game isn't in North America yet.
Ahhhh... This game. So much nostalgia, this game is held in a sacred spot in my heart. Not only is it a great game, but this game is one of the factors of how I met my best friend. (Let's call him "C" for privacy reasons) Sadly, our friendship will not last much longer, I would do anything to be best friends again. But we rarely talk anymore, (besides when we eat lunch) but I always feel left out when at our lunch table. I wish the best for our friendship in the future.

Derrick, from what I heard, everything is 2-D sprites, the developers went the extra mile to try and make the sprites look 3D. You know how dedicated people are when they take the time to do these kinds of things.
great review man. i agree with everything you've said. i played partners in time and bowser inside story, played sticker star as well...i LOVE dream team. it's insane fun. sure, the tutorials mean it tooo good sometimes but it didn't bother me much. this game is in my top 5 3ds games list for sure. music, presentation, just wow.

THAT WAS STILL A STORY!!!! Sure it was simple, but it still existed! And the coins are used to buy the thing stickers you need for bosses. You could backtrack to where you found the Thing, but the coins get rid of the backtracking. I personally had no trouble with where to use the thing stickers, so just chalk it up to my intuition.
But they broaden the audience of the game, which isn't a bad thing considering the New Mario Platformer series still sell more than these other better titles. NSMB sold about 900 thousand copies in the first week. while PiT and BiS sold 130 and 190 thousand copies respectively in the same period. Thing is, it's optional, it only makes the game easier if you give up and use it, and to people who are not willing to keep trying until they get it right, those are good features.
Mario and Luigi RPGs aren't meant to have amazing plots. That's not the point. The point is a fun battle system, sharp and witty dialog, humor and charm. The games in the series don't take themselves too seriously and should be played for fun. Don't come in looking for this epic story.
I admit, the story wasn't as good as the previous games, but you have to admit, this game is PERFECT when you just want to have fun! I had so much fun with this game from the beginning to the end. It was amazing watching Mario and definitely Luigi goof off in the cutscenes and the battles never got repetitive. This game was so much fun. =D
Yes, but I heard (rather read in the Iwata Asks interview with the game's developers) that all of those helps are totally optional and were put in the game so less experienced players wouldn't feel abandoned. So if you want to challenge the game, you actually can avoid those helps.

Yeah, I'm a little under 8 hours in. This game is so good, that it quickly became my favorite M&L game (before this one my favorite has remained Superstar Saga) The game is charming, looks fantastic, great gameplay, boss fights, music, and story, and there are moments that are VERY funny. If you don't have this game, and don't plan on getting it, then in the words of Reggie from Nintendo - "Then what's wrong with you?"
Yeah - but it's optional difficulty. If you want to keep playing it in 'hard mode', you can just avoid hints and all that. So it's only easier if you want it to be easy. The overall difficulty is increased, though, if you avoid the things (which aren't really in the way) that are clearly there to help players who don't want to bother repeating stuff.
I don't actually have the game. But many trusworthy websites and reviews says the game is about 40 hours long. That's double the amount of time in the previous installments! I know the replay value because I did some reseach wondering that very same question. And because replay value isn't part of the main story, a little spoilers (To me) wouldn't hurt! :)
Depends on what you're looking for. If you want a really intense story and a serious challenge then you should get Fire Emblem. But if you want a less serious game to get a good laugh then you should pick mario and luigi. They're both really good games. My favorite one is Fire Emblem.
There's so many games up coming that I want. This one, Rayman legends, Sonic lost worlds and Super Mario 3d World, and that's just this year. Mario Kart 8 will be out next year!
You could slow down special attacks in previous games, even dating back as far as Superstar Saga. Not only that, this game becomes pretty challenging in later areas. I'd say if not equal in difficulty to the others, it's harder. (If only slightly)
To be honest, I don't find the tutorials necessarily a bad thing. Although my patience is really high and when it comes to games, I like reading every possible thing.
Your blinded by nostalgia I grew up with all of them! -_- This is my second favourite, still love Bowser's Inside Story more. But Idk, they went all out with the art style! I love it!
My biggest personal gripe with this game is the lack of enemy variety. Each area only has about 1 or 2 types of enemies, and for as long as you're in these areas, you'll get sick of seeing the same enemies over and over.
I have something that I need someone to please answer for me, it really makes me mad. I dream team, whenever I am in the dream world, I don't know what causes this, but a random clock appears above mario and then It will go away and I take 999 damage and I instantly die, what causes this? It's REALLY pissing me off
It is kind of. There are so many references to the game, the beanish people and hooskis come back. Someone else also comes back but I won't spoil it in case you don't know.
why didn't you touch at all on beans, pi'illos, or expert challenges, those were my favorite part of the game imo. Anyways, I'd give it an almost-perfect 9.8/10. The reason that .2 is missing is because of the difficulty of dodging some enemie's attacks, or even worse, some of the bosses's attacks.(*cough cough* pi'illodium)

