Do you know anything about the summer camp taking place? It hasn't been officially cancelled yet, so I was wondering if you had any inside information.
I started to DMing recently and I am D.M. a campaign fully based on character's background. I had luck my players wrote backgrounds with hooks I could use and they are loving it. Every section I ask them publicly and privately what they liked, loved, disliked and what they think cold be better and it is being very helpful.
Another tip to elaborate on tip 7 Use eatable enemies for combat encounters. It is super satisfying getting to eat your adversary after a lengthy combat session. Great tips. Definitely be using these in my future DMin endeavors
engaging player backgrounds has 2 benefits: keeps them engaged and you as DM don't have to come up with as many hooks and plots from scratch. When running multiple campaigns, I fin it gets very difficult to keep coming up with new, interesting, original ideas, so prompts are defo my saving grace.
I am a first time DM at the moment but have been in several campaigns as a player over the past year, and I'm trying to do Icewind Dale: ROtF right now. Your guides have been incredibly helpful, thank you!!
Wow! 10 is crazy! I did that with a group who had never played before and it went okay, but I doing that on a regular basis would be exhausting! And thank you, uncertain times ahead, but I'm confident it will turn out alright :)
What a cool cat. More D&D channels like this, please. I.E. a real human being, not fastidious hyper-nerds or smug, aggressive little child-men, or even a half-tyrannical taskmaster. Genuine humanity, like Web DM or the Dungeon Dudes. Wonderful video, signor.
These are Great tips and usable techniques for even the experienced Dungeon Master! I especially like tip 3, check in with your players, super important! Great job Bob!🙂
Thank you, coach! I agree that one is right up there with setting expectations as some of the most important guidelines for a fun and long-lasting campaign :)
Oh sheesh! I hope I haven't done that before xD He tends to comment early, and your comment even had a similar tone to his haha. Thank you for understanding! Lol
Ha! I've been watching Bob World Builder videos for about a week and kept thinking "Bob has the perfect demeanor for teaching elementary or middle school kids. Nailed it.
So glad you made this video. My ten year old just told me last night our sessions have become a little boring and upon reflection I realized I had stopped doing many things you brought up in this video. Speaking of working with kids...how much do you share with younger players in regard to helping them along with the game? My 16 year old needs no help but my 10 year old struggles. Really hope the best for you during this time.
At your service, David! :) That's pretty funny though, most players aren't that honest and will let a game spoil rather than tell their DM how they feel! As far as sharing with players, I guess it depends on the situation, but I rarely withhold any information. Like after the first round or two of combat, I tell them the AC and give pretty clear hints about how much HP the enemy has left. If it's regarding a puzzle or simply where to go next, encourage the players by just going along with anything they suggest, but coming up with some reason to make it seem the they found the "correct" answer. Basically, there should never be only one way for players to do something. Once the players are more comfortable trying out their ideas, the game will run much more smoothly
Hey Bob, I've been watching your videos for a small amount of time and as a budding DM myself, I love these, they are so helpful and your content is very easy to listen to and follow! Thank you so much for this series and helping me overcome my DM Anxiety 😊
Being a new DM I have found all of your videos to be the most valuable tool out there. Especially the Icespire Peak walk through. All of your videos are so uplifting and I hope this channel thrives beyond all your expectations. With barely knowing you I can tell your an amazing guy. This is my first comment to ever leave on UA-cam but I want to do everything I can to help. Best to ya
Really appreciate the tips and advice you have been giving! Sorry for the temporary loss. That being said, I literally started back up in D&D in December for my son and his friends with Dragon of Icespire Peak and your page provided WONDERFUL tips and advice in running the campaign more efficiently! I now currently am running it again but with two different groups and still refer back to your page since you keep providing great tips and advice! Keep up the great work! Thank you and good luck!
It's awesome to hear these videos are becoming a long term resource for you! Definitely share them with your other groups if any of those players plan to run DoIP in the future! And please let me know what topics you would like to hear more about (DoIP specifics, or any D&D topics)! :)
To engage them i have a player that goes to be an antagonist. The thing is, he is "supposedly a vampire" but it's only a blood hunter with charm and a life stealing rapier. But they don't know that. They just encounter with him, he spaced out a player on a room and literally terrorised the others on the other side of the locked room. Now a player is marked and this character know where he is every time. Good session.
