    You know full well that there were people that bought both sets of Ghostbusters figures and did their own crossovers. I would've if I could have found these in my area.

    In the 70s Filmation produced a live-action kids show called Ghost Busters. In 1984 that was discovered during the production of the movie. Rights to the name were secured from Filmation, but Filmation kept the rights to use the name as well. I've read a quote from the guy who was then running Filmation who said that what they should have asked for was the right to produce the animated spinoffs of the movie; instead, they decided to produce their own spinoff of the previous live-action show.

    Yeah, he became quite a major character in the later, more "cartoony" Real Ghostbusters (when it was renamed "Slimer and The Real Ghostbusters").
    He was effectivly the fifth Ghostbuster in them.

    LOL love that story. As a true Real Ghosbuster fan as a kid didn't care much for this show either and probably would have made fun of you as well but I did used to watch this show once in a while and I just downloaded the whole season and I plan to get really baked and watch it.

    "The show is also known as The Original Ghost Busters because when Columbia Pictures released the film Ghostbusters in 1984 it neglected the fact that Filmation had already produced a live-action comedy series with that same name in 1975. Filmation sued Columbia in 1985, (...)"

    Actually this cartoon was based on a live Saturday morning show from 1975-1976. That's part of the reason why the cartoon based on the movie w/ Bill Murray and co. was called "the REAL Ghostbusters". Even though it came later.

    @uselessman73 Yeah, in the mid 70s there was a live-action TV show called "The Ghost Busters". It was the first property w/ the name. The Filmation Ghostbusters cartoon was based on it. The 80's movie and The Real Ghostbusters were all Dan Aykroyd's idea. (although Ramis, and maybe others, helped w/ the screenplay)

  • @WishItWas1984
    @WishItWas1984  13 років тому +3

    @Doop3r Right, at the time I didn't realize Dan Aykroyd had no idea about the original TV show. In old interviews he does mention old comedies w/ ghosts as inspiration, but never points to the original TV show. Odd to me, but it is what it is.
    As for your last point, the live action original does have a lot to do with the Filmation follow-up. The Filmation cartoon is directly based off of that TV show. The characters are the sons of the live-action duo.

  • @ScrewAttackEurope
    @ScrewAttackEurope 16 років тому

    Yeah, I just read that on Wikipedia, I suprised they didn't have him as a more reacurring chatacter though.
    I don't recall the Mayor ever making an appearence either, despite him being a pretty large character in both movies.

    One of the few Filmation shows I never saw when it first aired. I kind of dug character design on this and some other Filmation shows in early 70s such as Groovy Ghoulies, My Favorite Martian and few others. Interesting to see different look and feel of Filmation cartoons during course of their 25 year run.

  • @witchboard

    Yes, thats why they had to change the name to "The REAL Ghostbusters" because Filmation still had the animation rights.

    why argue of who ripped off who and who's better when these toys are all the perfect scale for an epic cross over? :D

  • @trapadoored
    @trapadoored 14 років тому

    @dukeofcrydee
    akroyd didn't rip off the original show on purpose-he was trying to do a high tech version of old movies like "the ghost breakers" which had I think Bob Hope in it-he probably wasn't aware of the 70's show untill after he wrote the screenplay. still filmation let them use the name but then made this cartoon to cash in on the popluarity of the movies. too bad because if people weren't always comparing the two this would have been remembered as a very cool show.

  • @hectorsalinasisback
    @hectorsalinasisback 11 років тому +1

    Yeah, the figures were pretty basic, but they had a unique style which stayed true to the cartoon. I find that the style of these figures resembles toys from the 1950s and 1960s. Notice Tracy the gorilla's body and arms.

  • @innercitybigdog
    @innercitybigdog 16 років тому

    They could have, but they used that name essentially out of spite. As for Filmation, who knows...I doubt they had any grand ideas about the fate of their franchise. They were just trying to capitalize on the fact that legally they were able to produce something with the same name as a hugely popular movie of the time. Yeah, Filmation made the first anything with the name "Ghostbusters," but it wasn't until the movie that anyone cared.

  • @innercitybigdog
    @innercitybigdog 16 років тому

    Actually, no. Columbia had secured all the rights, they just did that as a snub to Filmation.

  • @JosephDillman

    I didn't say this cartoon came out in the '70s, just the show it was based on. Indeed this cartoon originated in the '80s. Filmation sued Columbia in 1985, and as part of the settlement the cartoon based on the 1984 movie could not simply be called Ghostbusters. So that show became The Real Ghostbusters to directly distinguish it from the Filmation show.

    Prime Evil has a REAL cape? I thought it was fake!
    All I have is an Eddie figure with no accessories :(
    But I DO have an animation cell!

  • @Doop3r
    @Doop3r 13 років тому

    @dukeofcrydee Actually, Dan Aykroyd wrote the script with no knowledge of there being any previous thing called Ghostbusters. Columbia WAS aware though. But Aykroyd, the guy who came up with the concept? No clue. So the Ghostbusters everyone is familiar with with Peter, Egon, Winston and Ray, really has no ties to the Filmation GBs aside from the name. In fact, the live action original Ghostbusters show has very little to do with the Filmation follow-up.

    Was the Filmation version released before the first movie?
    I'd have thought they'd still be riding high on their He-Man franchise at the time.
    One thing they had that the REAL Ghostbusters never had though was an arch villian, TRG had a different enemy each episode. I'm suprised they didn't bring in Walter Peck or s aimilar character who kept trying to shut them down Etc. Thats the usual route for a reacurring enemy.

  • @WishItWas1984
    @WishItWas1984  17 років тому

    Sorry, but you have it backwards. The Real Ghostbusters (and the movies) are an excellent imitation of Ghost Busters, the original live action show...from the 60's/70's I think?.
    The Filmation Ghostbusters cartoon, the one these toys are from, is a more faithful adaption of the original.

    @ForthReich Actually The Real Ghostbusters isn't even Dan Akroy'ds, Ivan Reitmans, or any of there oriinal ideas. They all based it off the 70s show. If you watch it and this cartoon.. you can see the similarities.
    1. The name alone, Ghostbusters
    2. The Backbacks
    3. The Ghost dematerializer
    The Real Ghostbusters was totally lifted from the 70s Ghostbusters , there was nothing original about Akroyd's. Yeah it was good and funnier with updated humor, but certainly not original.
