The fate of a Confederate flag

- Several years ago, in Summerville, South Carolina, Annie Caddell stirred heated emotions from across her predominantly black neighborhood when she raised a Confederate flag outside her home. Protests led to counter-protests, which made international news. But now Caddell has done an about-face, and taken down the flag, helping move her divided community a little closer together. She explained to Stave Hartman why she believes her new position is the more honorable one.

I believe the confederate flag is representing the south and not racism.
Just another sell out. To bad she didn't offer history classes on what our country (CSA) actually stood for.
Our country? The CSA? Excuse me, sir, but YOUR country (CSA) collapsed in May of 1865 when Jefferson Davis and his cabinet were captured in Georgia! Please stop fighting the Civil War! The South gave up 150 years ago!
Fun documented fact: A Confederate General stated: I don't know any other reason for this war other than to maintain the preservation of African Slavery. Yet, the civil war and confederate flag aren't about slavery? Hmm........Heritage!! Merica!! People that use these excuses are ashamed of their ancestors behavior and use any means of misdirection as possible.
I fly the Confederate flag in South Carolina, and I will be buried with it draped over my coffin. God loves proud Southerners!
Yes he does, dont ever regret that.
one day when that vessel u call ur body, the coffin n that cloth would have gone back to dust, ur spirit will remember the JD comment above..i hope for u that wont b the case
I'm disturbed that your username icon contains a swastika. Is this your definition of 'proud southerners '?

Come and take it.
I'm a confederate
I'm a Texan. So, yes, I'm a Confederate as well!
Now that's a big step
Lol change of heart? It's not even racist
Come over to my house and I will explain why it is LOL!

so we shouldn't support Hick Hop music videos like Friends of All Kinds ( Moccasin Creek), Bloodshed ( Upchurch) and Racism ( Adam Calhoun) because they all have Confederate flags in those video even the songs all have anti-racist and calls for unity messages?

@Reggie Howze Hear, hear!
There is nothing wrong with the Confederate flag but she obviously had bad intentions by putting it up.
Don't be stupid here, or is that just your every day mode of thinking? It was not about slavery. It was for state's rights! That was the point of the whole thing!
Within Hear Shot? Our store sure has not got one and she has been in several times since God healed her. PRAYERS WENT UP FOR THIS WOMAN LONG BEFORE HER FLAG DID.

LONG LIVE DIXIE
That woman know what she was doing when she put that flag up anyway
Great story.
Couldn't agree with you more...it IS a great story. That flag stopped being about "culture" when Southerners and the ku klux clan started waiving it as a disgusting symbol of segregation, slavery, and hate. Anybody who takes pride in that flag supports pure evil. Ms. Caddell's eyes are proof enough that she has a new heart in more ways than one.
Not gonna get into any debate with you, and it's not in my DNA to hate anyone. My comment was directed to the person who said that this was a great story, and I agreed that it was. The only fact worth noting here is that the Confederacy fought for slavery and segregation, and that flag was a symbol of the war they waged. That flag symbolizes a time that no true American should ever want to celebrate. But if you do, then that's your business.
This is the year 2018, and I'm focused on what is right now. And I really don't need any tainted history lesson to know right from wrong. That flag lost whatever positive identity it had when it was being used as America's own swastika. What YOU need to realize is how much pain and misery that flag represents. The sooner you can do that, the better off our country today would be for it.
Like I said at the beginning, I don't want to debate you. I am obviously not going to say anything to change your opinion of this, and you've said nothing here that will ever change mine. But we certainly can agree that the American flag still flies with lots of blood, hypocrisy, and mistrust. After almost 242 years as a nation, it's still more divided than ever before, and with the climate of today, it's only getting worse. No flag or symbol by itself is responsible for freedom, slavery, love, or hate....it's defined by the character of the people who use it to communicate their message. I would hope can appreciate the disgust for a swastika as I do, and what it stands for. Maybe you can't...but if you can, then you will understand what the sight of a Confederate flag also represents to so many in this country who see it as hateful and an insult. So we can either finally learn from our history or be doomed to keep repeating it. Sadly, this country hasn't learned much from its tragedies, and I don't have any faith that the United States will ever live up to name. But it starts with mutual understanding and respect for each other. With great sincerity, I appreciate this conversation. Have a great one, Movie Wolf!
Bentom86 Thank you for your trolling contribution.
It is also a good tribute to tolerance and openness on both sides. When she approached the director of the Community Outreach- he accepted here request to talk with him, and got an unexpected surprise.
Too many younger folks decide once slighted, there is no further conversation, and have their own shallow prejudice. I find the 20 something's have absolutely no forgiveness or offering second chances to people.
What, exactly, if you can prove it, explain it to me?
I love the confederate flag, don’t care what people say
We the people have the right to fly the confederate flag, people need to understand history
Right. That's why they had all of the statues up! That's why it was on the Georgia and Mississippi flags! That's why Robert E. Lee had his own square in New Orleans! That's why Stone Mountian was built. Sorry if I spelled it wrong, but You can correct it.