As someone who watches tons of DnD DM-tips videos like podcasts throughout the day, I could tell quickly how well crafted and thoughtful this video was going to be, and it absolutely was! Keep up the awesome work, I look forward to your further videos :)
Hey, Bob. I've been playing tabletop RPG for about 20+ years now. I'm a DM most of the time and our group plays anything, but for the most part of our lives, we've been playing GURPS. It's been like 1 and half since our last play session and we're about to start over again, and now we'll go with a brand new D&D campaign (as it saves preparation time for busy adults like us). I've been watching your videos for a couple of weeks now, looking for tips to get rid of the rust and, thank you very much. I think I'm ready to go! Greeting from Brazil and keep the good work!
I watched two of your video prior to this one and I got the feeling that you must be a teacher! Great videos and your approach to imparting knowledge is inspiring and heartwarming. Keep it up! Greeting from Chile.
Just found your channel, excellent advice and good entertaining video. I hope you are well and that your state has opened up the school's to field trips and you as a resource for children. God bless and good luck on your adventures.
I appreciate that! My organization ended up making a new kind of program to adapt to virtual learning, so I did get my job back, though it has been a very weird year. We're all looking forward to things being mostly normal next year!
Awsome! That's exactly the message I'd like to spread to french roleplayers, and GM's. We can find essential skills in our jobs (i'm sports coach for children).
i cannot believe the quality of your content. I found you i think 3 days ago and have been almost completely engrossed in each and everyone of your videos. I continue to love and reccommend you to keep doing these world building assist tools or whatever but also would like to see a place or playlist of your dnd sessions. idk if i just havent found it yet but i wanna see what your groups do for dnd! Good luck on growing!
I came across your channel tonight and am enjoying your calming demeanor yet passion in your videos. This one in particular really spoke to me, having taught middle and high school kids. My heart goes out to you, and I wish you the best in these trying times. Keep up the great work and videos! Cheers!
Hey Bob, just wanted to pop in and say you got this! I so wish I could afford the big patreon to join in you game, but for now I will just admire from afar. Also, this was a great video
30 sec in and the man got me twice, I heard the honk… paused in confusion… then replayed it again and was still confused until he literally told us lol
Some great ideas! I'm surprised I never heard anyone suggest a timer before. An egg timer or something that gives regular ticks really would get the blood going. Under "stacks and drinks" you should have mentioned to put your Doritos in a bowl, rather than listen to the continual distraction of players eating out of a crinkly bag.
I don't have any money, but this is the first video of yours that I have seen and I liked it. I will support you in the only way that I can, leaving a possitive comment in every single one of your videos that I see, so maybe the youtube gods will help you. Good luck with this full time youtube adventure!
Hey Bob, I almost never comment or [ever seems to remember] actually clicking the like button on videos I like but here I am commenting and liking! Hopefully this video will give me the kick I need to remember the dead simple ways to support that are so easy to forget. Hope all is well career-wise -- Keep building!
New viewer here off of the Reddit post. Really well-done video that definitely earned a subscription and continued following. My favorite tip was #3, which is something I really feel like is overlooked. I've participated in a number of campaigns fall flat simply because the DM was out of sync with players wants after months of play. A simple check-in prior to campaign busts could've been the answer to reinvigorate the excitement for the game.
Welcome, Will! I really appreciate you leaving a comment here and subscribing! I agree about #3, it's all about the long-term fun :) Is there anything you would add to the list?
Bob, your videos are so helpful. I also lost my career due to covid. watching this video (after watching MANY of your others) encouraged me to subscribe as a patron. I really hope you're doing well and I'm so stoked for future content. (I know this is from last summer but I became a DM recently so i'm getting all caught up) Anyways, what i'm trying to say is you rule!
I hope to see your channel explode into ultimate success! You’ve got a great personality and you’re super knowledgeable so I think you’ll do well. It’s scary first starting out on UA-cam. I started just a few months ago and it can be discouraging at first, but if you have passion about the subject matter and the drive to succeed you can accomplish your dreams! I will definitely spread your videos to my friends!!! Thank you for the great content. I appreciate it.