To be honest, this game is WAY too long. A bunch of padding is used just to make the game artificially longer. It was better when the games just had the fine about 20 hours of gameplay, but Dream Team just drags on and on. When I got to somnon woods I actually started running from some battles bc the game was simply going on for too long. Everything else about the game is fine. Well maybe the gold beanies could have been introduced earlier but other than that little nitpick, the game’s length is just too long for this type of gameplay it has imo. If I were to rate it it would be like a 7.8/10. Pretty good but has pacing issues

In my opinion: this is the best luigi game for the year(s) of luigi, I'm so happy he got his own rpg dedicated to him basically.

Fawful is literally one of the best nintendo characters ever, plus he references Scooby Doo.

After the travesty that befell the Paper Mario series with Sticker Star, I am so FREAKING Glad Miyamoto didn't tried to screw with Dream Teams developement and let Alpha Dream do their thing. And I felt this game was the true highlight of the Year of Luigi.
you really think it's hotel mario bad?nope,then again,the reason why I like it so much is because of the hub world,because it fells like a mario game (unlike the gcn and the wii one.),but I prefer dream team over sticker star.

This game is definitely top 5 list on the 3DS even in 2017. The RPG mechanics are very well designed and is addicting "enough". By enough, I mean that the game does not take control of your life like an MMO would, and you could put the game down to do other things if you have to. The story is decent and very weird and uses a big theme which is sleeping and that was always what M&L series was about. In comparison to previous entries in the series, this game is not actually as hard, which was another thing that this series was known for. One example of this being in the first MandL game it was actually very easy to Game Over despite what level you were. However, the mix ups in this game are definitely the equivalents of being "trolled", which is also very interesting. To put in simple terms, the game is easy enough for you to beat, but it will laugh at you with tricks that you most definitely will get hit by in many of the fights. There are way too many things in this game to keep you entertained other than the fights, good soundtrack and story btw.
Definitely worth a buy and playthrough and it has much replay value.
well, i havent played other mari and luigi rpgz, but damn, this game is fun. im only 10 h in and i am very very delighted with the game. its a very interesting mix of platforming and rpg elements, perfect for ppl that wanna get into the rpg genre and dont know where to start. for all u rpg hardcore and casual players, yea, the tutorials may be too much, but for the kids that have never played such a game its perfect.
I could say a lot about this game... but in order to avoid being like every other self-proclaimed youtube "game expert" who troll articles spouting their useless rhetoric (and I'm accepting the supreme irony of my words thank you very much) I'll just cut the fat and sum up everything wrong with this game:

What more do you need to know? It's 30 hours of going through the motions, doing what you've done in all the previous games. You've been here, you've done all this before.
I completely disagree, I've been having a blast playing through this game. Yes, the overworld puzzles can drag, but the battles are TONS of fun. You know you have a good battle system, when I purposely draw out battles because I enjoy it so much. Then again, this is only my second Mario and Luigi game, so I can see where your coming from the "been here done that thing"