Ok, heres the thing, I know many people have mixed feelings on the flag, but she was clearly forced to take it down, her neighbors can't seem to mind their own business
Our Flag is sacred to our folks who fought for the South . They wanted independence . And why not?!!
This flag is our Battle Flag . Long may it fly.
@Max Bowen Please, don't be silly. The North was strangling us economically is one reason we wanted Independence .
As for slavery - Not all Southerners had slaves . I think (I may be wrong) that it was 5 or10% . Plus we had black soldiers fighting for us - and damned good soldiers they were too!
You know ,the North had more slaves than the South at one time .Nothing,or very little is mentioned about this.
Slavery is disgusting, abhorrent .
General Lee was going to abolish this cruel and nasty trade after the War.
I would just like to finish with this : I have many black friends ,and on occasions we talk about the War . Just good buddies having a beer and a discussion.
Anyway Max. We had the better soldiers. You had all the heavy industries and countless reserves.
DEO VINDICE.
@Max Bowen Max , we are on opposite sides of the fence ,but we both agree that slavery was and still is in some cases , absolutely disgusting.
Max.You are a good guy. I wish you all the best my friend.
@Max Bowen Facts are facts Max, period . And... history is history . No getting away with it. Iam more than happy to stay and support the gray side of the fence.
A good growing moment.

That lady should never made problems for herself pls putting up the confederate flag that’s just very disrespectful and very racist and that’s what she should of never done
If I were her I would put up a big bronze statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest on his war horse on my property and also put up a Confederate cannon in front to defend that property
The issue isn't her, her neighbors said she was nice. It's the fault of her neighbors for having and understandable, but yet unjustified prejudice of the Confederate flag. I mean it's been some time since segregation ended...
Segregation never ended it may not be Jim crow but it's a lot worser now
Love my Southern life and Pride!!!
As you should. Embrace the American Flag and the South Carolina flag...
U should but I love my southern life to but heritage to me is ppl having fun eating good food
My mom's friend has a Confederate flag on her back porch at Lake Oconee in Georgia . Don't know what to do .
Mind your own business. Free speech is more important than your subjective predjudice.
I'm glad she does, and it's not your place to do anything, because it's not your property.
You don't have to do anything. It's not your fault your mom's friend is like that.
Tom Nolan, dont do anything, its your mothers friend's right, and freedom of speech
Leave her TF alone, its her freedom.
I would fly that flag till the end. False grade school teaching is reason for negativity against that flag
She did the right thing. Remember, be kind to your neighbors. They know where you live.
She was forced, her neighbors literally did not mind their own business, and scared her
Maybe her neighbors should have been kind to her and ask why the flag was important to her!
@@Trucking4Freedom Southern heritage is a lie Im from the south to but not the south you want tho
@@FalconsFanForever Yea I don’t know what part your from either so don’t judge me because you know not what your implying!
Be kind to the neighbors? OK. Right. It takes 2 to tango, people! She's not going to step on that stupid dance floor! She's got too much pride for the Southern cause (And, people, it wasn't slavery). That just came with the times. OK. You want to talk about slavery? Read Exodus. Then, you'll get the idea of slavery. In the 1770's we had slavery in Virginia! Remember? We had slavery in 1820, 1820, 1830, 50, The year it ended was in 1863! So, don't tell me it's racist! It's not.
Now the heritage and the history is racism.
¿What is going on ?
This "history" of that flag IS racism. You can read about it in the secession papers for South Carolina (the very first Rebel state to do so). It isn't "heritage" unless you claim it to be so.

Open your eyes and your heart Cotton Hill. You know it's America now. The Rebellion is gone forever now.. Move on.
@@NiceHandTick yes I know it's America, and I love our country and fear our government. That war was fought over states rights and we all lost the right in that war for the states to have rule over the federal government the right that was given us in the Constitution and that was the first right we lost and now they are trying their best to take away more rights like the 1st and 2nd amendment. If people don't stand up and fight like those brave Confederate soldiers when will it end ? With us living in a communist country ?
Dishonor? That's a joke. OK. Who is your "idol"? King? Christ? Davy Crockett? FDR? Who? How would you feel if those statues were torn down? You'd hate right?