I’m commenting to help you cause you helped me. Thank you so much for helping me engage my players and I hope you can get another job if UA-cam and patreon don’t work out. Good luck
Really good advice! I hope that your school/employment situation has RE-hired you since lockdowns. Having to face that kind of financial uncertainty amid the existential crisis of Covid is unbelievable. I hope this comment finds you In better circumstances, two years after the fact. Thank you for your videos and good cheer.
Totally. Love all your content! I actually found your channel poking around for helpful videos on the Icespire peak campaign. I saw that there was a full playlist on all of the material that I needed the most! Five seconds later, I was a supporter, fan and subscriber. I send you and Grace my regards, and keep up the good work! Lovin’ it!
Tip #6 was very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make and edit this vid. That really sucks about your job brother. I know you got what it takes to make it. Just remember, you are the DM of your own campaign (So to speak). I'm gonna give patreon a look and try to give my support however I can.
I'm happy to help, and I really appreciate your support! :) I completely agree with your perspective, and that's how I'm trying to make the best of the situation. I recently learned how to make a custom pledge if you would like to pledge an amount below the first tier, but ANY support (including you already taking the time to write this comment) is super helpful! Thank you!
Your channel is awesome! I started DMing DoIP and your tips are great! Everyday I watch at least one video :) One question: your tip of using a timer is for making a scene with urgent decisions? Like, if they take too long to solve the problem, something happens (the walls closes, the bomb explodes, etc)?
Thank you so much! And yes, just something to make them realize their time is limited. It doesn’t have to be life threatening, but a little pressure can make an encounter much more exciting!
Great stuff as always. Sorry to hear about your job...it's a tough, scary time for sure. With these tips applying primarily to in person games, I was wondering if you would consider doing a video on tips to keep your online sessions engaging? I DM a campaign as well as play in another campaign, both online. As a player, I sometimes find myself zoning out as it's hard to really get a feel at times for what is going on, so I simply just tag along until I can focus back in. We have a great DM so no complaints there, but online play definitely presents its own challenges. Thanks for all the great videos!
Thank you! That would make a great video to follow this one up in the future. I know playing online has become much more common recently, and as the Patreon campaign gets underway, I’ll certainly have more to say on the topic! :)
Thank you! I’m having a lot of fun with it, and I think tomorrow’s video will really show how I’ve already been able to improve my editing in this time 👍🏻
I am sorry to hear you got laid off. I was laid off as well because of Covid. But I ended up landing the job of my dreams working at home as a front end web developer. Sometimes when something bad happens it is really the world just giving you that push you needed to do something better
Thank you. That’s awesome to hear about your new job! I’m actually just starting to get back to work too. It’s a totally new program so we’ll have to see what happens next, but it’s been great to spend more time on the channel :)
Great idea to make the best out of the "unpaid leave" you are going through. Do you plan to put the D&D sessions online? (as long as everyone is fine with it)
Yeah for this module, I'm thinking I'll just be highlighting some parts of my sessions in the DM guides. I do plan on recording sessions for LMoP when I get around to it, but Frostmaiden is just too big of a book!
@@BobWorldBuilder yes actually. Before you start ask you players what the expected from there Dm. That way both sides know what kind of game the will be playing.
I see! Yes, I tried to cover that with #2 "setting expectations" but it certainly needs its own video -- probably a session 0 video -- to really get into the details. The nature of a list video like this is unfortunately that it only scratches the surface of each topic. So thank you for the suggestion! I had a session 0 video already on my list, but it's moving up in the schedule ranking!
I jokingly mentioned Bardy McFly was at a local tavern performing because my fellow PCs didn't know what they wanted to do, and everyone, DM included just ran with it and we are all going to see Bardy McFly perform.
Ive been noticed! lol great advice, keep the great vids coming. And my last game we played they didnt set a single thing on fire, i was shocked! But they did set an owlbear free in the Cragmaw Castle to be a distraction and cause havic, then with using all the wizards 2nd. lvl. slots to keep up the suggestion spell and 3 animal handling with results over 20...my group now has a wild owlbear there wanting to tame. So now my group consists of a wizard with an imp familiar, a fighter/rogue with a wolf companion, the goblin Droop they saved an made friends with, and now this beast of an owlbear. Not sure if there just wanting it for a meat shield/tank or if they learned all the consequences there murder hobo action had(cause there was a few...) and maybe there trying to be "nicer". Ill find out when i kill it and see if they actually try an save/resurrect it .