***** I played Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, Partners in Time and Bowser Inside Story and I can honestly say that I never seem to get sick of the battle system in the series. Hell Even the Paper Mario games still keep me entertained till this day. Normally I would get bored but for some reason this series has kept me hooked with the battle system, presentation, characters and music. The one I do agree on is the forced tutorials that can just drag the first couple of hours of the game on forever as it seems. You can choose to skip the tutorial at times but not all of the time.
I'm actually completely fine with this being like the other Mario and Luigi games. I really don't see that as a negative. It's not a good thing either but I don't think every game has to reinvent the wheel if the wheel worked just fine.
Bowser was never the villian till now. It was a nice twist
I like it how you gave this game more stars to say this game is a very excellent game in the M&L game series of all time, plus I couldn't believe that this amazing game isn't in North America yet.
A must for 3DS owners great graphics 3d visual effects are stuning, a some what lack of battle music but nonetheless good game Nintendo!!!!!

At first, I was skeptical about the new Dream World mechanic, but now, it looks fantastic and I look forward to playing this game.
Ahhhh... This game. So much nostalgia, this game is held in a sacred spot in my heart. Not only is it a great game, but this game is one of the factors of how I met my best friend. (Let's call him "C" for privacy reasons) Sadly, our friendship will not last much longer, I would do anything to be best friends again. But we rarely talk anymore, (besides when we eat lunch) but I always feel left out when at our lunch table. I wish the best for our friendship in the future.

Derrick, from what I heard, everything is 2-D sprites, the developers went the extra mile to try and make the sprites look 3D.
You know how dedicated people are when they take the time to do these kinds of things.

great review man. i agree with everything you've said. i played partners in time and bowser inside story, played sticker star as well...i LOVE dream team. it's insane fun. sure, the tutorials mean it tooo good sometimes but it didn't bother me much. this game is in my top 5 3ds games list for sure. music, presentation, just wow.

I can't wait to play this game!!! It really brings back the nostalgia from Bowser's Inside Story. I remember clearly that BIS (Bowser's Inside Story) was the exact reason why my left trigger broke. AAAAAAAAAAH!!!! I WANT TO PLAY IT SO BADLY!!!!
They have a 3DS for each region and were able to play the European version since it came out July 12th in Europe.
Same thing happened to me, I guess it teaches people to not only look at the greats of something, but to also look at the bads of it.
THAT WAS STILL A STORY!!!! Sure it was simple, but it still existed! And the coins are used to buy the thing stickers you need for bosses. You could backtrack to where you found the Thing, but the coins get rid of the backtracking. I personally had no trouble with where to use the thing stickers, so just chalk it up to my intuition.
But they broaden the audience of the game, which isn't a bad thing considering the New Mario Platformer series still sell more than these other better titles. NSMB sold about 900 thousand copies in the first week. while PiT and BiS sold 130 and 190 thousand copies respectively in the same period.
Thing is, it's optional, it only makes the game easier if you give up and use it, and to people who are not willing to keep trying until they get it right, those are good features.

Mario and Luigi RPGs aren't meant to have amazing plots. That's not the point. The point is a fun battle system, sharp and witty dialog, humor and charm. The games in the series don't take themselves too seriously and should be played for fun. Don't come in looking for this epic story.
I admit, the story wasn't as good as the previous games, but you have to admit, this game is PERFECT when you just want to have fun! I had so much fun with this game from the beginning to the end. It was amazing watching Mario and definitely Luigi goof off in the cutscenes and the battles never got repetitive. This game was so much fun. =D

Good game, but overall I preferred Bowser's Inside Story. Still liked it better than Partners in Time though. I'd give it 8/10 personally.
Yes, but I heard (rather read in the Iwata Asks interview with the game's developers) that all of those helps are totally optional and were put in the game so less experienced players wouldn't feel abandoned. So if you want to challenge the game, you actually can avoid those helps.