Geez! Hey maybe this is a good time to use tip #3 -- just ask them what they want out of the owlbear and friends! Maybe they don't know yet, and that will get them to think long term! :) And thank you for suggesting this topic. It really turned into a great video :D
@@BobWorldBuilder Had the talk, the imp an wolf are staple an have backstory, the goblin is a coward who always hides from combat so that's solved(plus he can jump into the bag of holding if theres nowhere to hide) and they really want the owlbear as a permanant companion. Itll end up workin out cause the fighter/rogue's backstory of finding out why his eyes glow orange(he told me they glow but he doesn't know why, but i do! Its a magic bloodline trait that can happen in his family. A magical connection to beasts like the old school Beast Master movies and t.v. shows lol).
@@vengeful_lowky653 That's fantastic! Good on the player for leaving something totally open-ended like that for you to be creative with -- and it totally paid off! Well done :)
@@BobWorldBuilder now its time to roll some dice to see if the owlbear caused any problems during the night since they left it in the stables with all those tasty horses an goats mmm lol. And then when they get to Wave Echo Cave the very first thing is a 20 foot drop to venture inside, it'll be interesting to see how they get a wolf and a wild/newly tamed owlbear down there😂.

You know about as much as I do! I'm hoping it happens, and I know there will be pretty drastic health and safety changes if it does
I may be super late, but are there any openings left in the online campaign?
I don't know if you've already been told but I think you're the Bob Ross of D&D. Kind, calm and with awesome advices
I have been told this and I always like hearing it xD Thank you!
This !!!
Was literally just thinking the same thing!
Love it! That's a great comparison.
That is the most accurate description! Completely agree
"If you're still watching, it worked."
Okay, ya got me.
😎👉👉
I wish I had teachers like you when I was in school. I would have done soooooo much better. Thank you for helping to build a better tomorrow sir..
That is very kind! Thank you :)
I started to DMing recently and I am D.M. a campaign fully based on character's background. I had luck my players wrote backgrounds with hooks I could use and they are loving it.
Every section I ask them publicly and privately what they liked, loved, disliked and what they think cold be better and it is being very helpful.
Then you are doing GREAT! You're going to have an awesome and memorable campaign if you keep that up :)
"Never check the rules" is beautiful and I'm never going to stop using it.
Haha, admittedly that’s one I don’t always do because it’s pretty quick to share spell details with online d&d, but I still highly recommend it! :)
Your experience as an educator really shows in your speech patterns structure and pacing, loving the videos keep it up :D
Thanks a ton!
That Michael Bay gag was amazing
This guy's really got a way. Mellow, confidential approach, soft show of expertise, laid back eloquence. No wonder he's getting popular!
Another tip to elaborate on tip 7
Use eatable enemies for combat encounters. It is super satisfying getting to eat your adversary after a lengthy combat session. Great tips. Definitely be using these in my future DMin endeavors

This is so amazing! I hope you make a podcast out of the dnd group !!
I'll be recording more 1-on-1 games with Grace in the future!
Thanks for the tips, look forward to using them in my strahd campaign
Awesome! You should check out the channel Lunch Break Heroes for a ton of guides on CoS!
Yes yes, I hope you can make it full time, love your content.
Cool tips... I already do most of them, but the timer one could realy be fun.
Awesome! Thanks for commenting :)
I love your videos man! Just found your channel yesterday and it’s electric
Welcome aboard! Thank you for subscribing :D
Very good video, well shot and you are indeed good at talking to kids 😁😉 Good luck for the channel and these months!
Thank you for the support and taking the time to comment :)
Nice! Totally using these in my online sessions!
Sweet! Glad you found these tips useful :)
Totally. Love all your content! I actually found your channel poking around for helpful videos on the Icespire peak campaign. I saw that there was a full playlist on all of the material that I needed the most! Five seconds later, I was a supporter, fan and subscriber. I send you and Grace my regards, and keep up the good work! Lovin’ it!