Yeah, I'm a little under 8 hours in. This game is so good, that it quickly became my favorite M&L game (before this one my favorite has remained Superstar Saga)
The game is charming, looks fantastic, great gameplay, boss fights, music, and story, and there are moments that are VERY funny.
If you don't have this game, and don't plan on getting it, then in the words of Reggie from Nintendo -

My mind was blown when I found out the game uses sprites for all the characters, through the Iwata Asks interview.
Yeah - but it's optional difficulty. If you want to keep playing it in 'hard mode', you can just avoid hints and all that.
So it's only easier if you want it to be easy. The overall difficulty is increased, though, if you avoid the things (which aren't really in the way) that are clearly there to help players who don't want to bother repeating stuff.
I don't actually have the game. But many trusworthy websites and reviews says the game is about 40 hours long. That's double the amount of time in the previous installments! I know the replay value because I did some reseach wondering that very same question. And because replay value isn't part of the main story, a little spoilers (To me) wouldn't hurt! :)

Depends on what you're looking for. If you want a really intense story and a serious challenge then you should get Fire Emblem. But if you want a less serious game to get a good laugh then you should pick mario and luigi. They're both really good games. My favorite one is Fire Emblem.
There's so many games up coming that I want. This one, Rayman legends, Sonic lost worlds and Super Mario 3d World, and that's just this year. Mario Kart 8 will be out next year!

You could slow down special attacks in previous games, even dating back as far as Superstar Saga. Not only that, this game becomes pretty challenging in later areas. I'd say if not equal in difficulty to the others, it's harder. (If only slightly)
One thing I really liked about this game is that almost no matter everywhere you go there's characters to talk to.
i still like bowser's inside story the best, especially with the interaction between bowser and the bro. and that game is ridiculously funny.

The tutorials stop me from giving this game a perfect score. Other than that I love this gorgeous fun game along with Bowser's Inside Story.
To be honest, I don't find the tutorials necessarily a bad thing. Although my patience is really high and when it comes to games, I like reading every possible thing.

My biggest personal gripe with this game is the lack of enemy variety. Each area only has about 1 or 2 types of enemies, and for as long as you're in these areas, you'll get sick of seeing the same enemies over and over.
That is very true. I love this game, but you're right. The enemies got annoying frequently because there wasn't much variety among them.
How does something like that ruin the game?
I have something that I need someone to please answer for me, it really makes me mad. I dream team, whenever I am in the dream world, I don't know what causes this, but a random clock appears above mario and then It will go away and I take 999 damage and I instantly die, what causes this? It's REALLY pissing me off
It is kind of. There are so many references to the game, the beanish people and hooskis come back. Someone else also comes back but I won't spoil it in case you don't know.
why didn't you touch at all on beans, pi'illos, or expert challenges, those were my favorite part of the game imo.
Anyways, I'd give it an almost-perfect 9.8/10. The reason that .2 is missing is because of the difficulty of dodging some enemie's attacks, or even worse, some of the bosses's attacks.(*cough cough* pi'illodium)
He was a short boss actually. It's the giant bosses (especially the medly) that really get on my nerve.

If you're talking about Sticker Star, I haven't played it yet, but from what I've seen, it's good enough. And also I didn't say that the Mario & Luigi series wasn't perfect. I was making the point to that doodlypikachu guy that they don't "always mess up the Paper Mario series" But apparently Sticker Star was a mess up?
To be honest, this game is WAY too long. A bunch of padding is used just to make the game artificially longer. It was better when the games just had the fine about 20 hours of gameplay, but Dream Team just drags on and on. When I got to somnon woods I actually started running from some battles bc the game was simply going on for too long. Everything else about the game is fine. Well maybe the gold beanies could have been introduced earlier but other than that little nitpick, the game’s length is just too long for this type of gameplay it has imo. If I were to rate it it would be like a 7.8/10. Pretty good but has pacing issues