That means a lot! And thank you for commenting and subscribing. I really appreciate the support! :)
Best of luck going full-time! I will be sure to watch your vids to help out. :)
I appreciate your dedication! And thank you for taking the time to comment :)
Another great video! I didn’t quite get what happened with the jenga
Thank you! I got a few requests to make a separate video about the jenga idea, so I will probably go deeper into that topic later this summer :)
Great video! Or at least the first 8 seconds were great, I couldn't finish it.
Thank you!
You got it my friend!
I love your videos, your definitely in my top 3 favorite D&D UA-camrs
Your channel is awesome! I started DMing DoIP and your tips are great! Everyday I watch at least one video :)
One question: your tip of using a timer is for making a scene with urgent decisions?
Bob what is your favorite character class/race combination to play? I would guess a gnome caster of some sort.
I’m commenting to help you cause you helped me thank you so much for helping me engage my players
Thanks very much!
Since you make good content, and seem like a stand-up ish guy, here’s my comment. Good luck
You have made realy good conents! I remember following avidly your tips about IceSpirePeak!
Thank you! I appreciate your support:)
I’ve loved your content, happy to contribute via your Patreon. Just signed up. Good luck out there! Thank you, Bob!
Just saw this comment! So glad to have you, Nice :)
After watching the video all the way to the end, all I can remember is bardy mcfly
Long live Bardy! He's the only thing you really need to keep your player's attention!
Thanks for the solid content and inspiration. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the great tips, Bob!
Bob, that timer scared the shit out of me. I'm still panicking.
My bad! Deep breaths, Matt. Deep breaths 👍
Good luck to you! the videos are fantastic! I think you could do greate as a full time UA-camr.
Thank you! I’m having a lot of fun with it, and I think tomorrow’s video will really show how I’ve already been able to improve my editing in this time 👍🏻
Love all your vids man!
Thank you very much! :)
7:24 instructions unclear. Now I have seven fiancees, demanding an explanation...
Now you have plenty of people to play D&D with!
Hell yeah
Subscribed. Good luck Bob!
Thank you for subscribing! :)
Thank you Mr. Builder💜
nice tips, I could even use them... but I DM online so yeah... Kinda hard to do it
Great idea to make the best out of the "unpaid leave" you are going through.
Do you plan to put the D&D sessions online? (as long as everyone is fine with it)
I haven’t recorded any of them, but at some point I may release a campaign diary or something. I’m very proud of the world we’ve built as a group! :)
@@BobWorldBuilder That is why I am asking. I find it fascinating to see a group shape a world together. Looking forward to any follow ups :)
Yeah for this module, I'm thinking I'll just be highlighting some parts of my sessions in the DM guides. I do plan on recording sessions for LMoP when I get around to it, but Frostmaiden is just too big of a book!
You got this Bob!
The encourage really helps! Thank you :)
Great tips!
Thank you! Is there anything you would have added to this list?
@@BobWorldBuilder yes actually. Before you start ask you players what the expected from there Dm. That way both sides know what kind of game the will be playing.
I see! Yes, I tried to cover that with #2 "setting expectations" but it certainly needs its own video -- probably a session 0 video -- to really get into the details. The nature of a list video like this is unfortunately that it only scratches the surface of each topic. So thank you for the suggestion! I had a session 0 video already on my list, but it's moving up in the schedule ranking!
@@BobWorldBuilder I re-watch the clip. What I mean is more like combat or role-playing heavy.
Ahh, thank you for the clarification. I totally agree that should be discussed very early on, or better yet, before the campaign begins!
And thank you for suggesting this topic.
Literally engage my players...? Should I break it off before the wedding, or do we need to go all the way?
Great advice, keep it up.
Thank you! Will do :)
Watched alot of your videos. Sorry i didn't leave a comment. I will from now on. Even if it is a simple"hey how ya doin ". And keep building Bob!
Awesome video again Bob! Sucks about your job, but you will do amazing work in the next few months on youtube! Keep it up :)
All about those silver linings! I appreciate your positivity, thank you :)
Nice work! Thanks for the video
Great work! More weapons options please :-)
Awesome video!! :D
Glad you liked it! :)
First time watching. Good intro, you earned a sub
Woo! Thank you! I hope you enjoy my other videos, and please let me know what topics you would like to hear about :)
